This 80's teenage movie had nice songs but didn't do well commercially...if this movie would have been out now, it would still be better than the recent clones of so called teenage movies triggered by "thulluvatho illamai"...
All the songs in this movie were hits...music by IR..
poonthalir ada by sp bala & s janai
anantha raagam ketkum kaalam by uma ramanan
kodai kaala katre by malaysia vasudevan..
a very nostalgic 80's movie...

'vengaaya saambarum..' is another song.
another reason why the movie didn't do well was the wave of AlaigaL Oyvathillai which released almost at the same time and became a super hit.
the humming pieces with the guitar in background are great in 'poonthaliraada' song and beautiful singing by SPB & SJ. it will rank as one of their best duets. the opening music of this song is a real treat.
Evolution Vii, you stirred up a real nostalgic song... have to hear it today.

Yeah, PP got drowned in the mammoth Alaigal wave.
PP was GA's production where as AlaigalOyevathillai was IR's production

The movie was a moderate success. Good story, great songs, ooty location everything added to this movie. Only drawback was actor Suresh.

The film was directed by Bharathi-Vasu (Santhana Bharathi and P.Vasu), if I remember right.

Mythila has put it correctly...this movie was drowned by Alaigal Oivathillai. Both had great songs but it is the down-to-earth(you can even say below the belt!) dialogues by Maivannan and Kannan s (camera) work on Radha(Heroine) which helped AO to score over PP.
PP was practical, subtle, matured and hence failed!I think P Vasu learnt his lessons from this movie then took to Chinnathambi stuff!Santhana Bharathy stayed put ,got fewer offers and is now Kamal-centric.Their next JV was Madhumalar(PRatap-Suhasini-Ratheesh) was a failure too.It had music by GA and "Anandame Alaipayudhey" was one good song.

Madhumalar s other song
"Vaaname..Mazhai megame engu nee innisai paadi vaa" by KJY/Uma Ramanan was heavily inspired by "PpondhaliR aada" from PP but an ordinary song.

dorai..was it suresh's 1st movie though it was shanthi krishna's 1st???..maybe the movie would have done better if it had mohan...but then he could have been abit old for a student role...so i guess looking at the batch of actors at that period, suresh was the only gamble available...& failed...lucky though karthick was not considered for the role...
hey geeth, the 80's era had nostaligia written all over it...don't u think

Memories are back when i came to this thread. As Geeth and Mythila said it failed because of the success of Alaigall Oyvathillai. Producers missed the timing. Maybe they thought that BarathiRaja will not make it big, after two successive commercial losses in Kallukull Eeram and Nizhalgal.
Even now if it is released, it has to be careful of films like Thulluvatho Illamai.
On comparison notes, both PP and AO had the same subject. Lovestory of high school students. (One step lower to Oruthalai raagam). The difference is PP story was in campus and AO was during the vacation period. Hence AO had more fun in the beeches, around trees, thaamarai kulam etc. PP had only Lovedale and that was a beauty. But the crowd went with a janaranjaka AO, a taste which still stands today. PP like movies are a bit risky and timing of its release is very very important. People must be bored with gaana hits and there should be no worldcup around.
Today i listned to Kodai kaala kaatre and Poonthalliraada..... no words to describe.....

Dobri,
No comparison between PP and AO. AO is a movie par excellence in all aspects compared to PP. BR's picturization in his early days is very innovative to say in tamil "Kavidhai Nayam". Robert Rajasekaran was the director of PP and the picturization of the movie/songs was only average and hence was not a big hit. As far as the music goes both films had exceptional music from IR.
But BR's imagination is uncomparable to anyone in 80's. That made the difference.
Your posting gives the impression as though AO was janaranjaka masala type movie and I differ with you. AO is a sentive subject, maturely handled by BR without making it boring.

PP was directed by Bharathi Vasu not Robert Rajasekaran. My apologies.

