i was listening to 'mella mella ennai thottu' from vaazhkai and that inspired me to start this topic. more often than not the tempo of a song is determined by the start the song is given. in the above song raja brilliantly combines a violin with percussion to set the rhythm .
iam looking for songs that have a brilliant starting piece which sets the flow for the song.
examples can include raakamma, shubalekha(telugu), etc. the songs need not be fast paced. for example 'poove sempoove' has a melodious but a good start, IMO. looking forward to u'r contributions.

some other good songs with extremely pleasing starts:
(1)Ninnukori
(2)Aruna Kirana Deepam
(3)Oru Naal Andha
(4)Chandirarum Sooriyarum
(5)Thendral Vandhu
I am not adding more because I feel that the listing is seemingly infinite - especially for IR songs.

Vijay:
I guess you're talking about songs which can be recognised easily by anybody by listening to just the first few bars....
1. Idhu Oru Pon Maaalai Pozhudhu
2. Poomalaye Thol Serava
3. Ilamayenum poongatru
4. Idhayam Oru Koil
5. Enulle Enulle ;-)
6. Yedho Mogham
7. Katril Endhan Geetham (Everytime I hear the guitar strumming, I float away into paradise...:-)) After the humming starts, you cannot talk to me till the song is over ! As a matter of fact, I am a little wary of listening to this song while driving on the highway because I am afraid I will become 'meimarandhufied' and crash into someone !
8. Nalam Vazha
9. Paadava Unpaadalai
...
Vittudunga Vijay :-( Nadakaadha vishayam...it's like counting the number of grains of sand on Marina Beach !
Song overloading ayiduchu :-) "Your search returned more than 1000 songs. Please modify your search criteria with additional conditions or restrict your search to 'one' particular year at a time" :-)))

Who can forget the intro violins in Anandha rAgam.. (Panneer pushpangaL)...Excellent intro.
Most of the songs in guru,yAtramOzhi (Love the prelude to eri malai kAtril, aruNa KiraNa, thathAram ) have beautiful preludes.

okay, i do not know whether this would help, but i restrict the list to raja's songs only :-)))))
what iam looking for is some special kind of starts like say raakamma which was completely different and never tried before. the starting music should be very innovative, creative and at
the worst should atleast set the tempo for the song.

Vijay, I know nothing about the bars but the following songs surely set a mood of the song besides being innovative and creative. IMO,the BEST start in terms of flow, rythm, melody and setting mood so elegant are
1) 'AgAya gangai' from dharma yuddham.
SJ is at her best in bringing out emotions of a girl who is in love and wants to shed her heart feelings completely! MV is also at his best in this song. Excellent way of presentation by IR.
2) 'santhana kAtRE' from thanikkAttu rAjA
Brilliant orchestraion with violins, guitars in the beginning of the song.
3) 'sangeetha mEgam' from udaya geetham Fabulous presentation of trumpet, drums and violins.
4) 'vAnam keezhE vandhal enna' from thoongAthE thambi thoongAthE
Once again mesmerising combo of trumpets, drums ,violins to set a mood for the song. Kudos to IR again! And to SJ once again for that initial humming piece.
5) 'en vAzhvilE varum anbE vaa' from thambikku entha ooru
violins+guitars+trumpet simply great start!
6) 'rAthiriyil poothirukkum thAmaraithAn peNNo' from thanga magan
guitars+flute+violins superb way to go.
7) 'adi peNNE poNNoonjal Adum iLamai' from 'muLLum malarum'
tabla+flute+violin+..+..+????!!!! Oh man! If this song was digitally mastered and recorded , what an effect could this have ?
Songs that have good start by MSV, are(IMO)
'Nee ennenna sonnAlum kavithai' in 'nEtru indru nALai'.
'pAadum pOthu nAn thendrl kAtru' by SPB, same film
'pArtha gayabagam illayO' from puthiya paravai
'poNmagaL vanthAL' from soRgam
'unnai aRinthAL ' from vEttaikkAran
IR scores have violin(s) predominantly used in most of the songs including your 'rAkkammA kaiya thattu'.
Vijay , I have answered your query regarding CD recording in the thread 'CDs with % good songs' thread. Don' know if you gone thru it.

