Hope this shall prove a feast to IR fans. IR has invariably used the same raga for conveying different situations eg:
Raga Mohanam:
(1)Vandhadhey kungumam - love
(2)Nilavu thoongum neram - lullaby
(3)Ninnukori varnam - feet tapper
(4)Idhayam oru kovil - meloncholy
(5)Paruvamey - freshness of the dawn
There may be use of anya swaras. but that must not matter to a great extent. This thread may also discuss the works of other MDs. But the appreciation shall be better if different songs in the same raga of an MD is discussed. this may help us get a good look into the versatility of MD.

When we have heavy verwion of Ragam in "Kalaivaaniyey" we also have a lighter version in "Vandhaal Mahalakshmiyey'. The way the swaras are made by IR is amazing especially "PPPPPP DDDDDD NNNNNN SSSSSS". Compare this with "Kanneer Perugiyadhey", do you see differnce especially when SPB says "Aha oho" etc.. I think Raja has made a remarkable use of Kalyani. We may even compare these with Janani, janani - which is a devotional rendering.

Some of the best Kalyani songs include the following:
Mugathil mugam parkalam-Thanga padumai by V.R
Mannavan vandanadi-Tiruvarutchelvar by K.V.M
Thuninthapi n maname-Devadas by C.R.Subbaraman.

Any takers for Madhyamavathi?
Most of the songs set to this raga have been duets :
kuyilE kuyilE, pUnguile!
mayilE mayilE, vA mayilE (AN pAvam?)
sElai kattum peNNukkoru vAsam uNdu (kodi paRakkuthu)
muththukkALo kANgaL (nenjirukkum varai ?)
Ananthath thEn sindhum pUnjOlaiyil (??)
thodath thoda, nAn mella (??)
-----------------------------------
mottai has of course used the raga in other situations also :
thAlAttu, piLLai ennaith thAlAttu (achchANi) - portrays the bliss of a young family, I guess
thuLLi thuLLi nI pAdammA (sippikkuL muththu) - devotion?
IramAna rojAvE, ennaip pArththu mUdAthE (iLamaik kOlam) - a lover asking his lover for forgiveness
sOlaik kuyilE mAlaik kathirE (??) - a girl admiring the beauty of nature
sevvanthip pUkkaLil seytha vIdu (??) - a young couple dreaming of their future
kuyilE kuyilE kuyilakkA (en bommukkutti ammAvukku) - again a young family with a kid

I remember reading somewhere that muththukkaLO

Ramaswamy/Ragapriyan: MUTTHUKALO KANGAL is in Brindhavana Saranga, not Madhyamavathi, they are similar sounding, but not the same.

Geetha,
I tried playing muththukkaLO on my keyboard once, and there was no trace of both ni's, as required by Brindavana Saranga. Also the typical wavering around ri and ni made me conclude that it is in
Madhyamavathi. Did you find both ni2 and ni3 in the song?
Another song that could be added to the list of duets is 'AgAya gangai' in dharma yuddham. One remarkable aspect of IR's songs in madhyamavathi is that the songs never sound alike (except for similarities like kuyilE kuyilE)

Dear Ramaswamy,
I remember the tune only. If you can provide the lyrics for the song i may tell you where the second Ni comes one place I think is "thandhu vittaen ennai".

IR now a days is freaking out with the rAgA,
Hamsanadham. Few examples:
He started with "ThendRal vandhu ennai thodum", a melodic duet. I do not remember any IR song before that in this rAgA. Experts please correct me.
Recent times, he used it in Guru, for a scintillating, happy mood song which usually comes when the heroine just came to know about the Love or engaged for marraige. "nAn mAdathu"
Another melodic kinda duet, "kathul Kadal ullE oru mutheduthu vandhEn", i don't remember the film. Fundu melody, with exceptional interludes.
In the movie ThalaimuRai, he used it again for a tappAnguthu song. Only IR can do such gimmicks.

Let me start Sindhu bhairavi:
IR has done sufficient justice to this Ragam.
(1) Aattama therottama - Feet tapper
(2) Muthumani maalai - mellifluous duet
(3) Enna Saththam indha neram - "
(4) Nilavae mugam Kattu - Soga geetham
(5) Oru naalum unai marvdha - Duet
(6) Naanoru sindhu - sogam
MSV' contribution:
(1) Unakkena Meley nindrai - partly sogam
Deva:
(1) Aval Varuvalaa
(2) Attokkaaran
Add more to the list please if possible with a vivid description

It is interesting that Madhyamawati (s r2 m1 p n2)
and Hamsanadham (s r2 m2 p n3) are being discussed
around the same time here. Are these ragas close
in terms of the moods they create? I have always
thought of muththukkaLO kaNgaL and thendral
vandhu ennai thodum songs to be very very
close in terms of the moods they create. I don't
know if others have felt that. Since both songs
are from movies directed by Sridhar, it is even
possible that he requested IR to come up with a
tune similar to muththukkaLO kaNgaL and
IR chose a nearby raga to create the similar (but
still very different and equally wonderful) song,
thendral vandhu ennai thodum. Any comments?

Dear Ragapriyan,
Interpretation of Raga is subjective. I never felt your combo to be similar probably because "madhyamavathi" is more moving and versatile. By versatility i mean, it could be used for both sogam and happy situations. But the other has been used only for delectation. Hence change of even one note may change the trend o the song altogether.

Guys,
Pl. Dont just list the different songs in that raaga and turn this to another list-making thread;)), but pl. make sure to give songs corresponding to different situations and tell what the situation is.
Also, additionally it will be great if we manage to get the different songs from the same MD, as this will bring out the versatility of the composer and also help us in appreciating how the composer has played around with the same raaga for all these situations. I would try my best.
vaa vaa anbe anbe - romantic duet
kuyil paatu - feeling of longing (for her husband?)
unnai thaane thanjam endru nambi - pathos
naan paadum mouna raagam - pathos(?)
other MDs
maamarathu pooveduthu - romantic duet - manj gyan
moongililai kaadugale - romantic duet - SG
Kattaayak kaadhal vendaam - ? - i think it as middle 90s song but dunno the MD/film name. heard it in a bus somewhere
kannum kannum kollai adithaal - a happy kind of song. very rarely has sivaranjani been used in this type of situation as far as i know.
enai thedum neram, sabhai vandu serum...... oomayin raagam(cannot remember the exact words) - VJ,SPB - great song - is shankar-ganesh the MD?
i guess this song is from the early eighties and i have heard it a lot on the radio.
i have contributed a little, I'll leave it to others to bring out the rest.
if any of the above songs is not pure sivaranjani let me know.

Vijay:
The reason I did a cut and paste was I thought it will help in listing out the songs first (work already done - so that instead of going back and identifying the songs, this will help the gurus to provide insights to songs listed and possible additions to the list).
