I just listened to the song clips of Bombay dreams in the site. Man, ARR really impressed me. All of songs sounds refreshing, even our "Shakalaka Baby". He deserves more success. I especially liked the "Journey home" in female voice...it was as if Madonna is singing.
I think he is wasting his talent in TFM and HFM.
All the luck to him.

yaaro, i can see mixed reviews. nothing extraordinary, so it might be just a fair event.
imagine 3 years for poor ARR up and down to change lyrics to english? it is a pity, then. i am thinking if it were IR, he would've given revised versions of his songs for the english audience in a matter of a month. beyond that he would've ask the musical producers tto shuit it down, i bet.
8 numbers only? i mean, and that stupid rangeela, ishq bina songs? look at the taste of ALW. This guy talks about melodic quality, paul mccartney, scared the frickin cqap / sgit out of IR fans. i mean this is nonsense, here i am sgitting in my pants thinkin that our Maestro is not been compared in the league oof Paul McCartney and that ARR is the future of all music on this earth and heavens.... i mean sheer nonsense. now I can understand everything. this is like SIXTH SENSE. at the end of the dreams, you realise that this was all just another dream. ALW does not have the musical enlightenment and actually his limit is Paul McCartney, agree who has a few great melodies, but thank God IR was not the person compared. I mean, look here you all ARR fans and those Londonderry jokers of ALW, IR is beyond comparison and just take a walk in your musickals. naansense... Then there were two,now there are three. ARR, ALW and Paul McCartney. Three together will have to find another 300 hundred to get any comparison with IR.
Long Live our Chennai Dreams. Long Live IR!

Yaaro
So, your "companion" was a white chap. :)
Feeling sorry for you. :)
Whew!
i am thinking if it were IR, he would've given revised versions of his songs ...
Stop dreaming. IR was not given the chance. No sensible person even in Chennai gives him a chance any more.
There is a phrase in Malaysia for its Badminton Team: Jaguh kampong which means Village champions. And this aptly describes IR.
8 numbers only? i mean, and that stupid rangeela, ishq bina songs?
Oh, you wanted 800 numbers, all forgettable as IR's recent past? I forgot that people like you are impressed by numbers.
here i am sgitting in my pants thinkin that our Maestro is not been compared in the league oof Paul McCartney ...
Don't cleam 'em pants yet. Some thing tells me you gonna sgit some more. :)

ROTIFL, i don't clean my pants. waitin for you pal ;---) aayo rey, aayo rey, rangeela rey. arey kya re
i am only not likin the choice of songs: except for shakalaka (which has got new stanza i think), chaiyya and oollaalaa songs, i don't feel rangeela rey and the taal song are worth it. those are types of crap audiences like you digest and those were rotting in the loo. now taken back and put in london. is there a difference there? long ways to go man, the likes of you and alw...
numbers and quality do have a direct relationship, if you spend a little more time thinking about it...
and the same goes for quanity and variety....

sorry I could not complete my postings last night-
will I buy BD cassette?
I am telling this from the bottom of my heart-for ARR fans-you are beter off buying LOBS which I am going to,the next time I go to london.but anyway you all will buy it-so tell me whether I am right or wrong !
Do not expect spectacular nos or any thing.IMO(thanks tigger!),lagaan or LOBS were far better offerings.I think he should have persuaded ALW to let him do some new nos.and the new ones he has done are in a typically indian settings(the initial dappanguthu type song-one good part of this song was where ARR comes in with his trade mark humming-this gets repeated atleast 3 times, the ganesh festival song, the qawali at the end-these are typical nos which are for indian ears only)
shakalaka baby tune too deviates a lot-but meanders in and out of the original.actually, this number sounds quite good in english(the line go like shakalaka baby shakalaka baby, want to shakalaka with me(!))
but I must admit,he has adapted these tunes to theatre medium quite well.
will this show ever come to India-I seriously doubt it.the logistics of shifting or building so much of equipment to do the sfx is quite daunting.
these include stage floor which rotates, opens thru a trap door thru which villain and sometimes hero emerges,a futuristic looking jail set...
another thing is ALW will be trying to pit his production in India where his play with costly tickets will be competing with films which one can see for as little as 25 rs in bombay-so this will be out of bounds for Indian masses.and when you consider that this is a very very ordinary story line rehashed in a thousand indian movies, forget it.

ROFTL,
sorinaayi, there you go again. Match a hypothesis with another hypothesis. the statement was, 'if it were IR', you don't have to jump in with anti-IR statements which are baseless. the famous 'if it was IR' was made by critics for kizhaku cheemayile and iruvar.
Only 8 songs - doesn't need 800 dragged in.
the ROTFL can't seem to stop scratching the eternal itch. don't give the bull - he started it so i had to respond

Yaaro
Thanks for the detailed review.
Nobody can guess BO hits, so only time can tell.
Whatever the outcome, history has been created, don't you agree?
Whoever inherits ARR's position in TFM will now have to climb higher mountains.

CF
To be honest, HCIRFs do not need any fresh theeni for their feeble attempts to discredit ARR.
What I appreciate about Yaaro is that in spite of being a medium hard core [:)], he has taken the trouble to not only go for the show but also to write his views on the play.
Guess we should be delighted by this and congratulations are due to him. :)

It is quite ridiculous. Even if it were IR he would have taken 3 years. Because, it was not in his hands. It was is ALW hands and it is mind you a stage show. So the composition and stage play have to go hand in hand. They make changes and improvement thru out. IR or ARR the talk about time taken for such stage musical is foolishness. It is not a film were it is almost complete and waiting for only BGM.
I think many here want BD to fail, which is very wrong. Man, ARR is one amoung us and he has gone this far, which no body has gone ever in India. Even if we don't wish him good luck, we should atleast not curse him. He has now made paths for all other MD to explore the western world.
Only we tamilians will kalavaarivittufy other tamilian and we are proud of it. Music scene is nothing better that political scene with adimatta thondargal, who just know to shout and screem on behalf their leader. They don't have their own brain. Our music scene is turning out to be just like that.

I read that BD album is 'produced' by De Vries. How will it be different from what you hear on the stage? Only the recording quality will be enhanced?
Yaaro - are the songs orchestrated in WCM fashion or entirely pop/indipop style?
- From: yaaro (@ 195.93.48.176)
on: Sun Jun 2 10:43:38 EDT 2002
not a single no in wcm style-as you say, indipop plus the type of nos you see in sound of music or My fair lady.bombay awakens is the only no which has some wcm type of orchestration.
The opening scene -somehow they have managed to capture the hue of the early morning sky beautifully. It was almost like watching a movie.

Very well said.
Anyone who appreciates music will not throw tantrums on either IR or ARR. Even if ARR recycles 8 tunes out 18, so what? It is time for world to tap their foot for Shakalaka baby. On top of all , this is business, let those catchy number catch more people paving way for more works from ARR. Nothing suceeds like success.
