Thanks for reminding me of "Naan yennum pozhudhu" :-)
Saravanan,I vaguely remember hearing a PS(or some other singer?) version of today's SOTD. Is it from this film?

One of the best SOTDs is todays. Worth remembering and mentioning.
Almost most of the thamizh hindu family must be having Kandha Sashti Kavasam by Soolamangalam Sisters. All other singers followed the same tune and style of Sashti Kavasam by Soolamangalam Sisters. The one exception was Seerkaazhi. KSK sung by him has different tune, which is of typical Seerkazhi style.

Saravanan, Kudos. you raised the bar once again. Bubka be damned! The songs you mentioned take me down memory lane.... And I would really love to see Ragasiya penn 117 :-)
wasn't malligai poo pottu ...
shenbagha poo pottu..paadu pillaikku thaalattu also a SR duet?

bb: Great choice! Consider featuring Bharathiyaar songs once in a while! There is a song about a pond, a tree, a nest on the tree and a bird sung by Soolamangalam. I am unable to recall the first line. Saravanan might remember. It has the word 'ooruni', the word used for 'kuLam' in some parts of Tamilnadu.
Consider it for SOTD, if you have it.

Soolamangalam Rajalaxmi, with her cool voice, really does bring the blissful scenery associated with the Saraswathy picture we all are used to : the serene pond and the serene face of Saraswathy on her white lotus (Was it by Ravi Varma?) !
The sisters would live in memory as long as Kantha Shasti and Kantha Kuru Kavasams are read and listened to. I cannot read Kantha Shasti today without reverting automatically to the tune set to it by them.
And a great write up, Saravanan. Glad to know so much details of the younger sister.

when i listen to the first bgm of adi penne song, especially when the violins touch the crescendo ,before jency starts the line "vaanathil sila meghaam", i don't know why ,i feel like crying everytime.
bb , my post on muratukaalai song got lost. so iam reposting it. podhuvaga en manasu is only an average song. but have u noticed the interludes are too sweet to compose for a dabba song.msvfan wanted " my name is billa" as rajini's intro. but i feel that song grates my ears, no sweetness. but the best intro to rajini was given by maestro in netrikan for appa rajini through the bgm violin.

Saravanan -
Only you have the courage to travel a path less trodden...who else could bring this gem by SR to the for(e)um?
A voice as distilled as the still of dawn. A song that sends you into the day with a calm that conquers all. Thanks for this 24hr kavacham!
(The short clip is also fine example of SRs intuitive mastery. A full voice; a timbre that breathes life into every note!)

Saravanan, thanexcellent writeup about Sulamangalam Sisters. Violinist Kunnakkudi Vaidyanathan used to accompany them for a long time and in one of the interviews, he mentioned that he got all his training from the sisters and they helped him shape his violin career...

"but the best intro to rajini was given by maestro in netrikan for appa rajini through the bgm violin."
Ha! Do you have that piece? I've been searching for quite a while. I would love to feature that, and a similar piece in "chinna veedu" :)

bb,
if u get the appa rajini intro piece of netRRikaN do make it as a SOTD along with the song "theeraadha vizhayaattuppiLLai" like what you have done with "jambulingamae jadaadhara".
"Theeraadha vizhayaattuppiLLai" aptly describes the character of appa rajini in that movie. Kaviyarasar has done yet another "varavu aettaNaa" with that song, not to mention the kalakkal konashtai contribution by our SPB and superb tune by IR.

Thanks, guys :)
Vijay, I don't recall any other version of this song.
Vengayam, yes, 'malligai poopottu kannanukku mangala neeraattu; shenbaga poopottu paadu oru senthamizh thaalaattu' is a TMS-SR duet from Thalaattu-1969. Music: M.L.Srikanth.
Raj, the song you're referring to goes like this:
Chinna chinna ooruniyaam
then manakkum solaigalaam
Ooruniyin karaiyil
ongi nikkum maamaramaam
maamarathu kilaithanile
maadappura koodugalaam
koodugalil kudi irukkum
kunjugalaam pinjugalaam--
-a great SR solo from Prasad Movies' Thaayilla Pillai. Music: KVM.

