Last year I did a show on Ilayaraja for Deepavali. IT was so great a hit that the ASTRO Private TV Station is repeating on 9 NOvember at 4.00 pm Malaysian time. This is called RAJANNA RAJATHAAN- covering 25 years of Raja's music contribution. From Annakkili to Azhagi. A great hit. If you can, pls do catch it. You can post your comments on the show here, and I'll respond to them.
Thanks.
If you want to post comments on older songs, pls go to this archive. There you'll find the previous songs/episodes indexed as separate threads. Post your comments on the appropriate thread.

Sharath,
Thanks for joining the thread. Ilayaraja appears with different musicl instuments in many photos. guitar may be his favi=ourite instument, given the background that he won gold medal from the London Trinity College. I am not able to comment if he was one of the top 10 in the world.
Whenever i want to listen to this song, I watch it over the movie -DVD or VCD- all because the original sound track in the movie is a wholesome piece, where Raja displays a masterly order in giving life to the guitar. What we hear in the cassette or vinyl record is somewhat a shortened version.
Perhaps with the knowledge you already possess on guitaring, you could assist in throwing more light on this song.
Thank you so much. I am sure readers are waiting for your inputs.
Since you ahve just come in, you could also make a trip over the earlier songs and give comments in the new hub.

Mani Sir,
I would like to add the song "Kodai Kaala Kaatre" from "Panneer Pushpangal" to your mention of En Iniya Pon Nilaave in Moodu Pani as another song where Ilayaraja has shown glimpses of his mastery over using a guitar to perfection.
I also read somewhere (May be in this forum) that he never plays the guitar for his orchestra to demonstrate.. and for some of his compositions his orchestra will take great pains to ensure perfection.
Talking about other landmark songs you have discussed, all threads were quite informative. I liked "Sevvanthi Poo" song from "16 vayathiniley" and Senthilv's excellent description of the song picturisation.
Ilayaraja himself told in an interview that two directors that come to his mind on song picturisation as Bharathiraja and Vamsi (telugu).
But it is a different story that the same bharathi raja didn't quite picturise few gems like "Poonkadhavey" from Nizhalgal well.

Sharath,
Ilayaraja, a great genius is much different from hie predecessors and even his contemporaries. in the pre Raja period, the MDs used to write down seperate notes for each of the instruments and the musicans in the band. that would take a long time. In the case of Ilayaraja, he would sit and write the entire notes on a notation sheet. That note would inlude all instruments. As he writes, all the musicians would stand around him and take down notes related to their instruments. The work is over within 15 minutes fora good song. Then the rehearsal on the floor in the presence of Raja. Then he goes into the recording panle and sits with the Sound engineer. One more final rehearsal and then the final recording! I was a witness to this once. I could see the tension in the faces of the musicians. That Raja demanded a high standard was clear.
No others had done this before Raja. That was the speed at which notes were taken down. To put it in another way, that was the speed at which ideas emanated from the brilliant mind of Raja.
Likewise, while doing re-recording for a movie, MDs used to watch the scene a few times. raja used to compose as the movie scene rolls on in the screen in the studio. Another great spee. Chinnathamby songs were supre hits- all composed within 45 minutes!
I have some rare photos. How am I to scan and post them in this site?

"Illaya Nila Pozhigirathu" is one of the master pieces in IR-SPB combo. My northie friends liked tamil version to hindi version to which they were used to.
Manisekharan,
There are plenty of songs you can bring forth with ur wonderful write up. I have a small request to you. I have heard the song "melam kotta neram varum", but hv no other idea about that song. If possible can you write about that song also.
Regards,
Ragavan

ilaya nilA - not just a landmark song for IR, PM is a landmark album for TFM. This one brought so much recognition for the MD thanks to Raja which remained so till very recently.

"Ilaya Nilaa Pozhigiradhae..." is a very good song from the stable of Raaga Devan.
The lyrics add beauty to this song, very much impressive and do make a mark.
Particulary, look at the lines
"Mugilinangal Alaigiradhae Mugavarigal Tholaidhanavo
Mugavarigal Thavariyadhaal Azhudhidumo Adho Mazhayo"
Raining or the fall of Rains is a natural Phenomenon.
See this lyricist; he finds a reason for the rains too.
The clouds are moving or wandering up the sky.
You know what does it seem to the lyricist, when he sees this ?
He sees that the clouds are wandering because they had lost the address, which makes them wail and the tears that are thus shed are these rains.
Wow !
"Mazhaikkum Oru Arthathai Karpikiraar Indha Kavingar."
If I am not wrong, I think, this is called "EduthuKaattu Vuvamai Ani" in Tamil Literature.
As many members have said, Guitar dominates and drives this song.

