Off late, K S Chitra has become one of my hot favourites amongst female singers. Her voice has a unique and rich timbre which I really enjoy. lets take this opportunity to discuss songs by her in Tamil and various other languages - Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. Her songs sung under the tutelage of Ilayaraja, AR Rehman, Ravindran et al are really excellent, moreover she has a delightful classical touch as is seen in her rendition of "alaipayuthe" and the Sindhubhairavi songs. She has done a great deal of Hindu and Christian devotional albums in Southern languages...lets discuss those. My favourite Chitra song so far remains "gopika vasantham" and her duet with SPB in the Telugu
movie Swathikiranam. What a voice and that sharpness!
So please, lets discuss her songs!! :-)
(If this topic has been discussed in full detail - similar to the Vani Jairam thread - please post a link to it). Otherwise lets make this an encyclopedia of KSC songs.

Also UK rendered it kind of funnily in terms of the accent. For e.g. he says "nae" for "ni", "sA" (A as in bat)instead of "sa" etc.
Singing ni as nE (neigh) is characteristic of a hindustani singer. But I wonder what he tried by making that sa sound different.

I thought only "ri" (sung as "rae") and "da" (sung as "dha") were the two swaras sung differently in hindusthani. Why ni and sa? I have never heard hindusthani singers singing differently. Did you get a chance to listen to the songs though? My guess as to why he did those fancy tricks in the song is that the character in the movie demanded it.
Also, a general question: How do you guys manage to italicize and bold the text when you post responses? I have been trying in vain to do this. Can someone help?

Yes. I have heard many sing ni as nE.
To italicize use:
< i > expression i >
For bold:
< b > expression b >
without the spaces.

I decided to wake up this thread which has been sleeping for way too long. One lovely song by KSC alongwith SPB is "Chiluka kshemamaa". Nice song with lovely improvisations by both KSC and SPB. The song itself is kind of high-pitched. But both the singers deliver the song effortlessly. IMO, this song is the cream of the crop. It comes from the bang..bang..Bappi Lahiri (I still don't understand how this guy got to compose music for so many telugu movies those days). No wonder it went unnoticed among the telugu film song rasikas.

Kaumudi..I was thinking about waking this thread up this morning. good u did it. And I wonder why you asked for KSC 's malyalam songs when I had listed many already. Are you asking people to pour in more mallu numbers ?

I was asking about malayalam songs with SJ and KSC singing together as a duet, not their individual songs.

Hi,
This topic has been very interesting, not to mention very informative.
Chitra's songs from Vamsi movies like April Ist Vidudala and Chettukindha Pleader are very melodious. Especially Allibilli Kalalaa Rave...from Chettukinda pleader. Illayaraja has given some of his best tunes for Vamsi. Even Detective Narada (another Vamsi movie ) has some good songs of Chitra....it's sad that those days when the movie flopped, the songs went
unrecognised !!
In Guru, wasn't it Chitra who sang Devasangeetham...with K.J.Yesudas?? Am not too sure...but it it's her, then she did a great job bringing out the pathos in that song.

Chitra's first recorded song was for the Malayalam movie NJAAN EKANAANU, composed by M.G. Radhakrisnan.
First Tamil song was "poojaikkEththa poovidhu..."

Anu, It was KSC who sang "Deva Sangeetham".
Naaz, thanx.
What do you all think is the toughest film song that KSC had sung, with lots of vocal calisthenics (to borrow AVR's phrase), breath control etc..?

on: Mon Jul 29 11:03:27 EDT 2002
Among the few songs in malayalam that I've heard the one song of KSC that impressed in terms of her vocal calisthenics (borrowed again!) was Yamunaa nadhi ozhukum... from Devadaasi.

Deva sangItham was sung by (i heard a teenager) called rAdhikA tilak. quite well sung (but i think rAjA thinks otherwise :-( ).

Yeah, the female singer deva sangeetham doesn't sound like chitra at all, especially in the first charanam. The credits, however, in MIO are given to chitra. But this singer's voice seemed to me like a mixture/hybrid of sujatha and chitra. Also, KJY's voice was not too appealing to me in this song. It seemed like he was struggling a little bit here and there in the song. I think, his voice is slowly aging too!

raaja.com lists the singer as rAdhikA tilak.

Kaumudi,
The song 'Chiluka Kshemama' is actually composed by Saluri Vasu Rao. Some how Bappilahari ended up taking the credit for that song. I always used to wonder how bappilahari managed to churn out a decent song like that.. until I came to know the above fact.

Are you sure? Where did you get the info from? The music sounds so much like Bappi's music. I am still ready to believe that it was Bappi's original song since even the worst of music composers did have their best offering atleast once in a blue moon.
MS
I am not sure why they didn't include KSC's song in the movie. The CD is however available in www.themahal.com in the malayalam section. See if you would be interested in buying it. That's where I bought it from.

Kaumudi,
I am pretty sure I read it in multiple places. I even read VasuRao's interview some where on the net long back where he mentioned that fact. Not sure which site though.
I tune is VasuRao's. Orchestra is by Bappi lahari.
Speaking of KSC, 'Ya Ya Yaa, yaadava unnai' from Devaragam (Malayalam/Tamil) is my all time KSC favourite. MMSrilekha did the telugu version and it is not up to KSC mark. Did any one listen to it?
