I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

M - Since are gifted with such total recall - could you also think of the VJ song from the film Unnai Thedi Varuvaen (Dir. Sridhar, MD: IR) - it was a slow, seductive nightclub crooner number...It was not very popular or anything, but it was quite a different song for VJ and she sang with the right oomph. Very Jazz-inspired composition...

Another interesting song by VJ - fluffy in lyrics and very casually sung by her - from the film Kuva Kuva Vaaththukkal:
"Nenachaen Nenachaen Unnathan Nenachaen" - once again an IR composition.

Two years ago Vani had done a concert of bhajans in Nepal - i think Kathmandu. I had read an article in the Hindu about that one. It said that "Vani Jairam's regular practising of ati-tar saptak is a rare phenomenon even among pure classical musicians". Is that true? Experts on music may answer this.
I am not able to trace this article anywhere now.

I read recently that Vani Jairam was invited to sing at the Jodhpur Palace for the Maharajah's birthday. She sang a song that was written and composed on the spur - based on the lyrics by the Maharajah. The court was invited to attend the felicitation. This was covered in the Northern Indian Hindi dailies.
(VJ also sings annually at the Chittorgarh Meera Samaroh.)

I heard the duet "Unnai Kaanum Neram Nenjam Ragam Palanooru Paadum Dinandhorum" - on a local station -
by VJ and PJC from Unnai Naan Sandhiththaen. It is such a well sung, and emotionally nuanced duet. The "thaiyarethaiya" chorus interlude is also done with such restraint and class. A fine example of voice, composition (IR) and words all coming together to produce a lingering experience of grace. Bravo!

Thanks, susi. Your are right. There is another duet in the same film which goes: "Hey, I Love You, Andhi Veyil Minnivarum Pozhudhu." Both KJY-VJ get a rap for "lack" of versatility...but these songs prove otherwise!

susi - you are an archive of some really hidden VJ songs...Haven't heard any of the above...Where do you find them yourself??
the only adavadi songs I know of VJ are two duets with SJ:
Machchanai Paradi - Thangamagan
Andha Kaanangathai - Ragam Thedum Pallavi

In THIS matter, I agree with Mr Naaz completely. This issue of "versatility" is IMHO a blanket statement. Asha and Janaki are versatile, 100% - but Vani (and LM too) - though they have a more serious image/looks etc - are just as versatile. Their songs of the "western type" ,"naughty type" etc etc prove that. These songs may be less in number, but infinite in quality. I think the issue of "lack of versatility" comes from inadequate exposure to their songs.
Yet another point - why should WESTERN MUSIC (and sometimes crazy antics in some songs)be considered as a yardstick for versatility?? (As a digression, I have a problem when people say Kishore is India's most versatile singer - why just because he had a fantastic stage presence, an excellent sense of humour, and could do all sorts of crazy and comical acts effortlessly, some of which fall into the category of pure mimicry? Not to say he wasnt good at that (or at singing serious songs), but does THIS thing become a yardstick for versatility??)
OTOH KJY may not have many songs with yoddling, singing in male and false female voice (eg - kishore in "half ticket") - but hey!!! KJY has done something much deeper - he has explored the treasures of Carnatic music, part and parcel of our heritage, to the greatest depths. Isnt this a much more marvellous feat?
I think versatility has always two dimensions -
1)the number of different types of songs u sing
2)the depth to which u go in that particular genre, the number of facets of that genre that u can present. Maybe this point is subjective.
People tend to forget point #2.
Bhimsen Joshi has rarely ventured out of pure Hindustani classical - apart from a few fine bhajans and abhangs- but the depth to which he has explored it is terrific. His voice has supreme divinity. I have heard literally several of his tapes with renditions of Raga Yaman, a simple and basic raaga. Yet every time, I find he sings something totally different. Isnt this versatility? Exploring hidden facets of "one and the same" thing?
Why should Vani/LM have to sing naughty songs or cabaret songs all the time, to prove that they are versatile? (Note - i am NOT sying, Vani cannot do these. She HAS done justice to these, but maybe on less number of occasions) Isnt the divinity that is seen/heard in her semiclassicals (I particularly wish to mention apoorva raagangal, shankarabharanam, swathikiranam, balanagamma, manmadha leelai here) a mark of her versatility? Hasnt she achieved a few miraculous things in these songs?
For me, even if Vani Jairam has stuck to only devotionals and semiclassicals, I would still have regarded her to be just as "versatile".
This is all IMVHO. It is not meant to be passed off as any truth. Its just what I feel (very strongly).

We should listen the song "Aasa Vechean Ummelathaan" from Muthal Iravu. That is more than sufficient to prove VJ's versatility.

susi, is that the song from "paththinip peN"? I heard it once on the radio long time ago. Couldn't find it anywhere after that.
Recently came across a lovely semiclassical by VJ/TMS/PS. Song is "indhira villin Ezu niRam" from the movie "idhaya rOjA" (or something like that).

Naaz,
Nitham nitham nellu choru is a true example of VJ's versatility. I think IR chose her (as opposed to SJ for this song) for proper diction and the youthfulness of her voice (to go with "padaphet" Jalaylakshmi who sings in the movie).

Neel D,
I've heard about the songs from Paththini Penn but have never really had the opportunity to sample them...Was the music for that film by Chandra Bose? Or VS Narasimhan? What are the chances of finding the songs from that film on the net?
Nitham Nitham Nellu Choru is a song centred entirely on diction, enunciation and voice. It is a hard song to do as the musical accompaniment is basic - thavil and ghatam - and just the "appetising" lyrics matched by the drooling energy of VJ's singing. A very unusual composition - and an underrated classic.
(It is interesting to note that the "lyrics" of that song - pedestrian as they may be - still tower higher than the so-called adavadi songs of recent times. Nitham Nitham is a good example of how a song can have "everyday" lyrics and yet not be considered "cheap.")

Was Paththini Penn directed by RC Sakthi? I vaguely remember reading that somewhere...and it had an actor by the name Chitra? (who also had a bit role in KB's Mandhil Uruthi Vendum?)

I've been trying to get a hold of VJs songs from Sri Ragavendhar. The one audio link on swara.com says "file missing" (O Ragavendhra!) - Does anyone know where I might find other working links? Thanks for your help in advance!