One of the things that always comes to my memory is Mohan moving his fingers up and down the guitar bridges, pretending to play the guitar !!! Sve Shekhars annoyance at his playing the guitar is my own reaction !! ;)
But as a song, Raja has mesmerised us and I agree with Mr.Manisekaran in that there is not another song where IR had given so much thought to the composition of the guitar melody. I have a question for mr.manisekharan. Has IR ever played this bit in a live concert or to an audience? And if not, is there anyway anyone can request him to do that? (I know he was planning a world tour shortly)

Another query. Who is the MD for the song , "En Purushanthaan, enakku mattumthaan" (the Suhasini-Radha-Mohan) song?? That song has brilliant guitar pieces as well - in fact the finest after "Ilaya Nila".

It's been a week for me lots of songs to catch up on,
Manishekaran, thanks for the info on "Maadha Un Kovilil" song
On "thamthana thamthana taalam" song from 'Pudhiya vaarppugazh", I remember reading in a magazine in the 80's ( I don't know how true it is), they had mentioned usage of
" Electric Veena" by IR , is there such thing some thing similar to " electric Guitar" and as someone else mentioned here and by Saravanan in some other thread, Veena Gayathri had played Veena for many songs of IR in the early years.
About the long "pallavi", it was told by IR himself in one of those interviews in SUNTV on a Diwali day ( that program was conducted by gangai Amaran I think who had made a total mess, showing IR as King entering some Darbar hall in Prasda studio etc), when Ir was asked about "Keladi Kanmani" song by SPB with that long charanam, IR immediately pointed out as it was nothing new and not a great deal , and mentioned his earlier compositions including " Kanamaniye " and the reference "Thamathana " song, personally it sounded ( in that interview)to me as if IR didn't feel it was a great deal about " Keladi Kanamani" song to have sung by SPB ( In my opinion ) despite the fact that every music fan like that song that it was a great song composed by IR and very well rendered by SPB.
Ravi KS Ravichandran,
I thought the same way about "Kanne Kalaimaane" song that the violin back up all along the track was probably instrumental track retained, I remember few other songs which have the tracks distinctly appearing prominant in the background
1." hey paadal onru" in the charanam
2."paruvame pudhiya paadal" the last repeat pallavi in fact appears like the singer missed the track and briefly the back ground track appears before SJ starts it again ( some body clarify this, I used to notice that in Radio Broadcasts initially, but I hear in every recording the same , cassette, CDs )
SJ solo songs with IR, it is a mammoth of a topic for me, as I invariably get lost as to choose the best, I don't know if one lifetime
(with an average listening time of 1 decent hour a day amidst ur college days, work days, ippo pondatti, pillai kutti ngaloda..etc etc..) is enough to just enjoy those gems ( if u are serious listener for 45 years before u are partially deaf between age 20 to 65 years and with your cholesterol, BP, sugars favoring ur life expectancy, one gets a mere 684 days at the above listening rate i.e. less than 2 years in our life time..... Raaja .. U have done too much to us and we have too little time to enjoy..)
Like Disney cartoon research lab tour, CNN network tour and many such guided tours, I wish ( imagine) some decant recording studio should organize a tour "A typical day with IR and his music" as how he begins his work for a typical movie, the spontaneous flow of his musical thoughts, the tunes, the notations, the mini rehearsals the recording of a song and finally a full session of BGM scoring everything to watch as a spellbound spectator ( wouldn't this be cool, ..and it is one of my life time ambition /dream to watch...Manishekaran Oru Pass vaangi tharuveengala.....just kidding about the pass)
Lastly, Manishekaran, didn't we jump from song 5 to 13? are we revisting those remaining songs later?... please we will wait till next Diwali if needed.
SenthilV ,thanks for those links I will look into those links.
Guitar and Raja, another great song I like with amazing Guitar work " En Purushan than Enakku Mattum Than" from G sayvadillai, many of the pre Annakili work with GKV in Kannada had some great guitar work.
RR, is there a way Manishekaran share those rare pictures of IR thro' the forum?
I just finished reading a 8 part autobiographical article of Maestro IR written by Lyricist turned MD K Kalyan ( Kannada) in a kannada magazine ( Roopathara) which had some very rae pics. of IR, one with RD Burman is too cool, he literally looks like a school kid.
