SPB the greatest singer that India had ever produced

  spb is the greatest one around in tfm. new singer comes and go but not spb. look what happen to hari, unni k ,unni m, shanker, udit. top MD still engage him e.g. ARR in BABA, YSR in Kathal Rajyam and April Mathathil, Mani Sharma in Youth, Bharadwaj in Gemini, IRR in Friends. Even newcommer like karthick, harish, tippu, balram around spb still maintain his position as
  great singer. can any one forget his melodies for rajini,kamal, mohan and surya. kathal thepam, peesa kudathey, athi malai, ilaya nila, and mun paniya.

  Agreed SPB is a great singer .. one of a kind and has given some excellent and outstanding songs.. but does that make him the greatest singer ever produced by india .. answer is a very assertive NO.
  
  You ask SPB .. he too will say that . You might say its due to the humble nature of the great singer ...which is also true but he too says at many times that he also thinks Mohd. Rafi was the greatest singer india has ever produced. That was some class voice.
  
  SPB and KJY would come very close. Unfortunately but for their distinct way of pronouncing few words they could have done much better in hindi and become a bigger name in that industry where you had clowns like Kumar Sanu rooling the roost once.

  that is his personal opinion, that does not make M.rafi the greatest, Rafi was one of the greats, agreed, but greatest????
  
  SPB has also said Unni Krishnan is a great carnatic singer, that does not make Unni the greatest Carntic singer!, KJY & BMK, MS.Subulakshmi are the real legends when it comes to carnatic, Unni is very good, but no where near KJY/BMK, in terms of carnatic singing & No singers are up to the standard of SPB, when it comes to play back singing!

  Its ur ignorance to Hindi film music that makes u feel that SPB is the greatest playback singer produced by india. Mohd. Rafi was much better any day. I gues you haven't heard the diff. varieties of his songs else you too would have said the same. SPB himself will never dare to say that he is the best.   Top notch song...beats any of Rafi's songs..as for Kishore...SP bala upstaged him the the songs For Sagar..although Kishore was excellent too!

  there is a faint chuckle which is difficult to pick out in the line

  By the way S P Baalu had sung a Hindi song for the music director Naoshaad, much earlier than "Ik Dooje Ke Liye". It was perhaps in 1973. Have you heard it?

  "teri paayal mere geet" is around 1994, wherein SPB sang with Naushad. Thats the only time he has worked with Naushad. Naushad has worked a lot with Hariharan though.
  
  SPB started in Hindi films with ek duuje ke liye -1981-82 I think. Maybe he has sung for some Hindi films dubbed from Tamil before that.

  SPB is certainly not the greatest male singer India has ever produced. He is one of the greats no doubt about it.
  
  Raghu, i've been reading what you have been writing in this forum for a long time. You are basically coming to a conclusion that SPB is the best without listening to Rafi i feel. If other artists mention that others are better than them, who are we to judge. I think other artists have more knowledge than us when it comes to singing aspects. It is not because of humility that they mention this. If SPB mentions UK is a good carnatic artist it ofcourse doesn't mean he is the greatest.....SPB didn't say that did he ??. He did say though that Rafi is the greatest and so have many others. So if another artist says SPB is the greatest, will you take it as humility just like you do when SPB mentions about another singer or will you take it as a fact. I think other artists judging other artists is one of the best ways to determine a good singer because they have more knowledge than us when it comes to music. If it was all about humility than there would be no point in praising anyone. Also, Swami (an 81 year old person who appeared last year on this forum)who has had close personal associations with SPB, Rafi, Lata, Asha, KJY, BMK, Manna Dey, KK, PS etc. mentioned that Rafi is the greatest out of all the males based on his experiences with all singers.....and he is south indian you know !!. I have heard many many of SPB's south indian songs from my friend who is tamil. I have a whole collection of SPB's SI songs in my home. Though i don't understand the language I can still see how an artist sings through his style. Language is not a key unless you are talking about expression. And singing in Hindi/Urdu is harder than singing in a south indian language because there are many more "tha", "fa", "cha", "ha" etc which take away the breath faster. (This is a point mentioned by many artists). So when it comes to expression in hindi songs SPB is not as good as he is in south indian songs.....which is a point Swami mentioned. (I rate Swami's opinions high because he has great musical knowledge as well as is associated with many musical clubs throughout India and has had personal associations with all the greats of Indian Film Music). Now i know you can't compare SPB's hindi songs with Rafi's hindi songs but you can talk about Rafi's HS with SPB's SI songs. And if expression in Hindi/Urdu is harder than SI languages than Rafi is ahead in this aspect since he could express these words unbelievably.
  Now coming to my opinion I like SPB's HS more than his SI songs because I feel in his HS he had more of a chance to let his voice out becasue of the flexibility of the words in Hindi/Urdu.
  Anyone could have said SPB is greater but almost every artist points towards Rafi. Are they paid to do it or are they doing it out of their knowledge which as I mention again is more than ours definetly. By the way, SPB's sister used to fight in her home because she wanted to marry Rafi and SPB kept on telling her how impossible it was. She says she hasn't seen such expressive singing from anyone yet other than Rafi. So if SPB's own sister also refers to Rafi as the greatest and not her own brother then I think you should do some research on it yourself. Why don't you email SPB and tell him to write back to you on the intracies of singing and why he feels Rafi is the greatest based on his singing knowledge and then you can have a discussion with him that he has all that which YOU feel he does. Also if every artist mentions Rafi as the pinnacle, why don't you try hearing all the varieties of his songs and not just some songs from a website and then come to a conclusion. By the way, Mohd. Rafi has been bestowed with almost all the titles of playback singing ranging from "Saatwan Sur" to "Aawaz ka Jaudagar". Tell me why ?. Why do you think Rafi is the only singer to be refered to as SAHAB by one and all in the industry.

  Maybe that is the reason why we don't have Mehdi Hassan's choicest Thiruppugazh, or Ghulam Ali's selections from Kandhar shasti kavacham - must be too easy for them :-)
  
  Maybe SPB told Sailaja, "I know you want to get married to Rafi. But he has been dead for a few years now. And you know that our family does not practice necrophilia" :-)

  You dont know Tamil(leave aside Telugu+Kannada) and you pass sweeping statements about SPB's emoting! Same applies to all other renowned personalities you mentioned.
  I dont want to make blanket judgements here but all I can say is that SPB didnt sing as much in Hindi as in Tam/Tel/Kan...there are more music lovers in India who understand Hindi more than TTK..if they could comprehend TTK, SPB's reputation would have skyrocketed several times over.
  BTW, my PC with a 128MB RAM crashes frequently, not to speak of using an octagenarian's retentive capacity as a basis!
  NOM by the way! My motives are light-hearted.
