Ravi: Thanks for your prompt response. With your suggestion, I am starting this new thread.
Hi Friends,
I'm Nirupama from Vancouver, Canada. Since I visit this site quite often and have found out your passion for tamil film music, I thought this bit of information will be interesting for you.
With a help of a friend who hosts a hindi show on radio, I started my own radio show for tamil film music. Since there are no other tamil radio shows in Vancouver, I thought tamils living here might appreciate this. But to my surprise, I received many calls from non-tamils(White Canadians, etc) inquiring about this strange yet wonderful eastern(or fusion, rather) music. The show is only three-weeks old, and every week I've been getting these phone calls. I've described this type of music to the best of my abilities, but still their curiosity is overwhelming.
Some of their comments in their own words are:
"Hey, I love this music! What is it called?" , "This is great! Where is it from?" , "I like traditional Indian music, but what you're playing sounds very interesting!" Some even asked me for the film and song names.
In order to find out more about their music preferences, I tried playing songs from different periods, styles etc. What do guys think about this? Any guesses on whose music style or what type of tamil film music they like?? I'll talk more about that later.....
Nirupama

Thanks guys for the info. on Ravindran ( the same MD who scored for BR's "Vedham Puthithu", right?).
Cram:
Enna neenga ippidi solliteenga? I don't deserve all this praise, yaar! It should actually go to the respective MDs & singers. I'm just playing my favourite music and am glad that others are taking notice of it, too. Thanks anyway!!
The Fan:
I'm sure India 24 hrs. is fantastic, but I don't have any of these instrumental albums with me. I was actually planning on playing some instrumental 'theme' pieces from TFM (eg. Punnagai Mannan, Bombay). Let's see how it goes..

The MD for Vedham Pudhidhu is Devendran. I think he is different from Ravindran aka SangeedhaRajan.

Ravy ,
You are 100% right. Devendran is different from Ravindran.

No, I haven't heard anything about this guy, Tamil priyan, is it? A person named 'Sree' is doing a show here but it's not really focused on music.
Ravy & Murali:
Thanks for the info. Did Devendran also score music for "Mannukkul Vairam", a film starring Rajesh, Murali & Ranjini?

Where are you? Care to give us an update?

Hi Udhaya,
How are you doing? I've been away in India for over a month. That's one of the reasons for not updating this thread. I remember a British listener telling me how much he's going to miss this music when I leave the show. Although some of these guys don't call me regularly, it's really heartening to learn that they're listening and enjoying TFM.
During my stay in Madras, I had the wonderful opportunity of meeting some of our female playback singers. I visited S. Janaki, Chitra, and Vani Jayaram. I also had a brief telephone conversation with Bhavadharini. Last week on my show I had a special on "S. Janaki", where I included parts of our conversation.

Hey Nirupama....
How are you? I didn't even think you checked out this site anymore. Or Lankathas or anyone from before! Anyhow, happy to see that someone got a worthwhile vacation. So how was your meetings with these singers. Do you think you will be able to put a posting of your meetings when you have some free time?

Nirupama: We missed you a lot here, You are like Geetha making much more 'real' contributions here than some of us, like me!!!
Please tell us more about your meetings with the legendary singers. What is IR upto? Have you listened to any of his recent outputs? Don't miss out Ponnu Veettukkaran and Anthapuram (Telugu). Top albums of the decades
Watiting anxiously..........

When you said 'included parts of our conversation' do you mean as in telling the listeners what you talked about or do you have an audio tape that you recorded the conversations on. If so... then....can you please put it on some site for the rest of us?
waiting...waiting...waiting...:-))

Nirupama,
Its really great to hear that non-tamils, non-indians like tamil songs. I am sure they would be liking IR numbers very much (pls, pls, don't start a IR Vs ARR here).
I am in California bay area. I wonder if I can listen to your programs. On which frequency (I believe it is FM), on which days which timings and how long I can hear them. Which number should I call for requesting songs. Do you have all those old songs, esp IR's?

