I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Saravanan -
A little prompt (after a few days of patience, which doesn't really look too good on me :-)) and there you are with another detailed write-up that takes us from Mrichakatikam (did you see Girish Karnad's Utasav, based on this place? It has some breathtaking songs - particularly "Shaam Dhale" by Suresh Wadkar and "Man Kyon Behka Re Behka Aadhi Raat Ko - by LM and AB.) right down to Mangudi Minor! Such a sweep in your coverage, and so much to savour and celebrate!
It is through your writings that I have discovered many VJ songs (songs that I had attributed to others or did not know) and have been sent back to the website (GB ND!) to listen to them all over again, my memory refreshed by your lucid notes.
CB and SG were perhaps the most consistent in their collaboration with VJ in the 80s. VJ sang for CB for his first film and it was a partnership that lasted over many years. Pressured by current trends, SG sought out other singers in the nadir of their career, but CB (and MSV with Patththini Penn) stood by VJ and gave her some of his best songs, right upto Pudhiya Padhai. I hope you coverage, in the coming weeks, will include elaborations on many a neglected song. I'll be happy to prompt again (look what we all beget when I do! :-))
Thanks, Saravanan!

Saravanan,
In the same interview (Kumudam???), Director Durai had said he was happy running a restaurant. "indha businessla, at least, pOtta paisa udanE kidachchidudhu! kaiyila kaasu vaayila dOsai!". Of course, the transformation must have really pained him

Vani's "Kannil Poovu" from the film Vishukanni has been recently added on MIO. Its a sweet song with a refreshingly different tune. Very very Salil-esque. I truly admire the way Salilda would re-use his tunes across different languages. His critics allege that he did this as he "fell short of stuff". Au contraire, he had the rare ability to use the same tune for two different and often even contrasting moods. And yes, he re-used his tunes quite often across languages, from Hindi to Bengali to Malayalam to Oriya to Marathi and vice-versa.
The song "Kannil Poovu" is a re-make of a lovely Bengali "Adhunik Geet" - "Jhhilik Jhhilik" composed by Salilda himself. The PS solo from the same film is also a remake of another such Bengali song "Keno kichhu katha balo na...".
Vani sounds really nice in the song. Please have a listen.

Thanks for the recommendation. I did listen to the song. In one word: Delightful.

Av,
The PS song is 'neeyum vithavayO nilavE' with great violin counters, tune et all. A melancholic tune . The Hindi version was sung by Kishore 'moujOn kI dolI chali rE' a very upbeat kind of a number with totally different arrangement. Thanks for reminding me of the song. Sorry for the digression folks.

Thanks, Naaz and Kaumudi!
Naaz, the delay in the chronology was not intentional, I assure you. Its just that pressure at work doesn’t seem to relent at all.
Yes, I have seen Utsav- a good effort. Excellent songs!
Btw, could you listen to the Mangudi Minor song? It was my first attempt at becoming a little techno savvy, thanks to sk.
C V- Thanks for that extra bit on Durai. I was suspecting that Maria My Darling-1980 was also by Durai, but wasn’t sure. OISG has confirmed that it was indeed by Durai.
Av- Thanks for the link. That song was featured in Sangeetha Sagaram some time back.

No pressure, just eagerness. I know that work always gets in the way, but I also know that you have to make time for PLAY. Let the chronology continue, at pace, without haste! :-)
Innikku Sangeetha Sagaram unda? I believe it should be the final episode of the VJ focus...?
And BTW, is the programme conducted in malayalam, through and through?

Forgot to add:
A participant in the VJ egroup has uploaded a semi-classical song in the Files section. "Karuna Cheivan Nindhu" from Gaanam (malayalam) is yet another example of VJs perfection in a language not her own. Give it a listen if you haven't already. And if you have, give it a listen again - it will reward you abundantly.
(superb use of chendai, and a typical "malayala mann" vasanai pervades the song. Sitting at your desk, the song makes you feel like you are walking around a temple somewhere in Trishur or Guruvayoor.)

Was Maria, My Darling the film that languished in the cans for a long long time - A Kamalhaasan / Sumalatha
dullard?
And the Mangudi Minor song...Is it available at the VJ website?

