  Almost all the songs in films directed by Bheemanna, beginning, as such, generally, with Pa or Paa, are great hits. Scores for them is mostly scored by Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy (before they parted company). The female voice was mainly that of Suseela's and the male voice TMS's and the lyrics were, as usual, Kannadasan's. Some of them were beautiful blend of folk and classical music (ex.,Malarndu malaraada), some lilting in Hindustani tunes (Mayangugiraal oru maadhu), some were ingenious productions based fully on pure raagas (Chandrodayam oru). They were very widely popular, but their originators, Kannadaasan or rather the cine producers did not believe that for songs to be hits with the masses, the lyrics had to touch the bottoms of obscenity (like Kuruvi kothia koyyapazham) or highly offensive to good taste (as though masses do not have a mind!), but they were still the times when lyricists and producers (and financiers) were men of some calibre wedded to the belief that it is possible, and necessary, to mould good taste in the masses. They were really not low-class fellows who, due to incompetence, believed, as most of them do now. The film music in Tamil at that time, like many of their Hindi counterparts, were highly capable classical musicians who turned to films for money on a wide audience base. When come those days!

  Sorry, in the above response by me, the last but one sentence inadvertently missed the latter part which I had intended to write: The full sentence is - They were really not low-class fellows, who due to sheer incompetence in their fields, believed, unlike their contemporaries today! - that it is necessary to pack all shit, malodorous stuff hidden in double-meaning third rate songs and some shapeless hotchpotch of ill-matched western and Indian melodies and harmonies. (Then last sentence. Then add:) One thinks that this breed of third-rate lyricists and shameless cine producers only goes well with the third-rate college students and school boys and antisocial politicians who are taking Tamil and India, down the hill economically, culturally and morally. No mathematicians, no scientists, no Nobel laureates, in such a third rate social collection.