Hi Aruvi:
I've been a little busy lately. Besides I didn't know how many people were really interested in this thread. Yes I did record the whole interview of S. Janaki & Chitra, but unfortunately I'm quite illiterate when it comes to computers. Therefore, I won't be able to give them in the realaudio format. What I can do is give you a summary of these two interviews. Do you think I should open up a new thread for this or not?
Murali:
Don't worry, this thread will not trigger any such disputes. I'm not sure if this station is on the internet already. I'll check that out soon.

I am relatively new to this DF. After seeing it today, I went thru the whole thread from the beginning. What a pleasant surprise to know all these! Great work! Carry on ur great work!!
Recently they have started a similar TFM program in San Fransisco station. It comes on every Tuesday 6am-9am. Bay area guys watch out at frequency, err..., sorry I forgot. I will let u guys know soon. It is run by some Sri Lankan guy. I heard it one week. It was cool! But the thing is it comes on a Tuesday morning, during the rush hour. I am really sorry that I forgot the frequency. I will let u know soon.

Nirupama,
Good to see your response. There are definitely quite a few people here who would love to keep up with your unique programs and this thread, so don't lose touch for long. Keep us informed. You can go ahead and give the interview information right here, no need to start a new thread for that.
Muralidharan,
Can you please let me know the SF radio station's frequency? I live in San Jose and would love to access that station.

Yeah Nirupama
I agree with what Udhaya says. Although, do you think that you can get some friend of yours to put the interviews up on a later date, when you are of course, not to busy. I would love to hear the voices of these two ladie's when they are talking.

Udhaya:

Thanks guys for your support! I consider myself very lucky to have met these wonderful people within a short period of time I spent in Madras.
The first call I made was to Isaignani Ilayarajah's place. I was hoping to get a interview with Karthik Raja. Instead I got a chance to talk with his sister, Bhavadharini. I didn't realize it was her until after the first 2 min. into our conversation. She informed me that KR was in the States at that time. After that I asked a few questions regarding her father's & brothers' latest releases. Her answers were very brief and also very vague. She said something like she wasn't quite sure what they're working on at the moment. She mentioned that 'Poovellam Kettuppar' has been released. She had no idea about IR's private album or about KR's plans/projects. She sounded very polite & nice, though. I just don't know why she's so hesitant in answering some of the questions.

Murali:
You can only listen to this station in British Columbia, Canada. They do have a website for this, but without the realaudio facilities.
To All:
Thanks for your patience!! Here's what S. Janaki had to say about her career in film music.
(BTW, her speaking voice sounds exactly like the voice you hear during 'Kanmani anbodu' song from Guna. She has the same irresistable laugh & giggle while she speaks:-)) I found her to be a very friendly, simple, humble & honest person. I felt right at home while talking to her and almost forgot that I was talking to the S. JANAKI of TFM. At first, when she asked me to sing, I simply refused. But minutes later, I found myself singing with her to the tunes of "Inji Iduppazhaga" & "Annakili unnai theduthe". Let me tell you that not only she sounds fantastic in the Annakili song, I think she even sounds better than the original recording. O.K, so I started off by asking her why she has reduced her singing in TFM.
** " My interest in film music is slowly declining. I am now focusing more on devotionals & other private albums. My health is also deteriorating. I went through a major operation in States only a few months back, and still I don't see much of any improvement. I've been going through some severe breathing difficulties right from age 36. But I would love to sing till the day I die. That 's my only wish".
SJ also told me that she has been awarded the 'Nandhi' award (is it the Andra State award?) for 1998 for best female playback singer. She said she started singing in 1957. During this period of 42 years she has sung about 14,000 songs in all languages including Hindi & Sinhalese. She says that this is not an achievement at all since singers like SPB has sung 30,000 songs over 30 years. Her house is filled with various kinds of awards & certificates. There is more, she says, in store rooms and other spare rooms.
