Scarcity of Tamil Singers in Tamil Film Industry ?

All times in EST +10:30 for IST.

We have very few famous Tamil singers in Tamil Film Industy from Thiyagaraja Bhagavathar time.

TMS (his mother tongue is Sowrashtra),PB Srinivas (Kannada).

Balamuralikrishna, SPB, Janaki, Susheela, SP Sailaja, Mano, Devan (Telugu).

KJ Yesudas, Jeyachandran, Chitra, Unnikrishnan, Unnimenon, Jency,Swarnalatha, Minmini,Sujatha, Chinmayi, Chitra Sivaraman (Tenali) - Malayalam.
(I may miss some names)

Atleast this time we have some Tamilsingers Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik, Tippu, Harini, Srinivas,Harish Ragavendra etc.

What is the reason for other language singers dominating the Tamil film Industy. It is not so in Telugu or Malayalam film Industy. (Of course Hindi it is very difficult to predict who is from where).

Atleast now there are some Tamil singers. Will it continue ?

  I listened to Julie Ganapathy songs two days ago. The tunes are vintage IR stuff, perfect for a BM film. But why did IR choose Shreya Ghosal?
  Market pressure?
  Novelty craze?
  Lack of better tamizh singers?
  Or just a whim?
  Two fine solos, would have been raised to the level of immortality, if only one could undertand what she was singing in the charanams. Such a waste.

  shreya's songs r da best in julie ganapathy. she has great voice and good tamil pronunciation. u peepil r jealous coz she is kicking out your rats and zombies. but u wait n watch. shreya will be no.1 singer in south india in less than a year from now.

  Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan, Tippu, Harini, Srinivas are all from Palakkad of kerala. They have that mallu-tamil mix of accent.
  
  Fyi, Uma ramanan too hails from Palakkad.

  Hindi Music directors are not giving this much chance to South Indian Singers.
  
  If somebody sung like Udit Narayan in Hindi, media will tear like anything.
  
  Anurdha sriram is singing occasionaly. You can count them easily. They will never enterain us except ARR and Heroine.

  If Rajasthani, Marathi, Punjabi and Nepali and Malayalee singers are the top in tamil/telegu film music then it tells us a lot about how open, accepting, tolerant and accomodating Tamil/Telegu people and cultures are.
  I mean, shouldn't the ability to put up with consistent abuse of one's language, traditions, sounds, speech and nativity be seen as a sign of collective strength?
  Here's how we can share and spread this message of pride thru' official slogans on vehicle license plates:
  
  TN: Dump on Us, We can Take it.
  AP: Dump on Us, We can Take it 2.

  Most humorous post of the day! Couldn't help laughing looking at the prospective licence plate designs.
  
  Today, there is practically no film that gets released in telugu without an Udit Narayan song in it. He is probably singing more songs down south than in bollywood. He sure is talented, but there is no justification, whatsoever, in accepting and accommodating his abuse of the language, be it because of the laxness on the part of the MD, lyricist, producer, director or the singer himself.
  
  To be fair, I have to admit that UN has improved quite a bit (atleast in telugu), but it is far from being a replacement of a native telugu/tamil singer.

  Re: UditNarayan, it is ridiculous that he is even allowed to sing in Tamil. One should at least learn the language in which one is singing/earning. Who is to be blamed, the singer or the MD/producer? I guess all are at fault, and the Tamil people for tolerating such pronunciations and making the songs a success.

  nowadays,pronouncing tamil so called stylishly has become a fashion. noth-indian singers like sadhna sargam,shreya kaushal,udit,.. are no extra-ordinary than our anuradha sriram,chinmayi,...
  the north indian singers do pronounce tamil badly that irritates us many time. may be there's something called "raasi" which the industry believes.many of sadhna's songs like konjum mainakkale,july malargale,.. shows the don't care tendency of both the singer & the music director regarding the lyrics. unless this changes people like me has to suffer with such singers.

  2. Anuradha Sriram
  3. Shankar Mahadevan

  5. Chitra (she got whole MPKDH package)

  I think this is a meaningless thread. TMS' family has been in Tamil Nadu for centuries now. Are we going to deny his tamilhood? SJanaki has lived in TN since her age of 8. SPB and P Susila have been in TN since teens. Why must we see them as non tamils. If we are so concerened about blue-blooded tamils, why not say all telugu, kannada & Malayalam speakers as tamils as they were tamils couple of milleniums ago? There is not much to find fault about TMS, SJ, Suseela etc. Udit Narayan's tamil pronunciation is a different case.
