Eventhough Ilayaraja did not utilise Vani's talent fully all the songs they made together were hits. Lets analyse all song. Anyone have any idea which song was the 1st with both of them together?? I think it is Manjal Arakumbothu movie alukoru Asai

Sangeetham En Degamandro - Balanagamma

Azhagiya Kalai Nilave - Rajarishi
Urugudhey Idhayame - Nooravadhu Naal
This is just a random, off-the-cuff list. I must disagree with the first line in the intro to this thread. IR and VJ gave these songs their best. And VJs singing talent in is evident in all her IR songs (and other MDs songs too.)
There may be any number of reasons why they did not collaborate extensively, but even IR cannot deny that almost every song (in the solos category) he offered VJ was realised to its best form. And this includes even a rather noisy number like Kuththum Oosi from Kazhugu.
So VJs talent was "utilised" fully. Just not as often as one would have liked. The loss is not theirs, but ours.

Vardhini and Vanir,
You've been listing some memorable songs by VJ both in this thread and the Vani Jayaram's songs thread. Please also share your thoughts on these songs: what you think of VJs solos/duets, what impresses you about her singing, which songs stay with you and for what reasons, etc.
As you are newcomers to these forums, it would be great to hear and learn from your point of view.
I look forward to your participation in both threads, and hope you will also join the discussions. Welcome!

Naaz,
Vani is the greates singer in tfm. Her ganir, panbu and alutham in her voice can't be compared. Although me era was the late 80's, I listened to most of her songs and I fell in love with her voice. She is the greatest.

Vanir -
Thanks for sharing your views. Please do so at every opportunity. While VJs film songs are good examples of her artistry, I think her tamizh devotionals (recent albums) are something to cherish. The songs from Krishna Gaanam (available at www.vanijayaram.com under the "Bhakti" section) are pure in every sense.
Please isten to these songs (and others) when you can, and share your comments with us.

This question has been nagging me in the past. Why were there not many songs in this VJ-IR combo although they have produced some wonderful songs?
This is my observation. Vani's voice suits that of a mature, sensible, head strong woman and we rarely come across such female characters in our TF.
IR has mostly used Vani for such characters IMO , inspired by MSV who also used VJ extensively for strong female character portrayals like AboorvaRaagangal, SilaNerangalilSilamanidhargal, Sirai , females in KB movies .
SJ's voice suits a nubile, innocent ,adolescent girl, a vulnerable , fragile beauty kind.
1. In azhageunnai.. film, the heroine Latha is a shown as a not so young , modern, career woman who has a decent job and probably that is why IR used VJ
2. Similar logic applies in Mullummalarum also, where Fatafat is shown as a wise, streetsmart , pragmatic wife of Rajini wallowing in ego borne out of complex. Here again, IR has used VJ for 'nitham nitham nellu soru'
IlamaiUnjalaadugiradu has Sripriya in the role of a modern, progressive woman who disapproves the hero's infidelity and hence the choice was VJ.
In Nooravathu naal , IR uses VJ for the song 'Ulagam muzhudum pazhaiya rathiri' and 'Uruguthe idayame' songs for the 2 daring, probing female characters(Nalini and her sister)
In OruKaidiy..'ABC neevasi'is sung for Radha who is better educated than Kamal and plays the role of a mentor.
Enulle engo from RosappuRavikkaikari is also sung for Deepa who is shown as a woman ,ahead of her times and willing to experiment newer pastures in life .
This trend might have continued till mid 80's after which he opted for a new singer Chitra to fill VJ's place . He used Chitra for SinduBhairavi, ManadilUrudiVendum(strong female characters by Suhasini),
PaaduNillave (for Nadiya who competes with Mohan in singing).
Most of the females portrayed in TF are demure, teenaged, starry eyed ,coy beauties and no wonder VJ doesn't find her place to a great extent. I my be wrong in my observation.

Mythila,
I think the operative word in our analysis is "character." As things have moved so quickly to an out-and-out commercial realm, as everything seems to be judged on the basis of temporality (as opposed to longevity) - a quick hit, a quick buck and on to the next - it is not just film plots and roles for actors which have become "character" less. This slide down the slippery slope of crass denominators is also felt in the lyrics, the screenplay, the cliched love-story churnings, and an obvious disregard for anything native or authentic.
You are right in saying that VJ and PS during their heydays in TFM/TelFM sang for author-backed heroines. But, the truth in that generalisation can only be stretched so far. Other MDs (besides IR) have used VJs voice for actors like Viji, Jayashree, Sulakshana, Urvasi, Seetha, Revathi, - just to name a few, with no particular emphasis.
Yes, the names you mention are definitely "women" compared to the "girls" I have named, but that merely points to the fallacy that VJs voice was only suited for "strong" and not the "flighty".
If you enumerate the solos compositions by IR which went VJs way, you will notice that most of them are challenging in conception and demand a singer who has the ability to scale dizzying heights without faltering in rendition - Enulil Engo, Kavidhai Kelungal, Azhagiya Kalai Nilave, Sangeetham En Degamandro, Kaatrinile Varum Geetham, En Kalyana Vaibogam, Thanimaiyil Yaar Ival, Naane Naana, Ilanguiyle....
So, I would contend that character or no character (in role terms) - IR knew a VJ calibre composition when he dreamt one (in the late 70-early 80.)
Interestingly enough, IRs choice of scale seems to have also undergone a shift since the advent of Chitra ( which is similar to the songs SJ sang for him.) and now Sadhana and Shreya.
The move - as I see it (or should that be hear it?) is from "authority" of voice to "anonymity" of voice. No special signature is evident in current songs or current singing. It is what one might term "factory" music. So, "character" may or may not be out, but you can't deny that the "keyboard" is definitely in. Hence, in my theory, the ethos of breathless "electronic" voices which rules the day (and only the day, mind you - not the month, year or decade :-))
