TFM has seen many artists in singing, composing , playing instrument(s), conducting etc. When we look at their overall contributions and achievements in TFM , i would like you to list and rank the top five (only 5) artists whom you think were the best between the years 1900 - 1999.
Here is a list the top 5 TFM artists , IMO .
1. S P Balasubramanium
This highly prolific singer has exceeded all the expectations and continues to hold strong in TFM .
2. Ilaya Raja
He is the only complete musician TFM has seen who could bring about a seamless coalescence of western and indian.
3. M S Viswanathan
His melodies are so valuble to be preserved for future civilisation as they could symbolize our quality of life in future.
4. P Susheela
This melody queen who has won millions of hearts is an institution in TFM having contributed many chapters.
5. A R Rahman
He has set the stage for the next millenium and is certain to lead his counterparts in the years to come.

Rajendra Chola!
Is PS a runner up, in any list? I am happy that you said she will be in any top 5 list, but when I put my list I had a feeling they all must be at the same level one exceeding the other only in their talents:
Here's what I have to say:
P SUSUEELA WILL BE AN OBVIOUS WINNER IN HER FIELD: WAY AHEAD OF HER CONTEMPORARIES AND PREDECESSORS AND SUCCESSORS.
Her voice is the ONLY voice that is INIMITABLE WITH THE UTMOST CLARITY AND MELODY, THE SWEETEST VOICE EVER TO EXIST, A VOICE THAT HAS MULTIPLE FACETS AND QUALITIES.

They are:
1. MKT
2. G.Ramanathan
3. MSV/TKR
4. Ilaiyaraja
5. A.R.Rehman
All other personalities like singers and Lyricists will be the subset of one of the above.

sk!
`niRam pirithu pArthEn', from Time is sung by Sujatha very nicely. I'm not very sure about the popularity of this song in TN although the other songs of this film are often flashed on sat channels (for e.g. `kAdhal nee dhAnA' is one making waves, another song by Sujatha with UK)!
On the other hand, this song had generally been well acclaimed in all the reviews (including the ones in DF, by Srikanth, MS and others)! Personally too, I rate this a great song, for the classic orchestration and the stunning melody content as well as good singing by Sujatha! I recommend you listen to this song & try singing yourself,if you're at least a bathroom singer (like me:-)! Man, it's a real difficult tune to sing!
others!
Sorry for the digression, let us get on with the top 5... Sujatha may not figure in this list of the century, but in my reckoning, she might figure in the top five of next decade.. She's the most promising female singer now, IMHO!

Can you tell me if niRam pirithu pArthEn is
available on the web in real audio?
I get SUN TV at home. They keep relaying
thavikkiREn (a very good song)
and nenaichapadi (an ok jolly song). They
also showed the movie last week. But since it was
not interesting I only saw it in bits and pieces.
I must have missed niRam piriththu pArththEn.

I located `niRam pirithu' in G Suresh's site (listed in New page for rate hits of IR thread) as the s# 21 under the title `latest hits':-)
Couldn't verify whether it plays, though, due to the reason that I haven't loaded G2 player on my PC:-(

I heard niRam piriththu pArththEn. Yes it's
good. But I wouldn't put it in the class of a similar
slow song like mAlail yArO of Chathriyan. In
niRam piriththu one gets a feeling of
becoming disconnected from the main tune, is it
not? (May be the movie situation demands it.)
Yes Sujatha has sung the song very well.

I always hesitated to express my choices here as I was always inconsistent in my choices(atleast in one or two of them). However after some prolong thoughts (ofcourse velayetha time), I have come with my choices.
No 1: ILLAYRAJA
Never an iota of doubt about this choice. I have nothing new to add what others haven't said so far. He is TFM's Uyir Naadi!! Vazhga Thalaivar!!
No 2: KANNADASAN
TFM's Tamizh Kadavul. When film lyrics were not considered as a product of high artistic quality, KD (and few others) has(ve) been instrumental to prove such critics wrong. Though MGR & SiVAJI (I would vote for the latter) helped him a lot, his contributions to their success cannot be overlooked. Sad that the current lyrics in TFMs are successful in undoing what KD did for TFM.
Here I would like to thank SK and Shrikanth(thru his iv-gold), who keeps his glory alive through their sites.
No 3: P. SUSHEELA/S. JANAKI
This was my most difficult choice. The two singing skylarks have contributed so much to TFM, it is difficult for me to say one is better than the other(Although I give P. Susheela an edge by Nano points). PS ruled TFM till the early 70s when SJ took the reign (though SJ has given wonderful 'Singara velane', 'Indha mandrathil',
'Poojaikku vandha..' when PS was the QUEEN) and ruled it till yesterday. The variety these two have given, is hard for anyone to imitate. Long live the queens!!!
No4: ---None-- (as two No 3s)
No5: MSV/TKR
Unlike No 3, I have no hesitancy in clubbing these two. Sure MSV's era extends till early 80s. But these two together incorporated 'Mellisai' in Film Music and helped common people to enjoy and appreciate music. Great singers like SPB still
consider MSV as the best MD ever lived. TFM listeners would always thank these two, and especially MSV (whose contribution is much more than TKR) for giving such wonderful
compositions.
Though we are limited to 5 artists, I would like to list my rest and they fall in this order.
6. SPB
7. ARR
8. Vaali
9. TMS
10. KJY
11. Vani Jayaram
12. KVM
