Dear DFers,
We have been discussing a lot about TFM, composers, lyricists, singers, the new trend the (g)oldies, melody, rythym, beat etc etc etc......
In this thread i wud like to get a feedback from u all and based on ur feedback i want to decide on something which i wanted to do for quite sometime.
Yes my query is
"can u guys name a few good songs which can be choreographed for a ballroom dance?".
Hey Hold on!!!
I will tell u the background for my query also.
I am learning ballroom dance for quite sometime now. In December our batch has to choreograph our dance for some intra-school festival. I have a team of 3 with me. we four have to choreograph for three songs(basically 20 mins programme).
So I have decided to make my team dance for the tunes of IR/MSV/ARR and others. The other three are *not* indians.
All i want u guys to do is to suggest me some songs from which i will select three of them to choreograph.
It wud be of great help from u guys if ur suggestion pours in. I have to deicde by 25th of this month and start the choreography with my team. some experienced dancers from the DF can also give me some suggestions.
The song can be of waltz, tango type.
I have few songs in my mind.
The first which comes out my mind is
"Unnidam Mayangugiren"
Thanx in advance guys!

A racier number could be "Kannan Vandu Paaduginran" from Rettai Vaal Kuruvi.
If the lyrics are of no major consequence, "Nalam Vaazha".
"Uravugal Sirukadhai, Unarvugal Thodarkadhai" - from what I can remember of the song.
"Chinna Pura Onru" - if the pathos doesn't bother you much.
"Paruvame, Pudhiya Paadal Paadu"
Muthax, I am using very general guidelines for suggesting these songs. I hope they are along the line of what you expect. Can you give us more info about the choreography ? How much liberty can you take with the traditional styles ? Is it going to be radical or conventional ?
Note: I can't dance to save my life ! I can only ask questions that sound important ;-))))

Muthax - Interesting. :-))
How about Unnai ondru keitpein?
If you can get the video, you can even get some ideas for the dance movements.
Udhaya - Of course you know that Chinna penn aanapoathiley is a "copy" of Engelbert Humperdink's Que sera sera, whatever will be will be.
Surely we don't want that kind of recognition. :-))

Srinath,
I have to stick on to the basic footwork. I can place my steps anyway based on the footwork. for eg if u take Waltz, it is based on three steps. throughout the waltz dance+waltz type of music u get three beats and u dance for those three beats with the combination of turn and other graceful movements. There are some songs which has four beats but still u can suppress one beat and dance waltz. Btw, during the christian wedding the broom and the bride (ofcourse with the guests) dance waltz.
Udhaya, I did have athaan ennathan in my mind. Thanx. But nilavum malarum is a good pick it didn't strike me. After i read ur posting iam searching for that cassette in my collection. :))
Que sera sera is the song which comes in the movie "Man who knew too much" correct?
more about it soon....

Endhan uiril ulzavum Devi by ARR, from MONALISA.
It's a waltz rhythm and everytime I hear it, I think of a ballroom dance.

cram,
raasathi enn usiru enathila is a rich song.
there are lot of scope for superb fusion in that song. But i wont be able to bring the ballroom class for that song i think(me no pro :(( ).
but wud try my best to do a fusion on that song. wanted to try such a thing for quite sometime.
Geetha, i have not heard about this Monolisa. please let me know about it.
Guys, this morning while coming to office i was listening to mahanadhi songs after a long time(maybe 8-10 months).Wow!!! it took me to madras. Begining of the song Thuvakkam engae? is a beautiful piece.
Guitar in the prelude of the song Anbana thayai vittu enga nee ponaalum is also good.

Cram/Muthax: Monalisa is the Tamil version of Kabhie Na Kabhie and it had a very good song, Veesum Thendral Kaatrinile(Karaharapriya Ragam) and a revamp of Anjali from Duet in the Hindi version. It was released last year. The film was made for Hindi only, so won't be released in Tamil.
Here is more information about the film:
http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/5715/kabhi.html
This particular song is in two versions, Unni's and Prabakar's and holds a beautiful waltz.

"Kann ponna pokkile" in "Panam Padaiththavan" is a good choice. Nice waltz beat. Not coincidentally enough, the choreography in the sequence is classy, even by Western standards. Does anyone remember the name of the choreographer? Think the director of the movie is Bheem Singh, though I am not too sure. "Unnidam mayangugiren" in "Thaen Sindudhe Vaanam" which also features the hero playing a grand piano (and one of my all-time favoriites) has varying beats, doesn't quite lend itself to dancing though. I still think it is one of V. Kumar's bests.
In general, any song with an uninterrupted adhi thaalam lends itself quite well to waltz. Others like fox-trot are a little bit more complicated.

"Indru muthal selvamithu" by SPB for VKumar has a nice waltz beat.
Another V Kumar number, "Oru Naal Yaaro enna paadal" should fit in well.

muthax,
Thalaiva, just today I found the perfect ballroom waltz for you. "Paarvai Ondrae Podhumaa" a TMS/LRE duet from "Yaar Nee". LRE is amazing in this. TMS left me yearning for the more suitable AMR and SPB for this beautiful tune. All in all still a very good song since it also has Kannadhasan pouring it on perfectly for the waltz pattern.
