Has Hollywood in any way influenced the growth of the Indian Film Industry?

  Puliyai Paarthu Poonai soodu Poda muyarchi Seygirathu. As far as sensation and good stories are concerned, we are far ahead of all other Film Industries (Holly, Bolly...) Our tradition and cultured are our trump cards. But attitude of directors have changed now. In an attempt to resemble hollywood, they are losing their hold.

  As far as I am concerned there is no comparison between H/Wood and Indian Films; we are intellectually and technically way behind! As far as culture and stories go..yes..we are unique..but we conveniently exploit/copy Hollywood scripts, like Avvai Shanmughi. I find this pathetic as it is not ORIGINAL no matter how good the acting is. We lose values and quality trying to mass entertain, whereas HW has the power to set the 'appeal' standard by healthy competition within the industry.
  The audience is totally different so we should probably not even try to analyse this subject..bloody pathetic if you ask me.
  
  Sorry Sathya, I don't know what your intentions were. A short answer to this topic would be:
  Yes, Hollywood has certainly influenced our cinema right from the start but we are firmly stuck in our own values and culture that are not comparable to the west. (I'll stop here before it gets too touchy!!)

  We probably should stick to the influence of Hollywood in TFM.
  
  
  The picturisation of the song "Van Megham" in Punnagai Mannan is inspired by Singing in the Rain.
  
  Shanthi Nilayam was loosely based on Sound of Music.
  
  
  As mentioned in a different thread, the song "Roja Malar Venumaa" in the very old movie Raji En Kanmani is a note by note copy of the theme music of the Chaplin starrer "City Lights"

  The idea of the topic is to refresh the memory of surfers of historical facts since the inception of Tamil Film Industry. Way back in the 30's and 40's HW personalities like Dungan & Sundram directed and produced films starring legends like MGR & Raj Kapoor (the latter imitated Charlie Chaplin). Films like Sholay, Burning Train, Avvai Shanmugi, Indian, Vetri Vizha had HW imports for special effects. The Films are talked about till today. Therefore do we really need HW effects and technicians for the Indian Film Industry which is supposed to be the largest in the Universe?

  HellO all,
  
  I have been an avid movie enthusiast all my life, and after being in the US, have been exposed to quite a number of the greatest movies in aangilam also. Here, I am not referring to the old ones - a number of new ones are simply mindblowing. I dunnO if this is the place for a discussion like this, but what the hell - there has always been and will always be a huge gap between the issues that English movies portray as cmpared to Tamizh.
  
  To give you a few examples of the differences - Good Will hunting, Primal Fear, Taxi Driver, Dogma, Boiler room...just a few that strike me right now..but are way apart in what they portray. Tamil films seldom touch on relaistic feelings that one goes through.,.be it among friends or family, there's a whole lotta things we think about and go throguh that have never been forayed into by any Indian director. The psyche is an entire universe by itself, and only when we start making movies related to us...will we get to the level of comparison with Hollywood.
  
  Again, naaum oru mara Tamizhan thaan, but when it comes to Hollywood, they're a class apart - I certainly dig special effetcs movies, and am not talking about the Titanics and Armagedons here...but am talking about the acting, and scripts of movies that stay on your mind and groqw on you forever.
