Lyrics - The Golden 70s

The 70s is a special period for me and holds a special place in my heart. Unfortunately it is a period overlooked by many people and we hardly hear songs from this period nowadays.

Whenever, I have the time, I would like to share the lyrics of some of my favourites and have discussions of this period.

  Great to see this thread. Though I spent my first 21 yrs in TN, i hardly knew any of tamil culture/songs/etc as i did all my schooling in a non tamil environment. after moving to bombay 2 yrs back for work, i started delving into tamil film music and discovered the treasures of IR/MSV for the past one year only(this only testifies to their greatness!) I was looking for the lyrics for "Samsaaram enbathu veenai" for a loooooooooong time..i go to TN once a year only and just this week I am back from there.. and I got the lyrics in this thread!!
  Sorry for putting the sontha-kathai-soga-kathai stuff here. I guess 70s music strikes a sentimental chord in our hearts since it was the time most of us were born, and as pre-KG kids we would have parroted out those songs!! Also thinking of the picturisation of songs like Deivam Thantha Veedu and Kadavul Amaithu Vaitha Medai may remind us of our Thatha's house or Maama's house!

  Now, here is a song from the movie Sathuranga. Vaali writes while SP Bala and Vani Jeyram sing. This song was the recent inspiration for "Azhagoviyam uyiraanatho."

  Incidentally, there are a few other factors in this song (apart from the lyrics) that make it so memorable. One would be Janaki's soulful singing. After the lines "gokulathil oru kuzhanthai piranthathamma", she gives a small pause and whispers "Thoonga maatte ?". That was wonderful. The other noteworthy aspect of this song is the excellent usage of flute. There are long soothing moments of flute...

  Well, flute also reminds me of... "Chinna kannan azhaikkiraan" from Kavikkuyil. The heroine challenges the hero to find out her favourite tune, which only she knows. And the hero comes up trumps with this song..

  vgs, you seem to be in a roll. lemme give you some company here.
  personally, I'm not much of a lyrics guy. I was brought up in the carnatic mould, singing swarams most of the time and saahityams in telugu. in any song, I don't really watch out for the lyrics. of course, no one can ignore the power of kannadasan's or pattukottai kalyanasundaram's lyrics.
  I'm trying to listen to the lyrics more these days.
