Saravanan, Thanks for the vaNNa nilavan writeup. Interesting and informative read.
My respect for Gangai Amaran went up a couple of notches, knowing that he wrote this song!

Saravanan, thanks for the write up. Did you translate this? Where did it appear originally (chennaionline?).
bb - Gangai Amaran has written quite a few great lyrics.

i remember watching this movie long back..... the "sriPriya" character reminds me of the "Rachael" character in "FRIENDS" serial - just sleeping with each and everyone she comes across (iam sure some of u will curse me for this statement)..... may be i would have had a "pity" for the GANGA character (SNSM), but not for the "sripriya" character......
nevertheless, this movie had real great numbers by IR.... any idea if there is a CD version of the songs avbl any place ?

bb - iam sure u know this, but just in case, the song "Endraikku enindhaa Anandamaeee" in Vaidhegi Kaathirundaaal was also by GA....

sabesan,
Aval Appadithaan is a landmark Thamizh movie. Sripriya's character was way ahead of her time. You have simplistically defined her in oppressive moral terms. Her character is one of the best, progressive female characters to ever grace the Thamizh screen.
The songs were the only routine elements in the movie. Though "UravugaL" is a fabulous song, I would've preferred it left out of the movie.

Venkat- I found this write up some years back- I don't remember whether it was chennaionline- I saved it for a rainy day :-)-it was in English- I didn't have to translate it!
bb- GA has penned some great songs- Senthoora poovae, Raman aandaalum, Enullil engo engum geetham, Kaatril endhan geetham, Oru iniya manathu, Kaalai nera poonkuyil-- If only he had restricted himself to lyrics and music, perhaps he would still be in the reckoning--

Udhaya, i remember that the "sripriya" character, just to have a tit for tat at Rajini (not sure if tit for tat is the correct word, pazhi vangudaaal, what's the correct wordbaaaa), would ditch Kamal, and go out with Rajini, and then finally shout or tease Rajini in front of lots of people.... and similarly she would be giving "herself" to many male's believing that they are good..... i don't want to go into more detail on this, but to me, this is not "progressiveness"... all IMHO :-)....
sure, it was ahead of its times - as there were not (m)any movies made with that theme at that point....

seri vidunga. I know where you're coming from. I can elaborate too, but let's just enjoy the song and chew on our differences.

To just add two small bits to Udhaya's qualifications regarding Selvi of Aval Appadiththaan (somehow, I never really saw Sripriya as herself in this film...if that were ever possible!):
Selvi knows and fully understands the workings of the patriarchal world.
&
She is brave, bold and brazen to take it on and deal with it on HER terms.
SNSM's protagonist is Ganga.
AA's protagonist is Selvi.
Their respective character names are enough to point to their stories: One is a myth. The other is a designated "single" woman. The former wants to make nice (as in purify) the latter has enough political savvy to say: scr*w nice, I'm out of here!

Selvi? Manju is the name of Sripriyas character
- From: Naaz (@ 24.87.30.219)
on: Mon Jun 16 19:41:53 EDT 2003
Oh dear....
My memory is showing....up. Even if I've got the name wrong, the point(s) are still pertinent. What does Manju mean?
(Sorry about this mix up. But was Sripriya's name Selvi in some film? AOT perhaps? or Sridevi's in Moondru Mudichchu? 20 years and so many names in between...)

Just a recommendation:
For those of you who think that AA was "ahead of its times" (what does this mean??) I'd urge you to get your hands on this malayalam film: Adaminde Variyelu (Adam's Rib) which featured Srividya, Suhasini and Surya - three women representing the three classes - upper, middle and lower. Brilliant, in a nutshell.

From my now-rusting memory, here are some more good lyrics from Gangai Amaran:
thamthana namthana thALam varum (puthiya vArppugaL)
un pArvaiyil OrAyiram (amman kOvil kizhakkAlE) - many people thought it was Vairamuthu
siRu ponmaNi asaiyum athil theRikkum puthu isaiyum (kallukkuL Iram)
maNNil inthak kAdhal inRi yArum (kELadi kaNmaNi)
Also, some "janaranjaga" songs like:
Oram pO Oram pO rukkumaNi vaNdi varuthu (poNNu Urukku puthusu)
aNNE aNNE sippAi aNNE (kOzhi kUvuthu)
vAdi en kappakkezhangE (alaigaL Oivathillai) - not sure about this - can somebody confirm?

dig: adam's rib? some previously non-existent trivia neoron of my brain tells me that according to the bible, God created Eve from Adam's rib. True?
- From: Naaz (@ 24.87.30.219)

sriram -
The title was absolutely allegorical/biblical. It concerned three women and their "adam"ance to live their lives on their own terms. But not all succeed. I shouldn't say more. Try to watch it if you can.

interpreter: yes, vaadi an kapakkizhange was by GA, as was Niththam niththam nellu choru.
Yes, all songs in Amman kovil kizhakkaalae were by GA.
But- mannil indha kaadhal- wasn't that by Pavalar Varadharajan- I remember there was some controversy about it- is it in fact by GA?
Another great GA creation- Poonkathavae thaazhthiravaai--

Song of the Day: bambarak kaNNaalE from maNamagan thEvai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pambara.rm
- Wild, imaginative lyrics is not a feature of this age alone. Can you imagine a girl with bambarak kaN? Probably as bad a girl with strawberry kaN :-) Chandrababu though brings life to this song. The song is easily hummable, and has a lingering tune. It has very short santhams. I like the ending of the song, Chandrababu humming away in a low voice.
- The film starred Sivaji, and the music is by MSV.

bbeeeeeeeeeeeeee- music was by G Ramanathan, not MSV! Lyrics by KD Santhanam.
Bharani Pictures' Manamagan Thevai-1957 was produced by Banumathi. It was a'fun'tastic comedy and starred Sivaji,Banumathi,Chandrababu & others.
Other songs (if I remember right) were Kodai idi kaatru (with Jikki's endearing hmmhmm maatten) by AMR-Jikki, and Vennila jothiyaai veesuthae by Ghantasala, P Bhanumathi & Peethamabaram (who sings that hilarious finish)

If you(or anyone else) happen to know the lyrics for "thunbam nergayil" by Bharathidaasan can you post it here or in some other relevant thread?
