The direct link to the article: http://208.178.29.49/av/2003/apr/13042003/av0504.shtml
I think it is bang on target, but what can be done? We can only hope that the public rejects such songs, and this will turn out to be just a passing fad.

I remember the mentioning of Vairamuthu about PS's perfect diction in Tamil.
"Though she is of telugu native, she excels in pronounciation of tamil words for which even tamilians need to be proud of...! To know the exact pronounciation of tamil words, I give the cassettes of old songs sung by Suseela... which cane be a ready reference for a learner in tamil".
This remark is something amazing at the same time our won people who are native of tamil region are so poor in tamil diction...! Bharathiyaar indru nammodu illai... irundhirundhaal.....?

Vikatan has played a nice double role in this issue.
Blaming (although indirectly) ARR for the Tmaizh Kolai, but he becomes "Namma Rehman" when NDTV chooses him to compose their signature music!

i dont think it is only singers mistake.
the MD should teach them the correct pronounsiation.there is differance between the song sung by sadhana sargam "konjum mi'na'kkalae" and paatu cholli paada cholli.
without knowing tamil chithra sang paadariyen padippariyen extradinarily and wom natonal award for that.
latha mangeshkar able to sing valayosai kalakala song which is a hard song to sing, even by a tamil singer.
i think this problem happens only in TFM.can any malayalam or hindi people can tolerate this type of songs in thier language?

one way we feel sad for the deterioration of language but the blame should be on us public too for popularising such songs. if such songs were ridiculed and commented in public / tv / radio on its time of release, the music directors and producers would have noted and corrective action would have followed. when such songs become hits, then it is difficult to turn the tide as they will start talking about commercial aspects.
why blaming songs alone, even the spoken thamizh is like that nowadays. there is atleast one english word between two thamizh words.

Exactly.. ...To blame We shld blame MD's Producers & Directors too..
But Still When Lot Of Talent are here(South india) y shld they.... Go behind these people..
As Some one Said Valaiyosai ... EVen Latha felt Difficult in Pronouncing ...
But that is not the Same With PS,SJ,SPB,KJY
Hear Tahmizhukkum Amudendru Per Which is a Bharati dasan Poem so u can feel How important Pronounciations shld be..
Similarly Hear Kannan Mana nilayai Thangame thangam...
SPB's First song Aayiram nilave/ Iyarkai ennum..
The Stress & the PErfection matters ...
U can see Hindi NEws Channel Pronouncing "Kerala" as "Keral"
Tamilnad etc..
Will they allow us to Pronounce..Gujarat as gujar,
Uttarpradesh as Uttarprad..
This is been there for along time..
TFM shld not Encourage ... one r 2 songs are ok
not in bulk

I am curious to know from gult speakers if the unaspirated 's' doesnt exist in telugu. Coz PS sings 'Poomugam SHivakke'...or is it meant to be 'shivakka' in tamil itself? couple of occasions I thought PS says 'sh', not 's'. Amazing for one whose pronun....was so good even in the chaste 60s.
First, throw out non-tamil speaking actresses...cleansing of singers will automatically follow.

I want agree with you ,Prabhu, but pls confirm whether Simran is a non-Tamil speaking actress!
If NO ,THROW OUT ALL NON-TAMIL SPEAKING ACTRESSES.
If YES,Art is beyond petty regional squabbles and language.

Not in many Occasions She pronounces S as SH
U can Hear the Same in Vaan madhiye oh vaanmadhiye Thoodhu Shellu(not sellu)
That is due to Telugu accent..
We can consider that as negligible before
"Paruvaillai.."

Regarding the actress thingy, its a fact that Rohini or someone dubs for Jothika and other not-so-glib-in-tamil actresses. And most actresses speak Tamil in a coyish way. With such a setting just dont bother about getting the multifarious 'la's and 'na's of tamil right.
It all started when the NIITs and Aptechs became the hangout places for Ethiraj and Nirmala students before and after graduation.
The only cure is to insist that only KP Sundarambal songs are aired on MacDonalds, Pizza Hut, Dominoes outlets.
OISG, your comment on 'regional squabbles' reminds me of a true incident in my last TN-Mumbai train journey:
A vendor carrying buckets filled with mineral water bottles went around compartments shouting 'Thandaa Paani! Thandaa Paani!'. A Salem youngster, first journey outside TN, commented, 'Paavam! Dhandapani engira evano indha trainla kaanaama poitaan, tholaavaraanga!'