Racap of this week’s Sangeetha Sagaram:
All good things must come to an end, and today was the last part of Vani’s tryst with Asianet’s Sangeetha Sagaram—
When I tuned in, VJ was speaking about a classical album composed by her, with her own lyrics in Tamizh, with Ghatam by Vinayagam and Violin by Usha Rajagopal.
She then added that she has written a lot in Tamizh- both poetry and songs. She added the famed violinist Chandrashekhar had used one of her compositions for a recital.
She sang one of her own compositions- ‘a unique 4 note creation- a song that has only sa ga da ma’ –the lovely bhakthi soaked song goes ‘Kanda Guha endru kaliyuga deivathai karaindhu azhaithaal kaatchi tharuvaan’- the song had some really intricate swara passages- only with those 4 notes-and Vani’s singing made one filled with devotional fervour.
Her next offering was another of her own compositions, set to Varali ragam, she said. ‘Niyayamaa niyayamaa ithu niyayamaa, indha ezhaikku innum darisanam tharaadhadhu niyaayamaa ithu niyaayamaa---’ goes this one, again on Lord Muruga. The breathtaking heights scaled in the line ‘Ezhu pirappilum nee thaan thunai ena ennidum ennai emaatruvathu’ had me in rapture. KC looked dazed and said in awe ‘You are indeed a multi-faceted person’!
KC reminded VJ of Fasil’s landmark film Manjil Virija Pookal- 1980, stg. Shankar, Mohanlal & Poornima Jairam, and spoke about its music composer Jerry Amaldev, who had learned music in the U.S. Vani smiled in recall and said that Jerry had RD Burmanish western flourishes and came out with “beautiful orchestrations”. “A very nice person” she added.
She sang a few lines from a famous song from the film- it goes ‘Manjaadi kunnil mani mudi’. Another catchy Jerry Amaldev’s song that KC reminded her was ‘ Konjam chilange konjam chilange’. Incredible it may sound, Vani could recall even the place where that song was recorded so many years back- ‘AVM C’ she said with a smile- KC was speechless!
Vani then spoke of another talented composer AT Umar. She recalled that she had sung so many songs for him. She started the pallavi of one of those memorable songs ‘Nimishangal polum vaachaalamaakkum’, and the rest of the song was rendered by a young aspiring singer.
Vani’s next tribute was someone we too know well- the great MB Srinivasan. She recalled a lovely song that she sang for him for the film Sivathandavam ( stg. Kamal, KC added)- the song is a gentle lullaby that goes ‘ Andhi mayangi illa, thamarappoigai urangi illa’- again Vani sang the pallavi, while another budding singer took over. The song has a great caressing guitar backdrop, and a bewitching violin interlude—the genius of MBS is full flow—
With bated breath, I was waiting for her to sing what I always think to be her best song for MBS in Tamizh- my wish was soon granted- Vani sang ‘Amma undhan kai valaiyaai aaga maatena’ (Bharathidasan’s song, from the film Nijangal-1982)- oh, the bliss!
KC then reminded her of another MBS masterpiece, a stunning classical JC-VJ duet from the Malayalam film Bandanam. VJ sang a few lines of the song ‘Ragam sri ragam, udaya sri ragam’- and then a young singer took over. The song is an amazing ragamalikai- the Hamsadwani and Vasantha (‘prapanja madhuvana vasantha ragam’) bits were scintillating.
The end came all too soon- I was rudely made conscious of it when KC started thanking her. He wished that she should sing a lot more in Malayalam. He prayed to the Almighty to bless her with a long life and good health.
Vani’s eyes were misty as she said “ This is the first time in my life that I have opened up so much and shared my memories, my thoughts, my songs. Thanks to Asianet for coaxing so many details from me. I always feel that artistes should be honoured thus while they are still living- the archives of such programmes may be of use to posterity. I am grateful to Asianet for recording my thoughts when I am still living. Please continue to shower your love on me. Namaskaram, Nanni. Thank you so much--”
KC raised his arms in salutation for this great artiste, and then touched her feet with reverence. Vani touched his head in blessing. She waved to the orchestra in thanks, and then, with KC leading the way, she walked away gracefully from the set---filling the viewers with an inexplicable lump in the throat—
Friends, it has been a pleasure bringing a recap of the programme to you all. Let us hope that the programme acts as a reminder to present day Music Directors of this wonderful singer, whose voice still holds the same magic that it did 20 years back- let us not be deprived of this voice anymore--
