Guys & gals, I have already put this stuff in one of the therads. But, owing to the poor response, I am starting it as a topic. I am sure if some of us get together, we can sponsor an album of say, IR's great BGM pieces or something like that. I really miss listening to them. I am sure we could raise the funds over a period of time.
Interested people, please respond in this thread. We will have to plan out the details also.

Hi Guys!
I have been reading with interest your suggestions to promote IR's music and any plan that you come up with I'll do what I can to help you out. A couple of suggestions:
1. This thread has a lot of ideas thrown around and being discussed, but to a new reader it's really difficult to understand what's really been done so far. For starters is it possible to have a separate web-page for this project. We can have links for suggestions, comments, steps taken etc. A new web address costs around $150 a year. We can easily share the expense.
2. However much we promote NBW, HTNI etc, the Western audiences will be more receptive if IR has a track record in the west. I dont know how easy it will be, but can we lobby to get him to score the BGM for some English movies? The movie on Mandela being produced by a South African Indian, directed by Shekhar Kapoor. That is an example of a good target.

Great Idea ! Most of IR's songs were recorded and produced using the ECKO recording banner and then later on by AVM (for some of their films) and I remember seeing some Raja casettes also. Out of these barring AVM, I am not sure if the other 2 companies even have good master tapes for all the wonderful music this genius has composed.. I have heard some CDs and tapes of IR , reproduced recently and have painfully noticed that they lack that punch and clarity that the originals had when they were produced in 70s and 80s. Someone told me that ECKO recording belonged to IR himself and it is a shame that he has not protected his own assets well.. May be there is new technology available to digitize these , master them and patch up the scratches..If there is, then we could go that route.. technically revive the song files and republish them with necessary permissions.. use themes (such as different mood expressions etc.)
Another thought ( now that my blabbering is over..) , may be we can lobby to have IR tour the country and then capture that as an album (video / audio).. this will revive the popularity and give him visibility. I am positive, there is a lot he can add as value to the music of this country..

Guys,
To go along with these suggestions, I have posted a suggestion today at the "Whatever happened to Ilayaraaja's symphony?" thread. Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

We had better hurry up. Anyone going to Chennai soon and barge into Prashad studios? Someone in Chennai please do the homework and digging? Pursue, pursue. Here, I have sent emails to RPO, New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Sony, EMI and E! We can gauge from the response what this promotion work is doing.

Raja Fan,
Do us a favor , will you ?
Please forward all the E-mails that you have sent to the various sources to us DFers - or at least a few of us, so that we will send them on our own , with our names - a collective bunch of E-mails from many of us should have a better response .

Guys,
I need the following info to solicit BMG, Columbia and CDNow companies to add IR to their World Music catalog.
For "How to Name it?" and "Nothing But Wind", I need the following info:
-Record Company which issued the album with address and telephone/fax contact numbers. Serial number of the record is also very important to refer to their catalogs.
-Year of recording and release.
-Names of other musicians who contributed to these albums.
-A reproduction of the liner notes (any information about the artist(s) involved in the making of the album and biographical info or info about what inspired the project, etc. usually given in the back of the LP or in the CD booklet.)
With this info I will compile a letter to them. I will share here all correspondence I have with these companies. Thanks.

Udhaya,
The below given link takes you to the oriental records homepage where you can get the numbers for both the albums under the topic "fusion music".

Hope this helps

In the older version of HTNI, the cover used to carry the names of the instrument players. If I recall:
(1) Ouseppachchan
(2) V.S.Narasimhan (lead violinist)
There were many other (christian ? )names too for bass guitar, drums etc.. I am sorry to say I do not remember. The above two names stuck to my memory only because both are indepndent performers too. Infact the KM's mallu version ie "Aniyathipravu"'s music was done by Ouseppachchan.

Ms,
Thanks for your lead. Can you also give me URLs of sites that carry tracks from NBW or HTNI? Thanks.

i think the DFers should first buy NBW and HTNI before expecting others to buy it.

bb,
I agree. I bought the original tapes, they're in India. I have managed to get them taped from second generation tapes in the US, so all the info is missing. If I see the CDs here, I'll buy them for sure. I still buy $20 to $30 worth of TFM tapes and CDs every month.

udhaya, i posted that for the mere frustration that albums like nbw, htni, guru are not so well known even among DFers, leave alone others, and i must accept that i was peeved by ur questioning:-)

Udhaya,
I think you are aware of H & M enterprises based in Oklahoma. They have an extensive list of CDs on all the main languages (especially Mallu and tamil). The site is :
http://www.handm.com
If you are not able to find what you want here, you may try:
http://www.indiaplaza.com
(based in UK.)
or
http://www.webcom.com/raag/welcome.html
based in LA.
I have been buying the CDs from H&M and I find them giving me a good deal. I must admit, I hve not been able to get GURU despite my optimistic sustained efforts. But it is present in their listing. But I am not giving up...
You can buy your CDs at the above given links.

MS,
Thanks again for enlightening me about these sites.
bb,
I asked for the URLs of sites that carry the music of HTNI and NBW so that BMG, Columbia and CDNOW people can get a sampling of this music when I write them about it; it wasn't for my own initial listening. I have been listening to those tunes for years, I know those tunes by heart and can whistle them instantly. You don't have to worry about my familiarity with them. I'm not a hypocrite.

as reading through the responses, I know only a rich fan can make this happen. I am thinking like we shoud have a rich fan talk of a pop album with a couple of million bucks. This should be purely to make IR or KR convert some of IR's songs to western pop rhythm and the extra package is the interludes and preludes. Who is there, who is going to fund this personal project and approach IR? This is the best route to getting this project done. Any highly successful IR Fan here going through this forum?

Raja Fan,
Convert IRs songs to western pop rhythm ? We are thinking of arranging an Western Classical Music orchestra to play his composition and what the heck are you talking ? (said in a friendly tone, okay).
I am still trying to get in touch with the Women Philharmonic orchestra in San Francisco regarding this. I have already made a tape of NBW and HTNI. I will pass it to them and ask them if they would like to produce a composition by this guy.
Lets see how it goes.

Kiru:
I would advise Johnny, Mouna Raagam, EVK etc rather than HTNI, NBW. IMO, they are far superior in both orchestration and melody.
