Guys,
Please listen to the songs in the following link, and tell me what you feel..I am seriously trying to analyse how anyone can even hate IR...I mean seriously!! (Please select song no.9)
http://www.mail-bag.com/Malayalam.shtml
Please take no offense, I mean, this genius IR needs our support, always bruised and neglected by the very same guys who wee once falling at his feet, I am very sad that he doesn't get the praise that he deserves. He is like a "Vatradha Nadhi", can never run out of tunes, can never run out of marvels. Even his latest "FRIENDS" (both Mallu and Tamil, and mind you, they are totally different!!) was such a treat!!
I was listening to some of his songs at work, to be more specific, his "Friends" in malayalam. This album has 100% class, I was crying in ecstasy!! My colleague cameby, saw me crying, and I had to lie to him..
IR is my Man of the century. Infact, I am not ashamed to admit, I have cried many times listening to his songs..in front of my family while travelling in India this time. I told my brother who was driving, that I would give IR a million dollars if I become a millionaire, it looks like I mean business!! IR's music gives me all the ecstasy I need, I have listened to Yanni, MJ, Huey Lewis and the News, GNR, Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eagles, Mark Knopfler, ABBA, Metallica, Pet Shop Boys, Sting..etc.. but they all, all of them, don't compare to the great Music Maestro.. not even a chance.
I want to know if there are any other IR-Crazy guys like me.
Finally, no offense meant, but any TFM (any music fan infact) who is not an IR fan are fit to pour molten lead into ther useless ears. IMHO.

Rajan,
Thats well put..call me crazy, but if there can be one chiranjeevi in this world, IR should me the man...we need him man..personally, I need him.
By the way, this time in India, I got this chance to meet Vairamuthu..I was talking to him for 30 mins. Contrary to what I expected, he was nice...really really nice!! We were talking some politics...then we switched to music, and I asked him that I really miss the IR-Vairamuthu combo, he said he misses it too, and that he didn't see it happening in the near future.
I asked him who he felt was the best, to which he replied, "Tune Podaradhula Raja Rajadhan..avaru vallavaru, AR Rahman, Harris JAyaraj indha effectsla gettikaranga"..
Anyway, thats an aside...this page is just to discuss your experiences...emotional experiences, friends please feel free to share your emotions when listening to the legend's music..... I personally will feel that we have company.

You're not crazy vimal, I too have felt strong emotions when I listen to certain songs...
...especially those thAlAttu songs with a sad touch make your throat choke...
`thAlAttu mARippOnadhE'
`then pAndicheemayilE' are examples that spring to mind and so is `azhagiya kaNNE'...
The range of emotions created can vary widely from extreme happiness (makes one feel like jumping & flying...songs like madai thiRandhu) to extreme sadness. And he covers the whole spectrum that lies in between...what an artiste...it's not just the sung portions, even the interludes are emotional (listen to the third interlude of `uchi vahundheduththu' as a sample)

ilairaaja's monopoly capability amongst all other M.D'S in indian f.m is the emotional and melodious touch he executes only in a few minutes even for great songs ,let me not mention one since there r umpteen such songs.
MIND YOU SUCH GREAT MEASTRO'S CANNOT BE NEGLECTED OR IT IS NO LOSS TO HIM AND LOSS ONLY TO TFM WHICH CANNOT IDENTIFY 1 GOOD SONG FROM ALL OTHER M.DS THAT COULD LAST IN OUR MIND FOR JUST 1 MONTH WHILE WE LIVE WITH ALL THOSE OLD SONGS OF IR TILL DATE

I know this probably sounds abit pansy, but when I was a like form 2 I saw "Thevar maghan" I didn't think much of the music.
few years back I listened to an original soundtrack of the same movie and the sad version of "Potri Paadadi penne" totally got to me,
the song starts off with just 2 voices unaccompanied, and suddenly the mail voice stops and then there is this haunting vocal chorus that begins to sing, and it builds up and up...
a magnificant opus, yet such a small piece.
I know it's cliche but words cannot express such a feeling.

i have also this experience. when i hear the song 'amuthae thamizhae' i always feel like crying. the music, the lyric, nicely expresses thamizhpatru.
many times i felt peace of mind. the latest eg. is nirpathuvae nadappathuvae.
no one is near to ir in this display of emotions.

I cry hearing IR's amma sentiment songs (most from ramarajan movies). Especially Onna pola atha, en thayenum kovilai and wife sentiment song from En rasavin manasile (solai pasunkiliye).
The song which elevates me always are - madai thirandhu, malayil yaro manadhodu pesa, nan thedum sevvanthi poovidhu, ooroma athupakkam, etc.

The word genius sums up Ilaiyaraaja. I was in 6th class or so, when "Apoorva Sagothargal" was released in telugu. I cried in the hall in the scene when little Kamal is dumped by Rohini due to misunderstanding and SriVidya calls Kamal a midget. The music was so heart rending, I could never forget it. I have lost interest in movies ever since Raaja stopped giving music in Telugu. The thrill of watching an Ilaiyaraaja movie is out of the world experience. I am a great fan of Kamal , but I am in anticipation of his movies if they do not have music by Raaja. I hope that he will return to Telugu and rekindle the old days and memories.

Dudes,
Whatever you guys say is true. But the word "Emotion" has different shades...not only sadness. For example, I listen to IR's songs using the real layer even during work, and I get pullarichified..trust me, I listen to less of his sad numbers.
His orchestration or the flute and violin mix take as engeyo... and his charanams are too good to match by words. Offlate I am getting addicted to his mallu numbers... they are all packed with class and joy....
Please write about happy emotions too....like what you think of when you listen to some song...like in my case, the song "Pon Veyilile" from Yathramozhi is too god, the orchstration and interludes..and the backing vocals..they all blind so well.
Or in the song "Vegam Vegam" from Anjali, if oyu observe the second interlude, the violin just leads to the charanam as smooth as butter, and in the charanam..you have this WAVE of violins in the background...man..I could die happily if that song is playing... atleast my mind will be in heaven!! I play the song very loud in my car, with the windows open and drive in my university town. "Yam Petra Inbham Peruga Ivvayaam!!"

One of the things that many people dont seem to appreciate in IR's songs is that - it is not really a song in the traditional sense. There is no percussion playing throught out the song. IMO, it is easier to stop singing and let the instruments play it out while the percussion accompaniment is there continuously. But this is not the case with many of IRs songs..the song transitions to totally percussion-less pure melodic interlude (almost WCM) and again transitions back to the singer with percussion for good tAlam accompaniment. These transitions are IMHO, difficult to pull of musically. You need quite a bit of skill.
Recently, there is a melodious but fast song in kutti. The first interlude really picks up the rhythm with just strings and then you go into one of those fantastic interludes and again you are back into the song..
Not many new MDs would want to venture into this kind of song structure. I guess, inorder to be in the top of the charts, it is easier to maintain rhythm with percussion and play it safe. This I think, is soon going to be a lost art.
(BTW, new MD in Hindi Ismail Darbar does these kinds of interludes)

Hi all
I am too a great fan of IR. I believe he is one MD who can write down the entire musical notes of any song for all the instruments in one sitting. He can visualise a song as a whole. And what about his BGMs. Emotions, feelings - they convey all. Par excellence. I totally agree with you all.
