bb,
Many years later, (I think in 1991 ), there was a Hindi film 'KhOj' with Rishi, Kimi Katkar and Naseeruddin Sha (as the CID), which had shamelessly lifted from the immortal 'Pudhiya PaRavai' (at least upto the interval!). Singapore of 'PP' was replaced by Nepal here, with extensive shooting there! Of course, it was no patch on 'PP'!

Shivaji kills Sowkar (his wife) & Sarojadevi Comes to investigate..
Particularly for BS PS sings in a different Style

CV, wasn't pudhiya paravai itself based on a Jimmy Stewart movie?

Rishi Kapoor played Saroja Devi or Sowcar s role?
PP,the real heroes/heroines were MSV-TKR/KD/TMS/PS/Sivaji/cameraman/Sowcar in that order.There was a distinct "Englishness" in the style.Dada Mirasi (who incidentally was role model for Nagesh in Kadhalikka Neramillai) did a decent job on a very thin story line.A superb song,and i always wondered as a child as to why flowers are being shown when SG comes close to Saroja devi and does a "Yummy!" in the next shot.

I am singing the song to find the ragam.
At least the pallavi seems to me like Madhyamavathi based or a derivative there of. 'Kaatrukkenna veli kadalukkenna moodi',
'Agaya gangai' have a similar feel.
In the charanam however he goes to new places!
Not so simple to pinpoint without playing on a keyboard.
Madyamavathi gives a pure joy feeling, Sindhu Bhairavi is very heavy and sad (Nanoru sindhu kavadi chindu, unakkenna melae ninrai).

Excellent SOTD , an extended version of the song. PS and MSV-TKR's music outstanding. Was listening to aha mella nada mella nada a few days back - the string arrangements of the duo for most of the tracks from the movie are just great. Wonder if this got them any awards..

This is a great song, and yet it's not even my second favorite from Pudhiya Paravai. The PP soundtrack is colossal.
sridhar,
The first line is also evident in Rajen-Nagendra's "thodavaravoa thondharavoa" alias "nagunaguthaa" in Kannada.

Thanks for the comments on the ragam of chittukkuruvi. I fixed the starting of the song as sa and was trying to find the notes on the keyboard. The song seemed to be using the Sindhu Bhairavi notes. (The feel that comes out is something that I know very little about!) I am not sure if the starting of the song should be fixed at pa instead. If so, then the sacle used is Natabhairavi.. then, looking at the notes that are stressed, there could be that madhyamavathi feel you mentioned. The song seems to be using an alternating jump patterns at several places. In any case, do write more details on the scale of the song when you get some time.

Wonderful song!
When Sivaji passed away in 2001, Sun TV featured his films the whole week. And I was really vexed that they were shown in the afternoon, when I was at work. But they saved Pudhiya Paravai for Friday, and it was great watching it after a long time.
A very engrossing tale, with the unexpected ending, where all the people around Gopal(Sivaji), including his beloved Latha (BS) turn out to be from the Malaya Police. Sivaji's devastated reactions in the end are classic!
bb, Kannadasan used Vallinam in the starting syllable of the fourth line also-it is Kalandhida kandenae, and not moozhgida kandaene :)

Song of the Day: varalaamo sugam peralaamo from Aasai manaivi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/varalamo.rm
- Saravanan writes:
Sung by S Janaki. Music by Shankar-Ganesh.
Sooryalaya’s Aasai Manaivi-1977 starred Jaishankar with perhaps Jayachitra and Sujatha. I don’t know anything else about the film. I saw the song in Oliyum Oliyum as a child, and remember being enchanted by this song. And many years later, managed to record it from a Recording Center called ‘Electra84’ in Eldams Road, Chennai. (And when I went eagerly to get another set of songs recorded a couple of months later, there was a now pharmacy in its place—I wished they had a tablet for curing disappointment!)
The other songs in the film are the lively ‘Maapillai varaaru paaru, ivar maamiyaar veedu romba joru’ (TMS & Chorus) and the mellifluous ‘Azhagaana meni sruthi saerrkum neram’ (SPB)
* * * *
Shankar Raman and CS Ganesh were instrumentalists in MSV’s ensemble for a few years. Shankar was the younger brother of the genius CR Subburaman. S-G’s first film as MDs –‘Nagarathil Thirudargal’ was destined to sleep in the cans. Their first film to be released was Maharasi-1967.
‘Kavignar Vazhangiya Devarin’ S-G showed immense promise in their works in those early years- Akka Thangai, Kannan Varuvaan, Maanavan, Deivam Pesuma, Aval, Naan Yaen Pirandhen, Pugundha Veedu, Idhaya Veenai-- all have memorable songs. As the 70s unfolded, S-G began to be patronized more and more by low-budget producers who were not too fastidious. And S-G fell into a rut and took to unabashedly lifting tunes from other languages and started churning out mediocre songs by the dozen. Nonetheless, there were still some flashes of brilliance every now and then, reflecting the extent of their capacities.
* * * *
PS and later VJ were the singers S-G worked with more often. SJ was a rarely heard voice in their compositions. However in the stray occasions that they did work together, they came out with some stunners like ‘Idhu ilamaikaala iravu’ (Kaippidithaval), ‘Vaigai karaiyinil oru paravai’ (Natchathiram), ‘Pattu vanna rosaavaam’ (Kannipparuvathilae), ‘Vasanthamum neeyae’ (Kanneer Pookkal), ‘Naaum neeyum serndhu’ (Dhandikkappatta Nyayangal)---
Listen to how much value addition SJ brings to this song of languorous seductive appeal. Apparently the heroine sings this song to draw the attention of the hero to her physical longings, and being a demure and downcast heroine of 1977, she couldn’t afford to be so coarse as ‘Mennuda enna thinnudannuda’ types of today. Hark at the beautiful lyrics in which this physical urge is couched, and how fetchingly SJ portrays these emotions.

Shankar-Ganesh's Range is really a matter for research.the pallavi has been composed with western touches (RDB style too- Like "Shaan se").but the charanam's move to ghazal style is wonderful.How well the words "Etharkaga" "Kannan" have been sung by SJ.I wish to listen to SPB singing the charanams.Some places there is a mild resemblance to SG's "Devi vantha neram".But overall a superb song. SG s understandable confusion is also apparent-the pallavi rhythms, guitar arrangements to match the then in-thing IR, the charanams following typical MSV school of music....
The legendary "Sahib Biwi our Gulam"- and the not-so-legendary Meena Kumari s expressions of viraha Dhabam come to mind while listening.Dreadful to imagine JC trying to express viraha Dhabam -poor Jaishankar!
