What makes AR Rahman really special? Why does his music cause so much excitement and flurry?
What is the difference that AR Rahman offers that no one else offers.

"His musical ability to confine the whole world's air in his flute; his glowing inner peace; the simplicity of a mother is what I saw in him ."
- lyricist Ilayakamban (Dinakaran, June 2000)
"The best part about singing for Rahman is the freedom he gives the singer. Even for my first song he let me sing the way I was comfortable with, eventhough I was a nobody then."
- singer Harini (Kumudam, June 2000)
"The total submission of his (A.R.Rahman) life for the cause of music; his thirst for creating not any chaff but only grains appeals to me the most!"
- Vairamuthu (Dinakaran, Apr 13 2000)
"I have learnt many things from many music directors. If you single out A.R.Rahman,I can quote his relentless labour, high enthusiasm, and commitment to the tasks at hand. He would never compromise on the quality of a song. He is quality-conscious and individualistic."
- music director Harris Jayaraj (2001)

Narthaki Online interviews
R Visweswaran, the Musician / Composer
http://www.narthaki.com/info/intervw/intrvw3.html
How did you get involved with R D Burman, M S Viswanathan and film music?
In '74, I came into contact with R D Burman who took me to Bombay and gave me entry into Bombay film music, an experience I cherish greatly. I have played guitar for R D Burman, C Ramachandra, Rajesh Roshan, Lakshmikant-Pyarelal etc. I have had the good fortune to play accompaniment to Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Unfortunately, though I have heard Rafi sing in a recording, I never got to play for him. It was during the Bombay film recordings that I met the santoor maestro “avatara purusha” Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, my great guru and revered influence in my life. Thus started my training in santoor. He urged me to leave everything else and concentrate on santoor alone, which put me in a great dilemma. I was shunting between Madras and Bombay at that time. In '76, M S Viswanathan spotted my talent and to this day, I play for him. And I love to play even today for A R Rehman who is absolutely wonderful and takes the best out of an artiste.

MIF, IR did tell that in one of DD interviews.
The interview threw IR in a very bad light.
The interviewer was a then famous personality in DD. (Not sure of the name though)

DD interview came on depavali of dalapathi release. Where does roja come in to picture?. Other interview I remeber never has anything about rahman. He never said that anything about Roja. Raja has made general comments on trend. Just yesudas, lata usualy does these days, but never a personnel comment on any one.

IR would have never said that!! They like to get
"Kuttu from Mothirakkai". It is not easy. Even VM didn't get that Kuttu. He is as much genius as a critic. He must be a tired man after tireless days of working for 16 years nonstop. Everybody has to reach a saturation point. I am glad that IR is not scoring music much anymore. He has used all the possible tunes one can come up with his in his movies which makes it very difficult for other MDs to find some decent tunes. All the current MDs grew listening to IR music. Only thing that has improved in the 90s and 00s is the quality of recording. Other than that the standars is down now. MTV culture has changed the perspective of people's view on music. Like fast food these fast beat songs has become the order of the day. There was no cable TV in the 80s.
Now to reach the audience some MDs enter into cheap tactics of creating music resembling fast beat pop songs and rap songs. They exploit the weakness of audiences whose tastes change time to time. But certain people won't succumbe to that cheap tricks. That's why Kamal still loves IR.
Kamal likes to imitate all the hollywood movies in every aspect. Photography, kissing scene, etc... But he has never changed his musical sense. He knows more than anybody else IR is the best Music Director India has ever produced. This is my humble opinion.

"It's not enough to be successful. It's important to attempt something new. Rahman's contribution to film music will never be forgotten. He has given a new dimension and understanding to sound."
- lyricist Javed Akhtar (Filmfare, Feb 2001)
"I think he (Rahman) is the most consummate composer that I know of in the world. His music comes from the characters and is an extension of them. I think he is the best".
- Deepa Mehta, film maker (Nov 1998)
"People become immediately entranced by whatever he composes. Rahman is a phenomenon. He's young and talented. And he has his fingers on the pulse of the young generation. My hopes (for the future) are pinned on A R Rahman."
- singer/composer/lyricist Bhupen Hazarika (Screen, 2000)

"I think he (A.R.Rahman) is an absolute genius and is one of the few music directors who completely knows what he is doing. It's an absolute pleasure working with him as he is a cool and modest guy."
- singer/composer Shankar Mahadaven (Rediff, July 1999)
"A R Rahman not only gave me the break (in Dil Se), he taught me a lot of techniques in composing music arrangement and recording. He was the one to impress upon the need to be technically perfect before any
producer could be expected to invest in you."
- singer-composer Sukhvinder Singh (Deccan Herald, 2000)

MIF: i too have heard this quote being attributed to IR. Dunno whether its true.
Another person who called ARR a OFW was lyricist Sameer. (who too like others, now seems too have different opinion as he recently worked with Rahman for TLOBS and was heard showering heavy duty praises on Rahman in all his recent interviews)
Yet another big "FAN" of Rahman is composer Nadeem of Nadeem-Shravan duo.
Here's a sample!
"Rahman is at his worst now! As for Taal, I would give it 70 out of 100. Our film Pardes would get a 100 on 100!"

Kum_Laden :
I beleive that You are a IR fan / okay aleast not a ARR basher.
It is nice to see people like you who critisize some unhealthy, unwarranted comments about ARR from some non sense people. This is really good and healthy. I believe that people like you are there in both sides. I critisize (look for ways to critisize) IR because some scrupulous elements comment on ARR unnecessaryly. I am very sorry for that but I only know a tit for a tat
