Hi,
If we talk on album level - Jeans wins the race.
But as a song - Thalata varuvyao in KM - I have many reasons to justify this.
Thalata varovaiyo:
1. Simple but great chords.
2. Greatest Counter point - When the saranam starts there is an electri piano (dx7ep) piano sound which overlaps the song with an excellent chords progression. I love playing this.
3. Bridge-the beat changes in 2nd half of sarnam Raja adds a bongo track with a Chorusreverbrated claps, which is not big addition but the melody there makes the beat more powerful.
4. The shanai piece which stays on a note for a long duration and keyboards freaks out over it. Only Raja can do it.
5. The counter point keyboards scores through out the song, there is no empty spot- evey line has a couter point which comes over the song.
(for me it the best HH song I have heard sung withtout his Ghazel tantrums, which ARR lets him do it)But Spb would have sounded been better, anyway! I love this score.
Jeans though it has great recording musically romba chinadhu. ARR good work which is spread across many songs, But Raja in 1 song he proved, he is still the RAJA.

I agree that KM has only one good song. But Jeans, I don't think all the songs are good. Forgetting the scene, 'Kannodu Kaanbathellam' (IMHO) is the only good one.

Srikanth: No words can describe the KM song better than yours. The song is a testimony to Raja's creativity, when he gets to use the sequencing technology. The shanai piece has a brilliant counterpoint (keyboard), apart from the flute on top, which is absolutely mesmerizing. A treat to listen and play. Simple melody, highly sophisticated arranegement.

As a soundtrack, Jeans scores without a doubt IMO. The transitional music within the Adhisayam song is beautifully conceived relating to the nation where each stanza is sung, the musical geography in that song unravels as a mini world trip.
Despite the irritating technology-name-dropping lyrics of Hai rabba, there are some truly poetic lines (ottrai kaalilae pookkal nirpathu un koondhalil nindraadaththaan)in there too, and if that music didn't sway anyone's hip than I don't know what dance music will. Unni Krishnan totally rules in both the songs above.
Kannodu Kaanbathellam is a bonafide classic where the old meets new. Kudos to Nithya Sree and ARR.
Columbus was a youthful song in the lines of IR's "Tholin Maelae Baaram Illae" from Ninaivellam Nithya. If you go fishing for profundity in a such a song, well. . .
Anbae Anbae had beautiful rhythm and horn arrangements and is one of HH's better numbers. It was Unni Krishnan's favorite song in the movie. VM was his effusive self, he could have left out-- "azhagiya nilavil Oxygen niraapi" though.
Vaaraayo Thozhi was just a confection, take it or leave it, it didn't do much in terms of music.
InKaadhalukku Mariyaadhai, besides "Thaalaatta Varuvaalo" there isn't a single tune that does anything for me. Even "Thaalaatta" sounded muted to me musically; I don't take to hollow keyboard drums. The change in tune with "Konjam poru kolusoli" had a classic IR touch. SPB would have flown this song sky high though.
Overall, I think "Poonthottam" is more a groundbreaking effort by IR than "Kaadhalukku Mariyaadhai". I'm hooked on "Meettaatha Oru Veenai" (I'm told by TFM pundits that this is a very difficult ragam to compose) and "Vaanaththu Thaaragaiyo" (my nominee for the best tune of the year) despite the underwhelming Hariharan. Iniya Malargal had good arrangements but then IR sang...hold it, no I don't want to go that route. I'll stop here.

Initially when DFers were raving about KM, I hadnt heard the songs, I thought it must be great, when I got hold of the cassette,I found only ennaithaalata varuvaalo to be great. Jeans - I liked kannodu and columbus. My vote is for Jeans.

