  Kamal, it is not correct to conclude like that eventhough the answer is YES.
  
  Most of the Asha/Lata songs are just duets or love songs or pathos for normal heroine.
  
  But Janaki had sung for old character, child character, and also with different voices. Surely SJ's versatility is more and better than Lata.

  I missed one point where SJ is better than Lata/Asha.
  
  SJ had sung in different languages. Her pronounsation was 90% proper. I need not tell about Lata and Asha in this case.

  I am a diehard Janaki Fan,but her Hindi songs are terrible because of the accent. Go to www.sjanaki.com and listen to her Hindi sai bhajans if you wish

  Please - Janaki is nowhere compared to Asha or Lata or Susheela or Vani or LR Eswari. She has a terribly screechy voice, which has deteriorated so much today that she renders only junk. Indian for life - please stop this silly thread

  But I am a fan of SJ - being a fan does not mean she is the BEST. Vani Jairam is more verstaile than SJ and is better in semiclassical. Even PS and LRE are much better.

  actually both sjanaki and vani jayaram have some similarities.. i wud classify SJ as not sharp but sort of a diluted voice...(where sharp is swarnalatha) and vanijayaram has a problem of being "keechi muchu"... she sings like a cat cought inbetween a cycle wheel. although i am not sayin VJ's voice is bad .. its too sqealy for my taste..
  
  My most favorite song is "roja poo vadi vanthathu.." and that is sung by SJ
  
  but i hated IR for using her in "oru naal antha oru naal" a fine song totally usuitable tp SJ's voice... she really looked old in that song...
  
  with regds Asha and SJ ... I think asha is a better singer...but thats a personal opinion.. but asha's voice modulations is good. she can sound sexy and young.. SJ... there is something abt SJ that doesnt jell well. I cant put my finger on it but...
  
  oh well... swarnalatha i guess is now the best Play Bak singer in TFM... thats all... certainly deserves more than what she is getting right now.. and i was really sorry to see her wasted in hindi... "hai rama yeh kya hua..." was simply superb.....

  S.Janaki is certainly the most versatile that we have, but sadly her voice is not very good. But if it comes to real spirit in singing, only Asha and Geeta (Dutt/Roy) have/had it, in fact Geeta much more than Asha.

  When it comes to tonal quality, SL is a few notches above all the singers. But she fails at high notes and struggles. Her span is not great.
  
  When it comes to span, SJ is easily the best. but, though she does not struggle for high notes, her tonal quality fades in the higher notes
  
  Vani Jeyaram is the best when delivering it in the higher notes effectively and effortlessly. But she is too loud and soothing romantic numbers like "inji iduppazagaa" are not her forte. susheela can be attributed the same factors.
  
  Thsu we comes to the conclusion that Chitra is the best :-)

  My take is that Asha has set a good precedent for SJ ..Asha's voice and tonal quality not to mention her expressiveness are impeccable..she can deliver romantic, soothing numbers, cabaret numbers and classical numbers with ease..She is really the tragedy queen of HFM..and I believe many MDs today would be guilty of not giving her enough opportunities..
  
  I believe SJ is as versatile as Asha..only that SJ got plenty of numbers her way to prove it since she was the dominating playback singer in the late 70s and 80s..

  is totally REJECTEd. the only thing that is a major weak point with chitra is that she cannot sing high ppitched tones. her voice breaks badly...
  
  if u dont believe me please listen to "anjali anjali" song from duet and " uyire.. uyire.." from bombay and you will know..

  Guys when U r supposed to compare two legends of different regions ...Its tough job..But i surprised how u deviate from the topic and landing to chitra,SL,Lata...
  
  C'ing to comparision btwn these two.S Janaki is simply superb.She can produce any kind of feeling with her tone..
  
  she proved it in all south indian languages(This is her limitation...B'cos she is a gift from god only for this region...)
  
  C'ing to Asha she had the image of singing husky songs ...She was really gave the justice for them .With that image she put limitation on her capabilities..
  
  But still today Asha is producing good numbers ..It is her discipline and control on her health point of view...

  as usual the northies..(they always think they r best) ignore the golden voice of s.janaki....
  asha is a good singer ..but while compare to s.janaki she is only 50%....

  Hey, again a topic leading to a stalemate. There was an earlier topic like this comparing RDB-AB and IR-SJ which became so digressive that it led to a IR vs ARR bash thread. Again this stupid comparison. Asha and SJ are born versatiles in their own right. Come on!, who can say SJ or AB is better than the other. While AB has sung under all the extensive MD's and with other great male Singers in the north, SJ has done it similarly in the south. Take any quality you would like to compare : eg. versatility, no. of hit songs, quality in high pitch, ease in singing difficult songs, rendition of classical or western. Both have made an impeccable mark. Both have large no. of fans. SJ may have large number of fans in TFM, and greater voices praising her in TFM, so do AB has in the north (BTW, I am a Southie).Just dont start a comparison, for the sake of it.
