I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

Kannan,your report sourced from Sify.com,itself says that 'Virumandi' is making money.Then what's your problem.Money is not lost,It gets fantastic reviews from everywhere&so kamal has achieved something.It's anyday better to make a 'Virumandi' than 'Dhool'.Also at 50,i don't think Kamal needs to prove his boxoffice clout.He has seen it all over the last 30years.It's stupid to compare his films now with that of Vikram&Dhanush.He is on a different track altogether&if you are a lover of good cinema,just go watch the movie&hope he continues on the same track.Otherwise don't come here trying to pull kamal down.You are only pulling yourself down in the process.

Kamal never had any box office clout. Only his good movies run....his average movies don't become hits. Every one knows that. It was in fact very sad to see his status...as he has got to the stage that if his movies break even that it self is a big news and relief since his movies are having big problems at the box office lately (refer to Moviebuzz report card above). Trust me, Virumandi is not released in the theatres in Sydney. I can understand if a Vijayakanth film doesn't get released in Sydney because that is not his market...but Kamal seems to be even losing grounds big time in the so called 'A' centres...which has been his only strength. Times have changed....the talk is about Vikram & Surya and the expectation is for "ARUL" and Maniratnam's Surya starrer. Kamal and Rajani are not MGR and Sivaji...they can't keep on going like them at the top. You will reject or ignore this comment at your own peril! As I said before, REALITY WILL STRIKE SOON!

If Kamal had not box office clout
what about these sample movies?
Guru, Sakalakalavallavan, Thoongathey thambi thoongathey, Thevar magan, Aboorva sagotharargall, Kakkichattai, avvaishanmugi, Indian, Sathya..
The above are just a few samples. Infact, there was time when Sakalakalavallan held the record for the maximum collection for a long period of time (It passed the collection of "Ulagam suttrum Valiban").
He was a mass hero with lots of movies doing great in Box office. If not he would have been thrown out by the distributors and the producers.
He would not have come this far.
His Box office success ratio is probably less when compared to Rajini whose movies are always aimed at the massess.

Please be precise in what you are saying. FYI, Guru & Sathya were not hits...they were very average at the box office. But...that is precisely what I am saying. The rest were good movies and no wonder they became hits. But, his average films don't become hits. No doubt, Sakalakalavallavan was a record breaker...but again you are not accurate. It's collection record was broken by "Mundanai Mudichchu" very soon. And, Ulagam Suttrum Vaaliban's record was long surpassed by "Thirisoolam"...the collection of this movie made the central government revamp the tax system for collection revenue.
FYI...Kamal's biggest commercial hits were
- Kalyanaraman
- Sakalakalavallavan
- Apoorva
- Thevar magan
- Kakkichattai
- Vaalvey Mayam
- Thoongathey.....
- Indian & Avvai (may be a notch down)
ps. I should note here that Guru was a big hit in SriLanka....and personally I too thought it was a clean and well made entertainer.

the reason that MGR and SIvaji went so long Kannan from Sydney cuz there was pretty much no one else that was acting realli. Same with rajini kamal period now if you look there are so many choices. this is simple economics

Piratheepan,
that was not correct. Sivaji and MGR had Jai Shankar, Ravichandran, Gemini Ganesan and so on. Similarly, Rajini and Kamal had V.Kanth, Satyaraaj and so on. In spite of competition, they had something special to withstand other actors.

While cinema is meant for box-office and necessary for it's survival, it is also as much an art form. If one is able to achieve the right balance -- that could be seen as a success. Only a few have been able to acheive it.
Take for e.g. K,Balachander. All his films were different and while most of them made money, may not be as much as possibly a MGR film. May be, K,Balachander does NOT want to compromise on the artistic nature of his films, for the sake of better box-office returns. He is happy with the money he made with his films, the way he "wants" to make it, without his films losing Quality.
I have a feeling that today's audience, being fed with 'Metti Oli's, may hv lost the a bit of appreciation for 'better' film. I don't think films like "Uthiri Pookkal" in today's times. These kinds of films were GOOD hits during their time. Not bemoaning today's audience. Just the change of times, due to TV encroaching people's entertainment avenues, & general decline in people's taste of good films by seeing 'Metti Oli's and 'Chitthi's (melodramas).
Personally, I don't want Kamal to do films like Gemini, Dhool and be declared as box-office great. I would like him to do films like 'Virumaandi' , even if they just break-even.
Hopefully, better films will get recognition atleast in future..

Kannan,
What is your problem? What is that you find wrong in Kamal? What is wrong about Virumandi? Why do you feel it shouldn't be a hit at the box office?Can you just sum it up once?
The Matrix,Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions put together left me with lesser questions! :-)

virumandi is good compared with other recent releases the 1st half was superb kamal has introduced new type of screenplay in 1st half we should appreciate him.
hats off to kamal for giving new cinema to india

This Kannan dude says that only kamal's 'good movies' become hits, then he goes on to list Kalyaanaraman and Sahalakalavallavan among kamal's greatest hits.
So is he saying these two movies are kamal's best 'good' movies? Oh my gawd. Even Kamal himself will be embarassed.
The funniest thing is Kannan thinks Kamal never had box office clout. Isn't it amazing Kamal had maintained or improved upon his position in the industry for over 25 years, while not having box office clout? Man, that's got to be some sort of record.
What's more, his every move is followed and reported by the media. I mean, not even some actors with box office clout get that.
I hope Kannan can unleash this 'reality' thingy soon enoguh. I can't wait for it to strike me.

Another 'all positive' review.
The part about Raja's music after Nallamanaicker's death is an astute observation.

Hello Kannan sir, if u talk about Kamal just talk about him.Y u pull Rajini into that.Please look at the history.Kamal and Rajini have given more hits than Sivaji and MGR.Former movies are big grossers than the latter.Don't just blindly give statements like this.Vikram and Surya are like Vijay and Ajith two years ago.Who knows tomorrow simbhu and thanush may steal the show.So don't weigh the abilities by the success of few movies.

Some general equations from this thread.
Bad box office = Bad film
Good box office = good film
Good box office Never= Bad film
Good film Never= Good box office
Some kamal equations
Kamal film = Good film
Kamal film never= Bad film
Kamal film = Bad box office
Kamal film never= Good box office
Kamal film > rest of the film
Kamal box office Rest of the good film
Kamal good film > kamal film
Kamal = Kamal
Kamal never= Anyone
kamal < not yet born
Virumandi equations
Virumandi = Good film
Virumandi = Good box office
Virumandi = Kamal
Virumandi = bad box office
Subsituting the variables in the equation we get:
Virumandi = Kamal's good film which will not be good at box office and so it is Kamal's film :)
I can only say and think Kamal = Kamal.
Sorry for wasting your time.

Whats with the new kind of screenplay thing? Nagesh kukunoor did that in his recent Theen Dewarein. In fact in that movie the premise is the same. Someone interviews convicts in prison and they tell their stories. The same incidents are told in a different light in each version.
