Well, for those who are wondering what I'm talking about, here's an explanation (or at least an attempt at one): I'm sure you all remember "Minsaara Poovae" from "Padaiyappa". It was a song in Carnatic style, a song that I really liked, but it was different in that the rhythm of the song was quite fast - You could feel the intense heat and the rivalry between the two characters - there is so much "energy" in the song.
How many other songs are there in TFM? What's your opinion of this style? Can we have a list of such songs?

'azhaithaal varuvaale' from Jaadhi Malli. Very IR'ish composition from Maragathamani. Brilliant use of raagas Sriranjani and Sivaranjani to bring out a unique KB touch.

Nagas,
You are right abt the 'Poo Malarnthida' song. The other song that i was refering to is 'Ithu Oru Nila Kallam'. To be specific, it is the first musical interlude in this song. Excellent fusion of carnatic and western. Wish it was longer!!
I believe if westerners or present day indians discover this bit, they will juz say "WOW!!" It will go down with them very well....and something that IR created 2 decades ago!
Really Wow!

we missed the all time best: mannavan vandhAnadi. no song comes within a mile of this in "very carnatic", as well as light to be a movie song. if we dig up GR, KVM and some MSV songs, we will find a LOT.

Vandhaal Mahalakshmiye - Uyarndha Ullam
Keeravani - Paasa Paravaigal?

I couldn't agree with you more about the interlude in "Idhu oru nila kaalam". That alaap(?) + guitars, esp. the bass + excellent drumming makes it one of the best examples of early "fusion" in Tamizh film music.

G Ragavan:
(I am a Northie fan of VJ+PS+SJ)
Shouldnt Ezhu Swarangalukkul qualify? And Mangala Kannagi?
IMO "Kavithai kelungal" has a western touch. Its energetic, but I wonder if its really a Carnatic song.
Then my favourite "mannavan vaanthanadi thozhi" by PS could be part of this list.
BTW, VJ-SPB duets in Shankarabharanam (esp. "Brocheva.." and "dorakuna ...") are quite vigorous. Again VJs song "aanathi neeyara" from Sawthikianam (- telugu ) is one more such song.
Moreover these songs by PS:
2. Nalanthaana (thillana mohanambaal)
3. marainthirunthu( thillana mohanambaal )
I hope I havent messed up the spellings :-))

IMHO - when it comes to vigour/strength/ and effortless rendition in that Ati-Tar saptak,(for any song - classical or not classical), I feel nobody can even touch Vani Jayaram's feet!

VJ did calssical based songs better than anybody else. Even in hindi, Bole Re Papihara is more than sufficient to tell her name. All my north indian friends die for that song.
Yezu Swarangkalukul and Mangkala Kannaki also quality.
Vaazndthaal Unnodu Vaazndthirupean Enru Vanam Pukundthaal Seethai - Savithri - Vani Jayaram - MSV
Aadal Kalaiye Devan Thandthathu - Sri Raghavendra - KJYesudas - IR
Changkey Muzangku - Kalangkarai Villakam - Seerkazi & P.Suseela - MSV
Oru Pon Maanai Naan Kaanath - Maithili Ennaik Kaathali - SPB - TRajendar
The above are also good songs and fit in to the above mentioned categories..

G Ragavan:
"Bole re papihara" is a masterpiece, but I dont think its a VIGOROUS classical song. An example of a vigorous classical song is "saanware saanware" by Lata (another fav. of mine - esp. for Hindi songs) sung for Ravi Shankar.
Anyway, this is a tamil df.....

kk,
kannum kannum is a energetic song i suppose! ..
i remember few songs like aadal kaniro and chinnangiru kiliye kannamma sung my MLV if i'm right! and singaaravelane deva - a masterpiece from SJ.

Yes. "Chingkara velane deva" by SJ and "Varuvaan Vadivelan" by VJ are also good examples.

I agree.. but is it a carnatic song? I doubt.
- From: swara (@ 141.14.139.162)

I think no other singers can ever sing 'singara vela'. SJ was simply excellent. That is my all time favourite. What about the recent 'enge enadhu kavithai' from 'kandukonden kandukonden' - Chithra has sung it very well. And manam virumbhudhe from Harini.
- From: swara (@ 141.14.139.162)

And in the oldies, paattum naane and oru naal podhuma from thiruvilayadal - both TMS and BMK have done a wonderful job. Marudha malai maamuniye murugaiya - I don't remember the name of the movie, but the high pitch and the speed is really amazing in this song. Paarthen sirithen, mounathil vilayadum manasatchiye... oh, there are many!

on: Wed Oct 17 14:14:29 EDT 2001
kk,
i'm not sure if it could be treated as carnatic but i feel it has the touch of carnatic songs that are meant for dance alone..for instance, thaaye yshodha, kuzhal oodhi manamellam etc... what do u say?

Many here are picking from the sixties and before..my picks from the eighties and later
1. Nee ondru thaana - Uunnaal mudiyum Thambi - brisque from start to finish..
2. Kalaivaaniye -Sindhu Bhairavi
3. Sowkiyama - a very "energetic" song although not rendered very well IMO by Nnithyashree
4. Maanida sevai dhrogama - Unnaal mudiyum thambi
5. Isaiyarasi - Thaai mookambikai - this song tops all...a must listen for brisk carnatic song lovers..

Hi guys! I'm the Vijay who started this thread. We are compiling quite a long list here, aren't we? Thanks for your response, guys.
What would you say of "Pon Maalai Pozhudhu" from "NizhalhaL"? It's not full of vigour, but it's got a strong rhythm. I'd say it's certainly got energy. Good work by IR.

We missed songs from "Koil Pura"
1. Vetham nee Iniya naatham nee - KJY - IR
2. Amuthe Thamize Azakiya Moziye - PSuseela & Uma Ramanan - IR
These are also very good songs.
