Ilayaraaja in Malaysia!

Here is the excerpt from this afternoon's "Malay Mail"

Famous Indian composer Ilaiyaraja, who has composed 3,500 songs for 700 films, is launching his book Vazhi Thunai tommorow at Auditorium DBKL at 7.30 pm.
Works minister and MIC President Datuk Seri Dr. S. Samy Vellu is guest of honour.
The event is organised by Swaralayya Enterprise which promotes fine arts and literary works.
Ilaiyaraja learnt Carnatic and Western music and obtained his grade 8 in Trinity College of Music in London where he passed with flying colours and walked away with the gold medal.
Hailed as a maestro for his performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he has also been awarded a string of other titles.
He's a three-time recipient of India's National Award for Music in 1984, 1986 and 1988.
In 1994, Ilaiyaraja was confered honourary citizenship of Teanech Township by the Teanech in New Jersey, John Abraham.

  I was thinking along similar lines as you. I thought that if I had the opportunity to meet him, I would pass him a note explaining the forum and the many devotees he has worldwide. Of course if I had the opportunity I will also ask him about the symphony. :-))
  
  But now I have a better idea.

  2. Based on that, Sathiya Keerthi can then compose a letter for him, and e-mail it to me.
  
  3. I will then pass the letter to him.

  Looking at the invitation card, I think that the book, Vazhi Thunai will be on motivation, rather than anything else. The card is pretty impressive and shows the face of a contemplating Ilayaraaja against a silhouetted background of the sky and moon in pastel colours. Handwritten on the cover is:

Now I can listen only to his voice in the interview. Is it today(27/5) at 10.30 PM in Malaysian Tamil Radio? Can anybody confirm this and also give the frequency of the radio channel? I usually tune only to SIN 96.8.

  Sathiya 2 weeks back IR visited Singapore. Did you know about it? I was told that he visited Komala's fine dining for lunch. May be once IR releases his Symphony, we(singai vasigal) should try to talk to big shots here to organise a Parattu Vizha like the one for Shivaji Ganesan.
  
  For those who miss the IR's programme live, we will hope for some clips to be screened in Malaysia TV programme Nadasuara this saturday afternoon(or next week).

  Sathiya Keerthi - On behalf of the fans of Ilayaraja in this forum, let me express my appreciation for the well-written letter to Ilayaraaja. I had no problems printing it, and all that needs to be done is to hand it over to the maestro. :-))
  Let's hope that he or his rep. responds in some manner.

  mfm - Last night at 10.30 pm, it was Isai Arangam and not Isai Gniani, so the interview must be tonight. I don't know what time the book launching programme will finish, but I'll try my best to get some anecdotes. I don't know the frequency from Singapore, but you can get Malaysian Radio through the internet here:

  Guys - I'm sure there are many of you who are anxious to know about the function.
  
  Firstly, YES, Ilayaraaja was here and did attend the function. :-))
  
  I was about 10 yards from him for three solid hours! And boy, was I overwhelmed. :-))
  Don't get me wrong. I am not your typical star-struck teenager. In fact I maintain e-mail correspondence with two major Tamil movie stars, on first name basis. (I am saying this to impress upon you that celebreties are no big deal for me.)
  
  But Ilayaraaja is different altogether. I grew up on his music and I can liken it to thaai-paal for me. The hours, days, weeks, months and years that I obtained pleasure from his music is indescribable. Yeththanai vaatham, yeththanai poorippu! Pazhaya nenaipputhaan makkaley, pazhaya neneipputhaan. :-))
  
  pinkurippu: That does not mean that I cannot criticise his present-day songs or I shouldn't enjoy other MD's music. :-))
  
  That he was there in person, his humility, his aanmeega-ness, was enough to drive me into a frenzy.
  
  Top politicians, kavignars from both India and Malaysia and a rep. from US, heaped praises upon him. Many of these were similar to what we have seen on this forum, that I couldn't help thinking they were inspired from some of the discussions.
  
  Friends, I'd like to share with you my feelings and my experience. Please bear with me. I'll try to let you know everything before the day is over.
  
  In the meantime, the suspense continues.... Did I manage to give the letter to Ilayaraaja, personally? What was his comments - if any - on the symphony? Who were the other celebrities attending the function?
  
  FYI, I learnt that the interview on radio was cancelled, due to some unfortunate circumstances - this came from Ilayaraja himself.