Jeans Album scores much higher than KM

My vote is for "Kadhalukku Mariyadhai". I do not want to get into the technical details of every song. I love this album because I love the tunes, the musical arrangements, and the excellent interludes. What else can I say?
From KM I love the following songs:
1. Ennai thalatta varuvaalO (IR's version and then HH's)
2. Oru pattam poochi(the guitar interludes are excellent)- very different tune
3. Idhu sangeedha thirnalO(the song would be get the first rank if we compare the musical arrangements in this song with "Ennai thalatta varuvaalo")
4. Ayya veedu - IR does justice to this song
5. Oh Baby Baby - new singer Vijay also proves that he can sing well
And in Jeans, I liked
1. Columbus Columbus
2. Kannodu kanbadhellam
The others did not impress me much because it sounded as if I have heard bits and pieces of the song before(sorry guys, this is IMO and I do not want to start a fight :-)).

KM cassettes were sold only due to "Ennai Thalatta" and not the album as a whole.Jeans gets my vote simply because it is just too good.ARR blends folk beats with western, classical tunes with heavy tavil background, what else what not!!Even regarding BGm of the films I feel Jeans scores. If u notice when each character comes ARR gives the correponding song's music.Eg.. when Ramu meets Vaishnavi he gives "Anbae anbae" music which is really good.

Both of them could not be classified as good albums. In Jeans, as far as I am concerned, the song, "Kannodu kanpathellam" and "Athisayam" songs are good. Nithyasree has sung very well with a high pitch. In KM, "Ennai thalatta" (not by IR) and "Oru pattampuchi" are good. Before , I heard the song for the first time in Both the films , I was having great expectations. But both IR and ARR did n't satisfy my expectations.

Hi,
As far as I am concered KM made a bigger impact on me than Jeans.
I can bet Ennai Thallata and Ayya Voodu for that.
Ananda kuyilin pattu and oru pattam poochi were also impressive.
ARR did a good job in Kannodu and Haira.
Anbe Anbe and columbus sucks.
Reg. Poonthattam.
IR has done an excellent job in Vannathu tharagaiyo, Mettatha, Inniya malargal, vanthilirundu songs.
I will bet Ennai Thllata varuvalo as the best song so far in 1998.
One has to agree that IR started accepting(or getting) big banners after KM.
What I noticed with Fazil IR combo was atleast one song will be a big hit.

Apart from all our opinions, the Colgate (formerly philips) top 10 had KM in the first place for more than 10 weeks and jeans was there in the first place for 5-6 weeks.it was sent to 3'rd and now ,probably to 4'th or 5'th by poonthottam and priyamudan.
I think u all know that top 10 ratings r based on the number of cassette/CD sales of an album per week.
So , why arguing on a point which has been already
decided on KMs side.
PLEASE don't make this an issue and let's proceed further with *our individual* opinions.
if at all u find this posting a digression..., my apologies :-)

I CANNOT SAY ANYTHING ABOUT KADHALUKHU MARIYADHAI

Udhaya: My sentiments exactly.....I felt that, KM was good, but came on the flip side of Karthick Raja's NINI and didn't fulfil the goods for me....Jeans, with it's variety, from Classical to Pop, was really thrilling and sold out in the UK, children from the age of two were asking for us to play the tunes....that's a big impact.
Irfan: Just a little comment about 'Oru pattaan poochi'.....Have you heard 'Innum Ennai Enna Seya Pohirai' from Singravelan, also by IR? This is so similar to it, it's unbelievable....the ragam, and some of the beat section is very similar....I can't call it a 'different' type of song/tune.....This song sounded "as if I have heard bits and pieces of the song before"
Also, you guys talk of the Colgate Top Ten....How accurate is this and what proportion of the population does this cover? Is it sales across the world, or just Chennai? Please give me some details....Thanks.

geetha,
If u put oru pattampoochi in "bits and pieces of songs heard b'fore" , then every song in jeans, why jeans, every song of ARR can be put in that category.
I 'm not here to blame ARR for what he's doing, probably that's his style. reusing some good pieces and concentrate on something else to make the song sound good , in which endeavour he has succeded many a times.
I really don't know whether the whole world is covered for the top10 program.

shankar:
For your info jeans had a way higher cassettte sales, i dont have records but i read somewhere jeans has highest so far this year( i think this was three weeks after release.
and super ten is based on critics, and the flims success as well.
there are always exceptions like ulassam.
