  I think it was Rajasekar - who died copule of
  years ago and Rajni was helping his finanicialy
  ailing family.
  This Rajasekar is NOT the one from Robert-Rajasekar.
  He also directed one more hit movie for Rajini

  Rajasekar came to limelight after the hits of "thambikku endha ooru" and "malayoor mambattiyaan". His last film was also with Rajini, "Dharmadurai" which was another big hit.

  Yes, its the same Rajasekar who directed "padikkaathavan". Apart from these movies, he also directed a AVM film called "Amma" with Sarita as heroine, music by Sankar & Ganesh. It has one good song "mazaiyE mazhaiyE..iLamai muzhudhum nanaiyum varaiyil vaa.." written by Vairamuthu.

  He also directed the 'blockbuster' paatti solli thattathE for AVM. Starring Paqndiyaraajan, Urvasi and Manorama. Music by Chandra bose if I am not mistaken. The movie has a song sequence very similar to one from Padikkaathavan. With a car going over buildings etc. :)

  What about 'Vikram' and 'Maaveeran'? These were highly anticipated big budget movies produced by two biggest stars in Tamil film world and he directed BOTH of them.

  I think KAAKI CHATTAI is also Rajasekar's Mega movie, which brought great fame to Satyaraj.

  Rajasekar was the director. His blockbuster movies for Superstar includes Padikkathavan, Dharmadurai, Mappillai and Thambikku endha ooru. Please forget about *Maaveeran*. He also directed Kakki Chattai (Kamal), Kanmaniyae pesu (sivakumar)
  and Patti sollai thattathae.
  
  Unfortunatley he died on 100 th day of *Dharmadurai*
