IR has, in an interview in the latest Kumudam (also covered in the front page with his snap), said that 'He has wasted 25 years of his life in film music'.
I dont know how others look at it, but I see it as a very harsh statement of total disloyalty. Its tamil film music that has given IR all the attention and praise he is receiving now. If he's a genius in composing WC, that, in any way doesnt affect anybody in TN. What affects the common man in TN is how good IR has composed in his tamil films.
IMHO, it was a statement totally unwarranted and shows utter disrespect on IR's part towards his craft.

Ilayaraaja is a genius but not God. and the so-called die-hard fans, plz understand people can have differing opinions under the sun.
Mr. Travis. Your sole aim seems to be create one more round of fight that has been going on for months here. If IR is a God for IR fans how does it bother you? You can have your favorite MD that way...Ofcourse, people can have individuval opinions as long as they don't hurt other's feelings. (IR proved to be music god for people as his picure was the first one to be drawn in thousands of name boards over Restaurants and Tea Stalls in TN.Nobody compelled them to do so.)
And the music , with the exception of kadhalukku mariyadhai and hey ram and a few, were pure trash.
I agree that his success rate fell in last few years. during this period he gave a great number of movies with good music. They have been listed n number of times..Just visit those sites and find out.
Even these few movies were nothing when compared to what Rahman was chruning out at that time.
By comparing this manner, you invite people for a fight here. Truly speaking, except few movies of ARR, none of them really impressed me. I know this hurts you....Don't worry about IR's die hard fans...Let them be mad....
let me say one thing...this argument is tiresome as people have already exhausted on this. If you post something informative...people welcome than this kind of stuffs.

well, first of all if i had hurt u comment, i am sorry, it was unintentional. Ilayaraaja's music in the late 90's is nothing to be proud of and i do admit(who am i to do this) that he is a genius.
I like his songs(earleir ones of course) also but I didnt like his comment. thats what i meant. Though its irrelevant, i dont live in tn....(my pathetic reply, ah?)

Mr. Flifo, Starting a fight, believeme, is the last thing on my mind. I just wanted to stress that Ilayaraaja is not God for the others under the sun! What I didnt elaborate in my message, seems to be my mistake. The pre-90 ilayaraaja is a genius and no one can deny ilayaraaja of that. I was just liberal enough to mention only about his latest movies. I am sorry.
And another mistake I made was that Í compared raaja to rahman. I again took a liberty becoz I compared only bcoz the music was from same period.
Just to prove my point, can I change my statement, the 90's ilayaraaja was indeed mediocre comparing to the genius who made nilavu thoongum neram, germanniyin senthen, muthu mani malai and senthazham poovil
amd finally one more thing, I maybe a fan of Rahman, but i am not childish enough to pick up fights over these stuff. And as u may have noticed, I am not being unfairly supportive of rahman.

mr. yaaro... you caught me off-guard.... who is vijay? amd when did i ever mention that he is an ol' timer?
forget about raja - rahman stuff. Raaja rules his kingdom and rahman his... and they are at peace themselves... we need not bother to pick up arguments on this rusted topic.

ok.. so many messages are comin up and i am expected to post replies... well, to all, when i started this discussion, I, in no way, wanted to degrade raja or hurt his fans , for both of which I know i am peanuts infront of a maestro like ilayaraaja. But indeed, What i mentioned in the first message and in my subsequent mesgs left out was that ilayaraaja hasnt been doing that great compared to his earlier flicks... If u have read my first mesg., i had hawkishly(and mistakenly) compared him to rahman bcoz they (the music) was of the same age.
Moreover, you must also nitce that i have written he is a genius in the same and next mesgs and no denying that. All u sane guys would understand that I cannot undo what Ilayaraaja has contributed to the industry
As i see, a few of you have done quite a research on the years of release of movies, and some asking me the point of my mesg, basically I didnt like the comment he said inmudham. Though i dont want further ueful time spent in the quest for names and years of movies released later than '94, i am sure that 1994 is 7 yrs ago... close to a decade..which is a long time to be dormant or say low-profile, my friend.. And about a brilliant reference to Sigmund Frued by another of our research team, if he had followed my mesg from the start, he would have realized I am referring to the present-day raja and not to the raja of yester-years. I didnt also fail to mention that raja had indeed come up with certain good numbers in these years in question.
This mesg of mine should clear up controvs i believe. no offense folks.

Travis!
Think for a moment on your statement I meant the only state in which you can take its people for a ride and actually get away with it is Tamil nadu...poor Raja made a statement (like a simple individual giving vent to his frustration, forgetting he is a public figure) and that's highlighted in a popular mag, debated over in forums -some of which even heap abuses on him and what not, some even talk like they paid Raja from their pockets for ullAsappaRavaigaL...do you think he has taken people for a ride and got away with it?:-))
OTOH, what ultimately happened to Mr Bill C may please be recalled for understanding the meaning of `getting away', that too with a really, really serious offence...and in the so called most advanced / developed part of the world:-))))

Well, if he's so genuinely giving vent to his frustration, why is he still into the film music scene? I mean why be in it even after 25 years of name and fame and still talking about it as if it was all along a burden?
Money part I can perfectly understand. But if he truly feels he could touch new heights with shifting to a more non-cinematic approach, why doesnt he do it?
And probably the first thing he needs to get done is have a commercial release of his much-talked-of-but-never-heard WC compositions. Last heard he was going again to Hungary to the BG of a Telugu movie starring Balakrishna. If he continues to be so much involved with film music where would he find time to give vent to his creativty the way he ideally wishes to?
Also, this oorugai and vadai paayasam analogy is getting a bit jaded now, this is what you expect from IR. Its time he found a better analogy or simply start working towards implementing it!
I wont go to serious extents that he took the people for a ride (no way). I perfectly understand that this was genuine anguish. My only concern is why doesnt he start doing what he feels he should be doing? Whats stopping him now?
