Lata, Rahman to perform together in city

HYDERBAD: People of Hyderabad are in for a treat on Valentine's Day on Friday as two towering giants of Indian music, Lata Mangeshkar and A.R. Rahman, will be performing here live.
Melody queen Lata and popular young music director Rahman will enthral the audience at a concert at G.M.C. Balayogi Stadium on Hyderabad's outskirts.
Called "Unity of Light", the concert is part of Rahman's 15-city international tour. But the Hyderabad leg will be a special one because it brings together the two great artistes. Ahead of the concert, Lata and Rahman promised a musical extravaganza and showered praises on each other.
"It is an honour for me to work with a great singer who has been awarded the Bharat Ratna," said 37-year-old Rahman, referring to India's top civilian honour that has been conferred on septuagenarian Lata.
"He is younger than me in age but elder in work," said Lata, whose musical career spans 60 years.
Lata, who started singing at age 13, said she had worked with many renowned music directors but found Rahman's style different. "Though I have done only six songs with him, I have enjoyed working with him. We do the recording without involving a third person. Then we mix the music and chorus. I get full freedom in working with him."
Asked how they worked so well together despite the generation gap, Rahman said music does not know age, caste or religion.
"The age gap is there, but it does not come in the way of our work," added Lata.
And on how he blended his modern rhythms with Lata's old style of singing, Rahman said: "It is not old and new style. The question is whether it works, and in my experience with Lata it worked."
Rahman, whose "Bombay Dreams" was a huge success on the British stage, said he was still in two minds about venturing into Hollywood.
The music director, whose first score in "Roja" fetched him a national film award in 1992, said he has been holding concerts for the past two years as a way to communicate directly with the people. He has so far held shows in Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States.
Rahman said music had the power to change minds in these troubled times. "It (music) can bring people together and create goodwill that can overtake anything and make miracles happen."
In Hyderabad, he said, his concert would be an amalgamation of "Telugu, Hindi, English and Tamil songs". It would feature many popular singers, including S.P. Balasubramanium, Sonu Nigam, Hariharan, Sukhwinder, Sadhana Sargam and Udit Narayan.
Fifty-four musicians, with percussionists, guitarists, keyboard players and playback singers, would enthral the audience from a giant stage at the 30,000-capacity stadium.

A first hand report by A PERSON IN in ARRYG about hyd. concert.
--------------------------------------------------
The Unity of Light concert at Hyderabad was a grand success..The show was simply superb...The stage set and the sound was great!! The show started at around 7:30 PM.. The was compered by Ali khan who seems to be a popular person in the TV circuit..
The show started with some excellent music which slowly fused into "Oruvan Oruvan Mudalali" rendered by SPB...Only the first line was sung in tamil and the rest of the song was sung in telegu.
The next song was the title track of Bombay Dreams..I do not know the name of the person who sang it....he was accompanied by ARR..
Our Man gave an intro speech and hummed a few lines of mustafa mustafa(the words mustafa were replaced by hyderabad!)..
The next number was "Oh Humdum Suniyo re" from Saathiya - sung by Srinivas, Kartik and one more person (the same person who sang Bombay dreams title song earlier)..This song was sung partly in hindi and partly in telugu..
Then there was a small talk by the compere. He then presented Vasundara das.. She along with Sukhwinder Singh sang "Ramta Jogi" - taal

Lata Mangeshksar then sang "O Palanhare" from Lagaan along with Udit Narayan.
The next song was "Khamoshiyaan" from 1 2 ka 4 which was sung by Lata M and Sonu.. Lata Mangeshkar started this song with a very nice Alaap..

Next was "Radha kaise na jale" - Lagaan rendered by Udit Narayan and Sadhana Sargam. This song had a superb intro music by naveen (flute).
Then our man gave a small talk and introduced Rashid Ali (Guitarist). Both of them along with Sivamani performed a Rap version of "Ooh La La La"...which was superb..
Hariharan and Mahalakshmi then sang "Kurukku Chiruthalvalae" - Mudhalvan in telugu.
The next song was "Mitwa" from Lagaan and was rendered by Sukhwinder Singh, Sadhana Sargam and Udit Narayan. This song had some dancers performing..

I do not know the name of the person who performed the rap on stage!!!
Then we came into a small break where the Unity of Light Video clip was played on the big screen...
After the break, ARR and Sukhwinder sang the "Wedding Qawali" from Bombay Dreams..
Then SPB gave a small talk in telegu and was all praise of ARR.. he compared ARR to Sachin...He said "Sachin never speaks...his bat does the talking...in the same way ARR never speaks...his music does all thr talking!!!!!" SPB then rendered "Anjali Anjali" from Duet in telegu along with Gopika Poornima.

The most awaited song was then sung by Our man - "Dil se re" . He sang the last line of the song in telegu...

Our Man then sang "Maa tujhe Salaam"..
The final song was "Ja Na Ga Na" and was sung by all the singers including Lata M.
Overall around 40 songs were performed..The artists who did not show up were Shankar Mahadevan and Sujatha..The concert ended at around 11:30 PM.
The concert was mind boggling...i was in seventh heaven...an event which i shall never forget in my life...the only disappointment i had was that there were no tamil numbers in the concert...especially Vellai Pookal..I hope i am luck enough to attend another ARR concert in future...
Three cheers to OUR MAN!!!
