How about providing links/pointers for IR’s sumaaru/mediocre/avg/ok songs that have not been great hits and/or very popular? Basically, there are many IR songs that fall in this category and this can be considered an attempt in bringing certain lesser known/unknown songs to light. The links will help us listen to the songs during the day at work place and/or as a pastime:) They could be good in patches or one may like a few specific moments of a song that would make them suggest the song to a friend. So, without being selfish share what you enjoy!
You can even supplement the link with a small note explaining what to look for in a specific song. I also request DFers not to post more than 5 (or maybe 10:)) links/pointers a day in total so that we can do some work, at work place.
PS: Post only when you have the links/pointers.

* Song: Pattu Poo Poo Film: Veera Singers: KSC & Chorus
Link/Pointer: dhool.com -> search for the movie Veera
A soft, melodious aerobic-exercise song. A very different song for Chitra. Sure she would have enjoyed singing the song, moreso, the only charanam. One of those few songs with only one charanam.
* Song: Raathiriyil Paadum Paattu Film: Aranmanai Kili Singers: AM, Minmini, MV
Link/Pointer: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> Browse for movies starting in alphabet A-> song no. 83
A soft and slow native melodious number with minimal instruments. One can visualize the paasamulla “aanandha kanneer” when MV sings the second charanam. I also liked the second interlude.
* Song: Vaarayo Film: Aathma Singers: Mano
Link/Pointer: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> Browse A-B listing-> song no. 91
A rare opportunity for Mano as he gets a Carnatic classical song this time. And he renders it quiet well.
* Song: Thottaalae Podhum Film: Iniya Uravu Pooththadhu Singers: Mano
Link/Pointer: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> Browse I-J listing-> song no. 97
A typical song of IR for SPB that was given to Mano.
Nothing special in the pallavi. The first charanam is fast, racy and more playful with the typical IR trademark in the tune. Just at the end of the first interlude you can visualize the hero recollecting the slaps he got from the heroine:) And then, unexpectedly, the second charanam turns soft, more serious and emotional with tabla and native dholaks/drums accompanying the singer, conveying the hero’s seriousness about his feelings for the heroine. Very good rendering by Mano. Another good attempt of IR in trying to use different tempo, pitch (sruthi) and convey different mood in each of the charanams.
* Song: Or Poomaalai Film: Iniya Uravu Pooththadhu Singers: Mano, KSC & Chorus
Link/Pointer: dhool.com -> search for movie “iniya”
http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> Browse I-J listing-> song no. 95
This song might remind 3-4 other songs. Neverthless, a decent melody. Probably got to do with the raagam used as tunes in this raagam and others like Chakravaakam, Bhoopalam sound quiet similar. The intro to the song is good. In the pallavi, the “mannan maarvil, thavandhidum podhu” (pardon any spelling mistakes) part has something that I liked. Piano has been put to good use.

KS,
No intentions for a fight from my end, But I feel 'Raaththiriyil Paadum Paattu' and 'Vaaraayoo' are very good numbers from IR ... Particularly the second one ... I am not able to believe that you treat them mediocre :-)

* Song: Engae Engae Sugam Engae Film: Iniya Uravu Pooththadhu Singers: SJ
Link/Pointer: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> I-J listing -> song no. 93
A simple soft song. Pleasant rendering by SJ. She emotes so easily that it seems very simple. No amarkalam:-)
* Song: Amman Koyil Kumbam Film: Aranmanai Kili Singers: SWL, MNM
Link/Pointer: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> A-B listing -> song no. 81
A typical song on Amman with the usual instruments and IR touch. The charanams with the 2 female leads and the chorus is quite ok. Don’t really know what is special but felt this song to be better than many ‘such filmi songs’. People who can’t bear the usual dholaks/koothu may find it difficult to listen to the full song.
* Song: Suttum Sudar Vizhi Film: Siraichaalai Singers: KSC, MGS (MG Sreekumar)
Link/Pointer: http://www.nexus.internet-engineer.co.uk/search.html -> R-S listing -> song no. 230
An unique song of its kind that is even difficult to conceive. Though it may not sound very attractive initially for it is not really rhythm oriented, IR has done many unusual things in this song that have gone unnoticed. The interludes are interesting with changing moods and are a composer’s delight (may not be listeners’:-(). The real attraction is the pallavi towards the end of the song as KSC sings “ho ho ho ho” – another of IR’s take-off on cuckoo that has usually gone to SJ. It sounds good in KSC’s voice too. Give this song a try at least for this.

They are certainly not mediocre. But then, they are neither great hits nor popular. Adhuthan koncham varuththama iruku. Hence, an attempt to bring them to light.

* Song: Priyathama Thama Sangeetham Film: Aalaapana (Telugu) Singers: SJ
Link/Pointer: http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/s/?q=alapana&c=030C 3rd song.
A good beat-oriented, pacy, yet, soft tune by IR exclusively for SJ. The intro is unusual, short and great. For its time, the modern beat with tabla left the listeners awestruck. The tune seems simple yet captivating. However, an overtly romantic mood of IR and SJ would stop you from playing it aloud at home which is why other songs of this film became more popular. Director Vamsy used to do a lot of R&D in his films and so there is good r&d in the interludes too, the second one is better. SJ’s rendering is unparalleled.

"there is good r&d" = " there is good amount of r&d" :-)
