I am big fan of SPB too. But it is rather surprising people discussing about singers without mentioning about KJY. IMHO he has a god given voice which you will enjoy if you listen to some of his malayalam songs. He is the one who can excel in wide range of singing with equal felicity. Carnatic, Gazal, Fastbeat, Western, Melody.. etc. It is just my opinion.

Outsider;
he he, let me help u, higher octaves mean higher pitch, while lower octaves mean lower pitch, yes I agree with u about Kishore Kumar & his bassy voice, but don't 4get SPB, Bala Murali Krishna also have heavy bass based voice, but SPB can make his voice as tender/rough as he wants through his amazing modulation techniques, don't u agree?
thanks

SPB has a very sweet voice. I mean even when he talks he sounds sweet. Something one cannot say about Janaki and some other singers.

That's why, he has dubbed his voice for Kamal, Surilarajan, Mohan (only a few time, while most of the time, it was S.N.Surender who dubbed his voice for mohan), "Theengai Srinivasan", and quit of lot of Telugu /Karnatika actors.

The most memorable performance from SPB is when he lent his voice to Kitty in the movie 'Sathya'.
His voice was subtle and cold hearted. That made the performance of Kitty stood out. His performance as an actor in Keladi Kanmani and Sigaram touched my heart. Also in his debut movie Manathil Urudhi vendum he did a wonderful job

Uthaman;
Have u heard a song by SPB, from the movie "Anjali", (*ring Raghuvaran/Revathy/Prabhu)?
the song is very difficult to render in such heavy voice, if u have not heard it, hear it, then comment upon it.
thanks

YUCK !!!
How can any one make such a idotically categorical statement like "SPB the greatest singer that India had ever produced". How many singers have you heard from the thousands India has produced ?
And even if you restrict to just film music, how can you even bear to comapare this chappie with the likes of PBS or KJY ? or moving to the North - singers of the calibre of Rafi, Talat, Saigal, Mukesh, Manna Dey etc.(not even considering Lata here) Abs blasphemous.
SPB is a fine singer - but thats just what - and all that - he is. Dont know what are the parameters you have taken - but just see that you word the statements better.

Sathya;
I bet u, i have heard more songs than u have heard in your entire life, u must be really thick or have no sense in music @all,SPB is the Most versatile singer ever, yes KJY is fine carnatic artists, & PBS is fine melodius singer that's about it, but SPB can any sort out of songs, I do not have time list such songs to u, even If I do, it will never sink into your head, as you r a very narrow minded person,
if u want to challenge me, then do so, with proofs as y SPB is the greatest or not the greatest, & I will prove it 2 u SPB is the greatest, with due respect to other singer.

I am still awaiting the parameters measured on which you say that he is the BEST (Gaaawwd) ever.
First PLEASE CLARIFY - by SINGER, I hope u r restricting urself to FILM singers. Or are you claiming that SPB is superior to the likes of Balamurali, Bhimsen Joshi et al.

Sathya;
we are indeed talking about FILM MUSIC, means Play back singing, Not carnatic, not ghazal, not qwalis, not bhajan, not rap, Not reggae.
Yes I agree BMK is an excellent Carntic, infact he is one of my other favourite like KJY, PBS, AMR, Ghantasala, ..etc.
but in play back singing, no body, I mean NO BODY can excel SPB!, BMK once said "Balu can sing any of my songs, but I wish I can do the same, but I can not,", that's the beauty of SPB, besides his singing talents, just listen to this guys's amazing baritone voice & how he modulates his voice to suit actor, here are some eg;
1) for Sivaji sir - SPB sings in a very deep voice
2) for super* - SPB sings in a deep voice & in style to suit Rajni
3) Mohan- SPB sings is soft voice to suit mohan's soft voice!
can KJY, TMS, PBS, BMK, do that ????
no way man!

Hey raghu,
How can you miss, how nicely SPB matched Kamal in all his songs? In songs like "Nadiganin kadali nadaham enadi" and "vanithavani" the transition from Kamal's voice to SPB's voice is superb.
Last but not the least SPB was terrific for MGR in "Paadum bodhu Naan thenral katru"
Why I like SPB is he brings out the best even in otherwise so-so songs. I like many songs just because the way he has sung. The other day I was listening to "Degam Pattu" song in Sattam. It was a ordianary dance competition song. But the way he has sung matched very well with the situation.

totally agreed
>>I like many songs just because the way he has sung<<
very very true, even an ordinary silly tune can be made to listen to through SPB's style & voice!

Mohan's soft voice??? Did he have voice? I thought he was a dumb rode his luck with Surendar's voice!! I think even at home Surdendar is lending his voice!!!

Yes , S.N.Surender did lend his voice to Mohan in most of the films, but S.N.surender's voice is soft any way.

Thank you for the clarification. A statement like " 'SPB the greatest singer that India had ever produced" hardly conveys that though.
Anyway, even in the realms of film playback singing, I would like to know how you decide him to be the best. Just because he sang for all those actors doesnt make him great.
PBS sang for Sivaji, for Gemini, for Balaji, for Muthuraman etc - so does it make him the greatest playback singer ? How absoultely ridiculous.
And talking of voice modulation, he can come nowhere near the likes of Mohd Rafi. And in terms of sheer melody, he cant ever imagine to be amongst the likes of Talat or even PBS.
As to what BMK said, well similar praises have been earned by so many other from the Clasical legends. Why, Pandit Jasraj once said that he considers himself a mere toddler in front of Lata. I dont think its worth getting into arguments on that score.
For most part in your response, you have just kept parroting that he was the best without substantiating on WHY you say so. I am most willing to agree with you if you could just provide some solid reasons for your statement rather than just repeating that he is the best.

raghu:
As per u BMK says: "SPB can sing all my songs but I cannot sing those by SPB". Where have u heard BMK make this statement? Could you give us a link to the article/interview?
Secondly, let us assume BMK really said this. Do you honestly think this is enough to make u reach the conclusion that SPB is the greatest? If yes, then why are you unwilling to believe SPB when he says that Mohammed Rafi is his idol, and he can never scale the heights scaled by Mohammed Rafi? :-)