I just listened to Aanandha Raagam song from PP. Could someone comment on the style of the composition. What kind of style is this song based on ?. The violins, flute and shenai are mindblowing and flowing like an "Aruvi"

Paneer Pushpangal dealt with "first love" as a moment of joy, confusion and a significant first step into adulthood.
Alaigal Oyvadhillai's approach to "first love" was romantic, eager and physical.
Shanti Krishna kept the dignity within "love"
Radha was just happy to be hot, restless (that whole hormonal thing,) and bothered.
It wasn't the first time that reason lost out to repression at the box-office.

AO was more of a village love story whereas PP was more of a city love story...The brahmin-christian love story was more like a trend-setter which started more such subjects like adutha aathu albert, ranuva veeran etc...IMO, PP was a much better venture than AO, but for a lay-man the inter caste love is more understandable and logical rather than the love at school during those days..

Thiru and Naaz,
Its not the inter caste love or sexual hormonal thing or the city vs village story that made the difference between PP and AO. The sheer difference is in the screenplay and the approach adopted by BR which was way better. A good example is the picturization of a very average song like "Vizhiyil Vizhundu" in AO. In the line, "Unvelli kolluzugal Vidhiyil Ketal ah..ah..", BR mixes it (between the ah..ah..) with the reflection of sunlight on the sea waves. When you get a chance watch it and I am sure you will enjoy it. There are several bit songs not in the CD which appears in the movie with great photography and choice of the backdrop. Even, the scene when Radha slaps karthick has a great backdrop. An ordinary carnatic song like Dharisanam kidaikadha (based on Hindolam, sung by IR) is picturized very well. Radha and Karthick were first timers in this movie and acted very well (BR trained them well probably as you can see in emotional scenes both of them just mimicking their master's acting).
In summary, a very orginary story, well handled by BR, well picturized and well presented. That made the difference.
In my opinion, PP had even better songs than AO. But failed to make a big impression because of mediocre handling of them.

Thanks for your post. I believe Kadhal Oviyam had songs that were just as good, if not better, than AO and PP. The screenplay and acting were also competent. The only difference: Radha was modest and fully clothed. The film was a wash-out and made many a distributor an overnight pauper.
Now compare this with Valibame Vaa Vaa (the songs were not a spot on AO,KO or PP,) which was crass in every sense - and yet performed better than Kadhal Oviyam and Panneer Pushpangal at the box-office.
Why?
Once again, the answer has to be the audacious bodacious Radha. (This was even the case with downright unendurable torture-fests like Muthu Engal Soththu and Payum Puli etc - which should have been doomed, but not surprisingly did more than moderate business.)
Why underestimate the tamil male's need/craving for nudity??

Shanthi Krishna is the sister of Director Suresh Krishna (kadamaikaNNiyamkattupAdu , sathyA, aNNAmalai, bAshA, veerA, aahA, sangamam and now the most infamous aaLavandhAn & bAbA:) )

AO had
1. the interreligion love where the hero and heroine are denouncing their religion in the end which was sensational at that time due to Mandaikadu episode.
2. Glamourous starcast(Radha, SilkSmitha, Karthik).
3. PP had only one track while AO had an interesting sidetrack of SilkSmitha- Thyagarajan .
I personally liked PP better than AO in all aspects, including music.

What i cud infer from both PP & AO is IR's class. Two different movies released at the same time.See the difference between the songs.
Kodai Kaala Katrey - simplistic yet beautiful guitar
Poonthalir Aada - SPB as cool as always and the soothing chorus work..one of my all time fav charanam..
Anandha Raagam - Orchestration to new places.personally i was never impressed with this song.Felt like Uma Ramanan is straining tooo much and looks tiring.Neraya takes eduthathanala
irukkum.:-)
PP wud hav been a success if its released now.A movie of this kind wont be accepted by rural people. Its kind of story which preaches youngsters with ooty convt backdrop..without vulgarity..
Regarding AO,shud be in the top ten of all time IR's great hit movies..IR saved the best for BR.All songs are classic. My personal fav being 'kaadhal ooviyam paadum kaaviyam'.
Eve teasing, usual BR sexual contents, poetic picturisations,RADHA factor(when compared to Shanthi Krishna radha attracts more crowd) etc etc made AO success which automatically made PP a failure..

'Poonthalir Aada' is my pick, a classic that can be rewinded again and again.