No wonder people are confused about my whereabouts.
Interpreter (@ 203.200.216.62), you seem to have chosen my nickname by coincidence! I hereby request you to kindly pick another one to avoid confusing fellow DF-ers who know me from before. NOM!

Saravanan,The songs you choose cheer me up but your write ups always would bother me due to the melancholic undercurrent .I really feel for the artists who never got their due ......sasirekha,GKV,VKumar,and now Soolamangalam. It is nice that someone like you remeber and remind us of their extraordianry efforts (which invariably went unrewarded and many times unnoticed as well). Thanks for this great song and a wonderful writeup.
SR thru her impeccable pronounciation & involved singing does the right justice to the great tune by MSV.Somehow her voice frequently got associated with middle aged heroines( that includes 19 year old Sheela!).
I have always wondered as to who would choose the lines from Bharathiyar songs when they try to fit that in the movie.4 lines from first paragraph, last 4 from thrid charanam etc.Still give us,listeners a complete feel of the verse.

Song of the Day: romba naaLaaga enakkoru aasai from ennadi meenatchi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/rombanaal.rm
- Sung by SPB and Vani Jayaram. Music by Shankar-Ganesh. The film starred Sivakumar and Sripriya.
- This song is a favorite of mine for the way SPB delivers. He croons, caresses and gives so many variations! On the other hand, VJ doesn't go all out. I also find her overpronounciation irritating!

VeLLai kamalathiley... Excellent song by Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi. My all time fav of SR:-). Enna oru thelivu in her pronounciation and rendition!! Thanks bb and Saravanan.
Saravanan: there was a dispute or so on a song starting with "Aruvi magaL alai osai" from Jeeva naadi (Ravichandran and Lakshmi). MD: Dhakshinamoorthy SwamigaL. It was a duet by KJ Yesudas and one of the sisters of Soolamangalam. The Paattu pusthagam and record cover says it is by S.Jayalakshmi (elder sister) whose voice is ditto of SR. But in Vaanoli, they always announce it as KJY+SR. If you have some info, please clarify.
Another nice short bit of SR from Vietnam veedu starting with "Vinnodum" for Padmini. I read in some mag that KVM liked her voice very much. May be due to this, there is a dialogue immediately after this bit-song... Sivaji tells Padmini "innum ur kural appidiye inimaiya irukku". I remember KVM had given her some good songs in his movies.
In Devarin 'Deivam' also, she sang a duet with MR Vijaya... "varuvaandi tharuvaandi malayaandi". Bothe of them appeared on the stage.
Sometime back, SR's sister Jeyalakshmi was Judge for a quarter-final episode in Sun TV's Saptha SwarangaL. She started the programme with "thudhipOrkku val vinai pOm" and remembered her sister. She told (naa thazhu thazhukka) "thangai kaalamaana piragu paaduvadhe illai"... One of the super sisters in music world :-)
Any idea about Soolamangalam Murali? is he in the field still?
Vijay: PS under L.Krishnan's music, had sung VeLLai thaamarai poovil iruppaaL and Kaakai siraginile in an album called "Deiveega vazhipaadu". Nice songs :-)

On "Romba naalaga..."
bb, I would say VJ did well in this song.. May be you try to compare the 'viraha dhaabha' stlye of other singers with VJ's in this song...? One cannot xerox others :-)
You know, Sivakumar and Sripriya were not in talking terms for a long time though they paired in many films. He even described her as "mariyaadhia theriyaadha peN", as she puts her leg over another in front of seniors :-) But in this song sequence, Siva summa poondhu viLayaaduvaar.. eppidi mudinjudhu? worth watching :-)