sorry for digression:
observer, thank u very much for the info. why i asked about CD recording was some of the old gems of raja which i recorded from a shop called supersonic were recorded from LP's and hence there was this bad hissing noise. so i was wondering if that would be removed when u have a CD recording. for example the very song u mentioned 'adi penne' had a background noise and this disturbs me sometimes.( i have to change my equaliser settings to reduce the noise).
but in case the shop does not have CD's but only LP's for those old songs, would u still hear that hissing noise when those songs are recorded on a CD?
i always wished ( or dreamed) that the companies which manufacture pre-recorded CD's should ask any one of us for the proper choice and sequence of songs. how badly they mess up the selection of songs in those CD's?
vayatherichalaa irukku.
as for the new songs, sometimes i prefer to hear them on cassetes itself with CD recording. they are good enough for me.

hi guys,
how come everyone's forgotten "maasi maasam aalaan ponnu", "o vasantha raaja" and "poomaalaiye thoall saera vaa"? they had absolutely brilliant starts. but then there are too many IR numbers that could qualify, vittudungappa.

There are several songs of IR that have excellent intro. But I don't know how many people have noticed this. This is one of the best (IMHO).
Thendral vandhu ennai thodum - from thendralE ennai thodu. It just builds the mood of romanticism effortlessly.

I want to add to this list IR's new song 'edho edho' from manam virumbudhe unnai. The starting music and the chorus leading up to the words are just unbelivable. i am addicted to this song nowadays.

I agree with Observer and Krishna:
Just unbelievable preludes as followzs:
AASAI NENJIN KANAVUGAL (not even God can top this One)
THIRU THERIL VARUM SILAYO (not even God's wife can inspire this one)
Sandana Kaattre (God must be wondering how in the heavens..)
O Nenjame Idhu Un Raagame (In Hell it must be snowing! How could a mortal compose such a prelude?)
Oru Poovanathilu Vandu (God would prefer to live in the forests of the South India for a change to enjoy this prelude.)
Mudal Mudalaka Kadal Duet (Composed for God and his wife)
Bharathi Kannamma (For God and his friends!)
There a few hundreds more of preludes that can take us God's years to share with everyone here.

Folks,
This thread is driven by a host of IR songs, and rightly so...
The following songs are also as good as the ones pointed before...
1) Adhi Kalai Nilave (from Urudhi mozhi)
Just love IR's voice...
2) Eval yaaro vaan vittu (from Raajavin Paarvaiyele)
3) Yetho Yetho Endhan nenjil (from Manum Virumbuthe Unnai)
Those who haven't listened to this song... Please do
so. Amazing song.
4) Kootukkuyilai (from MVU again)...
Starts like a prayer which beautifully merges with
the actual song...
5) Thattum Thalangu (from Vetri Vizha)
Not exactly a melody, but the starting left me
flabbergasted...
6) Ithu Sangeedha Thirunalo (from KM)
This is very obvious, but couldn't resist pointing
this out...
7) Oru Santhana Kaatukkule (from Ellame en Rasathan)
Great humming piece by SJ...
8) Sembaruthi Poovukku and Manukkum Santhaname (from Dharma)
9) Katha Poola Thoonum (from Veera Thalattu)
10) Naal Thorum (from Devathai)
11) Eruttil Than Vidiyum (from Poonthottam)
This cannot go on like this... This will never stop.
I will try pointing out some non-IR songs...
1) Boomiye Boomiye (from Sengottai)
2) Malare Mownama (Karna)
great flute prelude to the song...
3) Yen Pennendru Piranthai (from Love Today)
Excellent flute prelude to the song...
4) Kaadu Pottal Kaadu (from Karuthamma)
5) Poovukkena Pootu and Idhu Annai Boomi (from Bombay)
6) Poogum Vazhiyellam Kattre (from Ratchagan)
7) Anbendra Mazhiyele (from Minsara Kanavu)
The following songs deserve special mention...
It is only apt that the son of the Maestro has given us these songs
which have beautiful starts (not to mention the song itself...)
1) Malarodu Pesum Thendral (from Alexander)
Starts off like a suspense music which merges beautifully
with the song...
2) Indha Sirippinai Engu Parthen (from Naam Iruvar Namakku Iruvar)
3) Laila Laila (from Kathala Kathala) - excellent start
4) Yaaro yaar yaaro (from Ullasam)
We could also all the other 5 songs from this movie to this list :-)
I will try to list more songs later...
