To Mr.E.Hari:
Sorry for my previous comment. But my fear is that this topic will also turn into an "IR pughazh malai". Please understand. IMO, even 1965-1975 was excellent. People in the younger generation would say 1985 - 1995 was excellent. So, this assessment can be purely yours and it ought to vary depending on an individual's age, perception and ideas.

Please refer to ALL the earlier postings on ALL subjects. This string can become very long but eventually the conclusion will be the same : IR Rules OK!

Who said in 1975-1985, only IR songs are popular. The reason I selected this period, especially 1975-1980 is, for the first time there is no single domination in the field. Apart from IR, MSV, vkumar, sankar-ganesh, KVM and lot of others giving some of the melodious music known in TFM histroy. Apart from kanadasan for the first time, more than one good lyricst writing songs, I mean valli, pulamipittan, muthulingam, kamarajan, panjuarunchalam. This is the period, melody was in his glory in TFM. Even now I can happily trade any cd\cassette, if get any song from this period, how obscure may it be. Hey, it is my individual opinion, but I like this period not because of IR alone. BYE now,

55 to 65 was THE golden era for TFM.
maru malarchi thodangiya nEram.
esp. 60 to 65 is the time of MSV-TKR.
every song from evry movie was a hit, novel and
were sung/hummed by the people all the time.
There was NO TV and cable - people just used
murphy radio and REALLY enjoyed music and lyrics.
In 75-85, the lyrics started detoriarating - that
was a major minus point. people didn't have
access to streo players to really appreciate
the music. there wasn't any healthy competition
between MDs as it was during 60's.
All the people mentioned by HAri (except IR) were
at their peak and wanted to get established during
60's. Also better movies with situations for
good songs came in 60's movies.
My vote goes for 55-65 era.

I'm with "Bones" Sathya regarding the 55-65 period as the golden era of music (unadulterated by TV and unpolluted by stuff passing for lyrics). Since that's when I was born, I got familiar with the songs through radio and my parents much later. Been through the IR period and through the ARR & Everybody period, and have even learned to appreciate some selected pieces by these composers/blenders, but the 55-65 songs have stayed with me.
When I listen to CD's/cassettes with the late 70's--now songs, I have to fast forward and skip songs to get to the 2/8 good songs. When I have my TKR-MSV/early MSV tapes on I can actually listen to the entire thing (Karnan, Aalaya Mani, Paasa Malar are a few examples).

Ok something is starting now in this thread. There is no doubt that songs in 1955 - 1965 are great, but we are talking about the best period here. Those songs sounded great, partly because of their films/actors and picturisation. In 1975 - 1980, most of the films were bad, most of the film name, I did not even know. But these songs stayed because of one factor, song, nothing else. Most of the songs I am listening this period, I did not even know who acted it, who directed it. Another factor I liked in this period, is the variety and different song syltes, because for the first time in TFM, there are more than one dominant MD, though that changed after 80's sadly. BTW I can't listen to half of the 1960's songs, because of one factor, TMS.

Hari:
It's hard for me to buy into your logic that the early music era stays special because of the film/actors and picturization. Remember, that is the era with no TV to reinforce picturization and least marketing/ technology hype. The songs had to stand on their own two feet -- lyrics and music.
I won't argue with your aversion to TMS since that is a matter of personal taste.

Music, if it is a good music, should be immortal.
ie you should be comfortable to listen to those songs in any point of your lifetime(not boring after listening for n number of times). I would say, the music with these qualities and the one which brings you 'piece of mind', is the best. In that case, my vote goes to 4.

kanchana, almost all the old songs, are from very good films. How many good songs, you think, are out there from relatively unknown movies?.
I have no doubt that 60's songs, definetely got some help from their films. There are whole lot of sivaji/MGR songs, which you can only enjoy in vedio. That is not true for most of the later day songs. How many MGR/sivaji songs, we can enjoy in tape?.
Someone said that MSV was at his peak in 60's. May be, when he was with TKR. Afterwards he was ok, until he started his second honeymoon with KB. Infact from aboorva ragangal to agni satchi, his songs are much better than his 60's songs. KVM also sounded different from his classical oriented tunes in this period. There are lot of cute and smooth songs in this period, compared to emotional, sensitive songs in the 60's, which needed bit of overacting both in the screen and in the recording studio, and they are not melodious, in my book. But what can you expect, when the lead singer is TMS?.

Hari:
I think we both are strongly driven by our tastes, perceptions, and other life-stage related factors. Shall we agree to disagree?
I still listen to the 60's oldies without being conscious of whose movie it was. There have been many times, when I've gone and gotten an old movie just because the song was so good and I was curious about the movie. (Believe me, the movie always spoilt the song for me!)
Net, I love the old era for its lyrics+music combination. But that has not prevented me from enjoying the music from other eras, so I'm not going to demean the other eras' contribution to TFM.
I believe your question comparing the eras is the most meaningful comparative question among all the comparative discussions in this forum (again, my personal opinion only). Your era question is more wholistic and treats movie songs as a composite product of multiple, interacting factors --lyrics, composition, vocals, orchestration, technology etc. When we start analyzing one factor in isolation from all other factors, when all other factors are not constant, we are just not executing valid comparisons. Bye for now!

kanchana,
It is a lovely post and I throughly enjoyed it. I agree that your disagreement. As I told b4, it is our age which to some extent influences our likes and dislikes. As a 1971 born, I was attracted to songs in 70's more than previous era. That does not mean that I won't listen to old songs as you listen to newer songs. Anyhow we are comparing apples with oranges, and we are
never going to get a fair result. So a friendly handshake with mutual respect for each others opinion, can we close this discussion?.

You are a good sport too! I guessed you are a twenty-something and I'm sure by now you know I'm a thirty-something. That's where the real difference lies--a decade!

My vote goes to the period from 1977 to 1995.
During this period the Musical Maestro and Genius
Shri. Ilayaraja dominated the Tamil Filmdom.
Infact, I would say even now Ilayaraja is at the
top. (E.G. PORKALAM) The only difference is as on
today is he is putting more Film Music.
Can you name anybody from India who has got the
recognition from Phil Harmonic Orchaestra Group.