"I am curious to know from gult speakers if the unaspirated 's' doesnt exist in telugu"
The unaspirated "s" does exist in telugu. I don't why PS says "sh" instead of "s". But I can tell you that I have heard so many so-called chaste speakers say "sh" - e.g., MSSubbulakshmi keeps saying that all the time in her thamizh keerthanas, listen to TLMaharajan saying "Aashai nila" in the latest Buck buck song from Parthiban kanavu. Lot of my thamizh friends say that it is a very Brahminish thing.
By the way, Telugu speakers and not gult speakers would be a lot better!

Kaumudi, that is how Prabhu the Moron speaks. He has contempt for fellow people. What people should do is to spit on him contemptuously and when this forum throws out beings like him, it will once again become respectable.

I agree with Kaumudi. Though I am an ardent fan of M.S., I used to wonder why she says "sh" instead of "s", I think it is just not brahminish tamil, may be influence of sanskrit (I know there is "s" in sanskrit too). Same goes with so many other musicians too. In fact, I bought a tamil nursery rhyme casette for my lil one, and the female singer consistently pronounces "sh" instead of "s". I dont understand the idea behind it and I wish the music directors of such casettes correct such pronounication. "sh" out of place is really irritable.

Kaumudi Garu,
I'd mailed my telugu flatmate of 2 years ago who was/is a keen musician and he told me telugu has a 'sa', a 'sha' and a "3rd one which cant be mailed, only uttered over phone!"
BTW, I suppose the slang 'gult' most probably evolved from TCS(Telugu Consultancy Services) 40% of whose emps are 'gults'.

Sha instead of Sa is not JUST BRAHMINISH but NORTH-SETTLED SOUTH INDIAN BRAHMISNISH!These gangs wanted to have a different identity and thought "SHA" use would make them look "SH"ophisticated!
My cousin ( a Gang memeber from Delhi) came down south for hoildays to our village.Sitting under the tree he was bragging about Delhi with liberal use of "SHA".We were listening but waiting for an opportunity to hit back on this lousy "SHA".God was and indeed IS great.
Suddenly a Kuruvi(what is that in English?) finished its morning debts (Kalai Kadangal!) on him.I told "ithukku peruthan SHITTUK KURUVI"!

Kaumudi, there goes Prabhu the Moron again, talking contemptuously. Don't fall for his deception. This is an analysis of this creature:
1. Prabhu the Moron came to an obviously stupid conclusion that only one person can post from 100s of IP address.
2. When given proof that he was wrong, Prabhu the Moron instead of graciously admitting defeat, took a complete different path and started singing a different tune.
3. When proven that Prabhu the Moron was looking for gay sex, Prabhu the Moron started using obscenities and began fantasising about mothers (ivanum oru thamizhanaa!)
4. When he felt that he was losing ground Prabhu the Moron began seeking support. And what a support he sought, someone who he had just abused a few days ago.
5. When Prabhu the Moron failed to get the support he thought he would get, he now began to abuse the innocent third party.
6. Now Prabhu the Moron pretends to be the victim, when all the while he has been harrasing people who had differing opinions. If he had not pulled my name unnecsaarily, this analysis of his filthiness would not have happened and no one would be wiser to Prabhu the Moron's a$$hole ways.
Now Prabhu the Moron's mask has been torn apart for the whole wide world to see. LOL
See this thread on how this analysis came about:

LOL, poor Kaumudi becoming the target of a stray wild boar :)
Even in Medhuva Medhuva song, Chitra sings 'Kangal Moodalle'. Is the usage of the participle grammatically correct, or did the lyricist deliberately sodhapify the word to suit the tune?(I dont think Chitra makes pronun.. goofs in tamil, she sings it as its meant to be sung).
