TFM boasts of several contemporary poets like Bharadhidhasan, Pattukkottai Kalyanasundaram, Kannadhasan and Vali (Version I) who penned several songs dealing with social issues such as work ethic (uzhaippu), labor rights, women's position in society, religion, caste, patriotism/ nationalism, money/power/greed and the such. In addition, non-film kavidhaigaL from Bharadhi and Bharadhidhasan have been included in TFM to heighten social awareness.
Let's go ahead and discuss some of these songs--old and new--which address some key social issues even as they were entertaining the masses in the context of the movie situation. Please elaborate on the lyrics and your thoughts on the same as your time would allow.

Manisekaran:
Thanks for the clarifications on paattum naanE.
I had no idea that there was so much background reg the
authorship of this song. My source for the story is:
Vairamuththu varai by Dr. Su. Kalyanasundaram (Second Edn, 1996).
While discussing Ka.Mu.Sheriff, the author writes...
'paattum naanE bhaavamum naanE' endra ivaradhu
paadal 'ThiruviLayaadal' padaththil Kannadhasan
peyaril vandhadhu. idhaRkku APN-in thiruviLayaadaldhaan
kaaraNamaam. idhanaip patri ivaridam kEtta pOdhu,
"kEtpadhaRkku nandraagaththaanE irukkiRadhu"
endraaraam. avvaLavu perundhanmai ivarukku.
'Siva Leela'-vukku ivar ezhudhiya paadalgaLaiththaan
'ThiruviLayaadal', 'Thiruvarutchelvar' pOndra
padangaLukku payan paduththinar.
I have written this just to give clarity to my
source. Obviously, even the author didn't know
much about any controversy because he would have
mentioned it in detail if he had known that.
Since you have much more knowledge about this
controversy and even had personal interaction with
the kavinjar involved, I am sure that what you've
said, that is, Kannadhasan indeed wrote 'paattum
naanE', is very true.

It is amazing to note that there are (were) sooo many songs in TFM
with nice samudhaaya karuththugaL. But onething makes me feel
a bit sad... how come I didn't know much about these songs before? Clearly
many of these songs never became very popular! My feeling is that
MDs didn't put as much care to the tunes for these kinds of songs as
compared to the effort they put into kaadhal songs, for example.
But some of the songs mentioned above did make an impact on me in my
school days.
chinnappayalE chinnappayalE sEthi kELadaa is definitely one.
The charaNam that starts as vEppamara uchchiyilE... made a
deep mark in the mind; the tune and the tone with which TMS sings it
were certainly reasons for that, apart from the simple and powerful
lyrics.
A kutti digression... When my brother Bones took up his first job
and got his first pay, he didn't send any money to our parents. So
our mother wrote to him... ennadaa? mudhal pay kidachchavudan nee
Amma Appa-vukku konjam paNam anuppiyirundhaa engaLukku romba romba
magizhchchiyaaga irundhirukkumE? Bones wrote back, aptly citing
PKS's lines...
aaLum vaLaraNum aRivum vaLaraNum athuthaaNdaa vaLarchchi
aasaiyOdu eendravaLukku athuvE nee tharum makizhchchi
adhudhaan ungaLukku magizhchchiyai koduththuttEnE? paNam avasiyamaa?
There is a nice song in the movie Chakkaravarththi ThirumagaL
by Seerkaazhi (sings for MGR) and NSK (for himself) where there is a
question-answer pOtti between MGR and NSK to win the hand of the
princess. I do not even remember the starting lines of this song;
but I was impressed with the song as a little boy... it conveyed
useful thoughts amidst nice laughter. A part of it that I never
forget..
Seerkaazhi:
ulagaththilE bayangaramaana aayudham edhu?
NSK:
kaththi
Seerkaazhi:
illai
NSK:
kOdaali
Seerkaazhi:
illai.
ulagaththilE bayangaramaana aayudham edhu?
nilayatrup pOna naya vanjagarin naakkudhaan adhu.
Another song that I remember vividly is paappaa paattu paadiya
Bharathi naandhaanE from 'Iru KodugaL'. This is a mEdaip paattu
in which Nagesh comes as the Mahaa Kavi. The kavi's statue is standing
in the usually gambeera stature on the seashore. There are people
going around the statue misusing the great kavi's songs. Tortured
by this, the kavi's statue comes alive and conveys to the people
the real intended meaning in those songs. A very very nice idea
crafted out by KBalachander and executed by the team.. VKumar, TMS
and Nagesh.

Bhaskar:
koduththadhellaam koduththaan is from
PadagOtti; lyrics: Vaali, MDs: MSV/TKR.
Vaali writes the following story in his AB.
When he was running around to various MDs trying
to get a chance to enter TFM, his friend
VGopalakrishnan (actor) took him to MBSrinivasan
who was doing the music for Paadhai Theriyudhu
Paar at that time. MBS asked Vaali to write
a song about social awareness. Vaali penned one
right away. MBS was unimpressed and politely told
Vaali to seek a chance somewhere else. After many
years, when Vaali became famous, he used the same
song... koduththadhellaam koduththaan in
PadagOtti; it became a BIG hit.
Another song in the same movie which nicely
describes difficulties faced by fishermen:
tharai mEl piRakka vaiththaan - engaLai
thaNNeeril pizhaikka vaiththaan
karaimEl irukka vaiththaan - peNgaLai
kaNNeeril kuLikka vaiththaan
Budhdhan Esu is from ChandhrOdhayam; lyrics:
Vaali, MD: MSV.

Sathya:
enna ivvaLavu late-aa ingE vandhirukkeenga?! Good to see you! As per your comment on backing up, I think you need to back up 9 or more pages in the old responses to get to the top.
What are the songs PKS wrote for "pAdhai theriyudhu pAr"? I remember Manisekaran saying this is a major samudhAyap puratchi movie. The only songs I know are thennangeetRu oonjalilE and chinna chinna mookkuththiyAm, both of which are romantic duets. Naturally, I'm curious about the songs with the social message.
PKS definitely seems to be in a league by himself. But, here is my personal observation: somehow, besides the thoughts themselves, I expected more passion also from PKS's works based on his reputation of being a "samudhAyap puratchik kavignar".
indha thread-in Arambaththil pEsiya Bharadhiyin pAdalgaLil nam nenjaich chudum neruppu uNdu. adhE neruppu PKS pAdalgaLilum irukkum endRu edhirpArththEn; illai (ennaip poruththa mattum).
May be my evaluation is wrong or the comparison itself is fundamentally unfair for obvious reasons.
I'm hoping we can continue the analysis of Pattukkottaiyaar's contributions, and also shed some light on the contributions of Ka.Mu. Sheriff and the thamizharasuk kazhagam, both referenced by Manisekaran.
One other question: who were all the lyricists who were associated with the Dravida Kazhaga movement whose purported objective was to make the society more progressive? Also, did M.Karunanidhi, C.N.Annadurai et al ever write lyrics, or did they restrict themselves to screenplay/dialog?
To sum, what was the socio-political scene in those days which led to such prolific socially-aware TFM, who were the major players, and how did it all fit together in the big picture?
(More interested in getting a good background here rather than the politics per se, obviously.)
