Any praise for GangaiAmaran's songs...

I am not sure whether GM's talent as a lyricist has been discussed. Folks, believe he has written really fabulous songs most of them that suits the song situation perfectly. Ofcourse one can not rule out his talent as an allrounder in playing lot of instruments and enough capability for a good MD(but shadowed by his brother IR).

My vote for No. 1 ranking is Sindhiya Venmani from Poonthotta Kavalkaran. "Sindhiya Venmani Sippiyil Muttachu" - ultimate euphematic analogy of how a female conceives and what a elaborate way of informing one's wife's pregnancy in just couple of words!

  ga has done music direction for a few memorable movies including vazhve maayam (some songs were remakes of the telugu original movie), a movie in which there was this song (daddy daddy o my daddy unnai kandale anandame) starring baghyaraj and saritha and some more.
  
  i felt that he became an MD by accident (as IR was not available) some have likened him to mohan of MD (remember mohan is called poor man's kamal) ga was poor man's ir but he never made it his sole preoccupation. he produced movies, directed and continued to keep writing songs for his brother. with this lack of focus on any activity, he became a jack of many trades and master of none

  GA as a lyricist has done a decent job in
  senthoorap poovE.. his debut in 16-vayathinilE. After this song became a hit, many directors wanted songs (in their films) to start with name of some flower. Even director Mahendran insisted Kannadaasan to write with a rare flower's name; Though Kannadaasan was not very happy to get "instructions" for a pallavi from the director, he rendered "senthaazham poovil" for mullum malarum. He later met GA somewhere and teased (ofcourse, with appreciation)GA for changing every lyricist to start with a flower in pallavi. (I read this in one of GA's interviews, many years back)
  
  The other good lyrics of GA : thamthana thamthana thaaLam varum for Puthiya VaarppugaL. GA said he took 4 days to complete the lyrics. Likewise, he penned siRu ponmaNi asaiyum..athil theRikkum puthu isaiyum.. for kallukkuL EEram. Both the lyrics stand apart, in my personal opinion. (Like many, I too thought they were penned by kannadaasan, for a while.)
  
  Another puthumai done by GA was for his enga ooru paattukkaaran in which he wrote all the songs with the title of the film ("paattukkaaran") appearing somewhere in every song. Has anyone noticed it?
  
  I like enna mAnamuLLa poNNu-innu maruthaiyilE kEttAga.. for "chinna pasanga naanga". And slightly different from his style in unnaal mudiyum thambi..thambi for "unnal mudiyum thambi". Good lyrics.

  Guys, GA wrote "Poongathave Thaazhthiravai", and "Vaigarayil Vaigaikarayil", before the latter song I had never heard the term Vaigarai in a song. So, believe it, GA is no slight songwriter. Even his dappanguthu songs were very situational, humorous and catchy (16 vayathinilae, Rosaappu Ravikkaikari songs).

  Udaya: Is "PoongathavE" penned by GA? I thought
  it is by VM. Good song.
  
  I like GA's voice also.
  E.g. "Solai pushpangalE" with PS. IN all his
  movies as MD, i see lot of IR's style. I
  really wonder he really did the compositions
  (on par with IR.) (e.g) 'kannA kannA nee engE
  radhA engE nAn angE'. vAzhve mAyam songs also
  has rich orchestration. I dunno! I believe
  IR and GA are like SONY and AIWA.

  His voice suits well with that type of song.
  
  In terms of BGM, I would say he did not succeed. He has only few successful movies for his credit. Loot what happened recently, his new venture, 'Poonjolai'. It wasn't even released.

  GA as a MD has given good melodies too. Songs in sattam, vAzhvE mAyam are good. Other numbers like: kAthal vaibOgamE..(film: suvar illAtha chiththirangaL), poongARRE..intha poNNu.. (film: maNNukkEththa poNNu), vAnamE..mazhaimEgamE.. (film: madhu malar) etc., There is a great song in film nALellAm pourNami; there are two versions of that song: poongARRE..poongARRE..pOnavaLa poonguyilap pAththiyA (pathos version) and neethAnA..neethAnA..nikkavachchup pAkkuRE (duet); both are great songs. Has anyone heard these songs?
  
  There is another good song in film ninaikkath therintha manamE. The song is kaNNukkum kaNNukkum kAthal.. (KJJ solo). Was it not GA, the MD for this film?

  1. Andhi varum nerammm... Vandadhoru raagammm... Ethetho Mogam... Theeratho Thaagammm from Thooral Ninu Pocchu is another wonderful song written by GA.
  
  2. Kalyana Thenila from Mounam Samadham is a decent lyrics by GA. Are you guys not surprised it is GA? It is much different from his songs which usually contain Madurai, Mana Madurai etc.,
  
  3. Povoma Oorgolam is another so called 'etharthamana' song that goes well with the film situation.

  Just for your info folks about GA on how frank he is. Once he told that the people will say the following about him as MD...
  
  1. If the song is really good, then they will say that I took the rought music sheets used by IR and composed the song.
  
  2. If any of the IR songs are average, then they will say that IR would have asked GA to do that.

  Mayavi avargale, "Mannil Indha Kaadhal" was written by Paavalar Varadharaajan, IR and GA's elder brother.
  Another good movie with GA's music (and lyrics too I think)is a Mohan-Rekha movie by R.Sundarrajan. It had the following SPB-SJ songs:

  "Paadal Nan paada"

  NALellAm pourNami starred Prabhu (with Rekha ?), and had the song " NeethAnA nesamthAnA" It was in GA's music.

  I checked the album, which is titled 'Yesudas Yesterday & today' released by Oriental Records Inc. For your Info., Oriental Records bought Echo and have the copy rights for all Raja's music up to 'Chinna Thambi' from 80's. When Raja opened his own company, Oriental Records did not have the rights, so they shut down the business.
  Usually Oriental Rec. does not make a mistake. Can you make sure that this is the case?

  Thanks for GA's debut info and also the details from his interview. Though GA has written so many "low class" (as he claims) songs, I like the nativity touch in his songs, though he might have got inspirations from nAttuppuRap pAdalagaL
  
  Another song by GA which was objected by sensor board at that time and later changed was mathani..mathani..machchAn illaiyA.. for kadal mEEngaL. I think the records still carry the same words ("kozhunthA..kozhunthA..") but in the film, the lines were changed ("kumarA..kumarA.." in the re-recording.
