Hi everybody. I have taken the pain of typing up this very long and very good interview of Rahman's that came on AVMAX on their first ever issue this month. It's a cover story(interview) on Rahman and he has given some really great answers. Read the interview!

though the lagaan song is catchy...(kaalamegha) but sounds dangerously close to Bhol Sajni and also has traces of telephone mani pol in certain parts. I wonder why rahman had to do this recycle. I am disappointed. Now I expect to see enough flames thrown at rahman for this at newtfmpage!

"catchy tunes podara varaikkum naama pronunciation enna sodhappinaalum makkal kandukkamaattaanga appadeengara attitude.. "
Actually Vijay, I think ARR does not have an attitude..he has a marketing strategy :) Pronounciation/new voices are part of the product features. He has been in the advertising industry and hanging out too much with Management type people :) Moreover he is a 'cool dude'. Cool ude's never care for old-fashioned things like thamizh paRRu' . Well atleast thats my impression of ARR.

Check out the interview of ARR in Chutti Vikatan. All the questions are supposedly by Kids...but I think their families may have had influences over the questions:-)) http://www.chuttivikatan.com/

01. Which is the song in which you really had to slog?
I slog for almost all the songs. Sometimes the song might not live upto our expectations. The lyrics or the vocals might let us down. I need to find out where the problem is and rectify it. That way 'pachai nirame' (from alaipayuthey) gave me a tough time. It had about 6 or 7 extra tunes in it. I felt that if I removed them then it will sound really good. So I worked hard on it and made it good.
02. You compose music beautifully. You sing very beautifully and also look equally good, why dont you act in movies?
I feel if I get into a job I should do it with all my heart. I should not get into everything and lose whatever is in my hand. I'm more of a studio person. I enjoy only the behind the screen jobs.
03. What is a Broadway musical, Rahman uncle?
Our cinema started with cinematisation of famous stage dramas like 'Manohara'. Now cinema has become drastically different from dramas/plays. But plays/stage productions are even today as popular as cinema. They too convert stage plays into movies. Sound of music and My fair lady are two good examples for this. There are plays which are running for about 30 years non-stop! A unique feature in some of the plays is its music. They even use music for narration and to move the story forward. We could find a parallel to these plays in our traditional 'therukoothu'. But these are very rich therukoothus!
Such musicals are also called Broadway musicals.
04. Name one old tamil song which you love?
'Unnai ondru ketpen, unmai solla vendum'
05. I also want to be like you, always smiling and pleasant and very calm. What should I do Rahman sir?
Have faith in God. Nothing can happen beyond Him! Make all efforts to avoid any problems, but always remember that at one stage you have to let go and trust him for the rest.
06. If God appears in front of you and gives you a boon, what'll you ask?
Like the way a mother takes care of all her children with no bias, God looks after his people with no bias. So if God does appear in front of me and grants me a wish...I'd tell him 'you've given me all the knowledge and have done me a lot of god, so I'd just want your love always, nothing more'!
07. Uncle, which instrument is very easy to learn for us kids? Which is the first insturment you learnt?
The instrument is not important. The teacher is more important! If you have a good teacher you can learn any instrument easily. By the way, I learnt and played the Piano, first!
08. Uncle, what do you like apart from music?
Where there is no music, you have silence. I enjoy the peace in silence.
09. Do you think you've lost something in life because you came into the music world so young in life?
The days when you study, work and earn have changed. You learn music, computers but are also getting into all other things in life and also earning at the same time. I made that entry a bit too early, thats all. So I dont feel I've lost anything.
10. You dont give much chances to existing singers and encourage new singers. Why is that?
Its not like that. When you try out something new you also need a fresh twist to the usual voice. So I seek voices to suit that requirement. It could be an existing singer's voice or maybe a new singer.
11. I'm (so is my friend!) jealous of your long, dark hair! What's its secret?
No secrets on that. I just dont have the time to take care of it! So it grows!
12. We've heard film songs from you, patriotic songs from you. When will you give us our (children's) song?
Vamde Mataram was created only for youngsters and kids. 'chanda sooraj' song was actually for you kids!
13. Why do you use strange words like Ajooba and Hojaaye? Is it beacuse you like hindi?
Both are not hindi words. Ajooba is a arabic word meaning 'wonder'.
Since we were shooting in the wonders of the world for that song in Jeans we included that word. Hojaaye is a sinhalese word, meaning 'enjoy'. We added that to the Tenali song to add a sinhalese touch to the character that Kamal was playing.
14. We like your songs only after repeated hearings and never the first time! Why is that?
There are songs which one can like instantly, but invariably those songs might have an element from an older song which might have hooked you. When you try something new it'll take sometime to sink in.
15. These days parents seldom take their kid's interest in music seriously. They always ask us to concentrate only on our studies.
What do you feel on this?
Only when you have a protesting situation you'll realise the true value of something. If they buy you all the instruments you ask for and help you learn music, you'll lose interest very soon! If you are forced to protest you'll learn its value and get deeply interested in it. But in any case, it goes without saying that your studies should be your first priority. Everything coems only after that.

arrfan :-)
I think people felt u were joking, and so they didnt respond. Titan music is indeed by Mozart. If u get a chance, watch this movie called "Amadeus". It is quite wonderful. (The title of the movei fearures the same theme incidentally)

hari,
i initially thought that the titan music is by Mozart, but it has been listed in the ads composed by ARR in Reporter's interview of ARR given above.

arrfan:
Titan Ad seems to have had two musics. One is the Mozart one and the other one is ARR's. I read it some where in rehmanonline.com (I think). A person was answering to a similar question in it.

But I thought Titan music was by Vivaldi.
- From: observer (@ 144.92.164.198) on: Mon Apr 2 12:25:46 EDT 2001
Titan music is quoted from Mozart's 25th symphony.
- From: kiru (@ 192.138.149.4) on: Mon Apr 2 12:26:09 EDT 2001
No Titan music is by Mozart. It is Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. It should be easy to tell Mozart from ARR :)
- From: NJ (@ 204.255.14.188) on: Mon Apr 2 12:49:58 EDT 2001
kiru,
'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik' is a different piece by Mozart. The correct one is 25th symphony.
'Agenda Watch' Music is 'Cuckoo Waltz'

I don't think ARR played music for Titan Ad with complete orchestration. (old Ad.) He must have played piano for the little girl who plays piano in a party. I vaguely remember that I listened to original string instruments in the Old Titan ad.
