Ok Siva..think like dis.
ARR is your newly appointed cook. At the beginning he made you Dosai and Itli..you enjoyed. Then he switched to Rotti, Idi appam etc etc u felt more good.Suddenly some pizza huts ( Deva, Haris, YSR, KR, Imaan) appear around ur house and u have started going there regularly. You dont eat at home anymore. One day you had Baba Bajanai at home and you wanted to eat from your cook. He came up with same good Rotti etc. But ur tongue is ruined by pizzas. You spit at ur cook. Its not his fault. He should give you plain maa ( powder)

It is a baba movie songs review. Why do we have to drag all the MDs into this. Just enjoy music. Not music directors. I like good songs. "Nadodi Pattu Padi" was scored by Akosh in Harichandra. I liked it. "Pulveli Pulveli" by Deva was good. Let us not be prejuidiced. We shouldn't throw mud on other MDs. Even though i am an ARR fan, he is yet to achieve 10% of what Illayaraja has achieved. Illayaraja has scored for more than 800 movies. Rahman has scored barely for 300 songs.
You are talking about 800 movies vs 300 songs.
Gross mismatch in comparison. How many songs have been scored by ARR suits Classical Dance.
Has ARR scored one score that matches the following songs?
1) Om Namachivaya from Salangai Oli
2) Kavithai Kelungal
3) Azagu Malarada
4) Nada Vinodangalum
5) Naanor Ponnoviyam Kanden
6) Adal Kalayie Devan Thandadu
... list goes on.
He has explored deep down inside the musical ocean. ARR has barely touched the top of the water. I am a sensible ARR fan. Rest are not. DOn't say Baby cassettes were sold like hot cakes.
Thousands of people didn't even see the cover before buying it. And also it is not a good measure how good the song is. Karagattakaran ran for 365 days. Salangai Oli ran for 200 days. According to your argument Karagattakaran is better than Salangai Oli. Just stick to the talk about quality of song. Let us face it. Most of the ARR fans look like running for cover not being able to accept the truth. I am an ARR fan. The good thing about ARR was, he used to work within his limitations very well. Now he is trying to break free his limitations. Results are very ordinary. I wish he goes back to the basics.
I am not against trying to be unconventional. But still it has to follow certain rules. ARR is trying bend the rules too much. He comes up short in his effort. I am not against ARR fans. I am also an ARR fan. But i am a fan of pre-KK era.
His songs somewhat seem to be repetitive. Tunes are so familiar. Baba songs are very badly composed. I am sure Rajini generally doesn't care about music much. But certainly SM voice doesn't suit Rajini as much as UN voice didn't suit Rajini. Few reasons i can come up with why it is such a disappointment. He might have focussed on BD. ( Since it was alredy scored in tamil it shouldn't have distracted him). He might not have been able to focus fully since he was in England.
(He could have very well turned down. But ARR cannot afford to turn down, RK and MR movies. Because he lives by them). ARR might want to leave Tamil field as he can make more bucks in hindi with less effort. (It is quite possible).
ARR might have had a misunderstanding with RK.
(It is little farfetched. But possible).

Hi folks
I decided to post this article in two threads that have seen the worst of IR-ARR verbal wars in recent times. The Ivan review page and Baba review page.
I think its time, people realise that these two sectionso f fans, will rarely find a common platform.Neither is to be blamed. But both need to be told to refrain from using ugly language.
IR Fans, I am one of you. But I do believe at times, the Maestro also falters. His music is not as consistent as it used to be. But then, there are occasional gems like Apdi Pakradhunna and Manase, which are fantastic. ARR Fans,You guys also need to realise, that IR fans, have grown listening to SPB and Chitra and SJ and PS and KJY singing to their true potential with minimal music to accompany. The voice had so much importance. Not anymore. today the onus is on, instrumentation to its maximum and not the natural ones but more of the synthesizer kind. Its not bad, but its a different genre.
At no point, I repeat is ARR going to match the rustic and simple melody of IR. And, in the same vein, at no point is IR going to match the tunes of the youth of today who want western music and the beats and trance music.
But as music lovers, we ought to discern and comment. IR Fans, need to accept the Maestro fails at times, like in Devan.ARR fans, you ought to accept that sometimes ARR is so disinterested in tfm that he gives crap to us and we end up lapping it up greedily. For heavens sake, Star and Jodi and few others needed to be thrashed out.. A music director needs to say, he will NOT copy his own tunes. how much ever his director insists. His individuality is compromised. And giving a stupid reason of lack of time is crap.
At his peak, IR was churning 20 movies a yr, each with a unique magical score. So giving a reason of lack of time etc is stupid.
At the same time IR fans, the Maestro needs to be more choosy and give more chance to SPB..
i mean, they have produced songs that r still unbeatable..Trying to also produce techno music is not a good idea. His forte is simple hummable scores and his BGM. He should stick to it..
Hope this makes you guys understnad that fighting out personal wars is stupid.. Discuss music..dont discuss ppl and use expletives..you demean urselves a lot by it..

Music fan. I agree with you in large parts. If i am right he scored for 50 movies a year for three consecutive years in the early 80s. I am sure no one in this world could have done that. I am really proud of him. Given his humble background his achievement looks all the more monumental. If you start digging into Illayaraja's works you will keep digging gold. So let us not make a direct comparison with IR and ARR. IR is a composer in every sense. His background music concept is still revolutionary. ARR is great in his own right. He introduced new age genre type of songs. Melodies like.. Vellai Mazhai, Ennavale, Anjali Anjali. He introduced the concept of high quality recording. Over a period he lost his originality to technology. Overdependence of technology will blunt your brain. Ideally he should compose with Harmonium and satisfy himself before even touching keyboard. But he has not explored many areas. Being in the ad field he knew the pulse of the people what would satisfy them. It is much like selling a product through skillful marketing.
As long as the product is good it would be ok. His aggressive strategy to promote his albums is something to be learnt by other MDs. IR never cared for marketing his products. The quality of his music took care of it. That's why songs like
"Kunguma chengamalam" from unknown movie 'ARADHANAI' (TO MANY PEOPLE) is still well appreciated. I recently rented that movie and saw it just for that song. I personally feel Vairmuthu is one main reason for TFM failure. Not because of his lyrics. But because of his attitude. He spoilt the image of IR telling everyone in the world that IR is arrogant and all.
VM is one reason why BR took off from IR. Balachander and MR picked up a fight soon. VM was adding fuel to fire with every person in the field. He is like a snake. Atleast IR is very honest and forthright. He is not cunning like VM.
Now he has picked up a fight with ARR. He should be banned from Tamil Movies for his third rate attitude. In a way the competition is good. But as long as ARR keeps improving it is good for tamil music. But unfortunately he keeps declining.
He should stop scoring catchy tunes like arabikadloram, take it oorvasi, chaya chaya, muqabla. He should try beyond that. Otherwise he will go down as short term wonder in the history of TFM. His affair with Hindi is increasing where anything is accepted as music. Sona kitne sona re was no.1 song in TV. So ARR doesn't really have to worry much. Anu Mallik is a prime example.
There are no R.D.Burman and S.D.Burman anymore.
ARR has to put less effort in hindi movies. I suspect he will permanently move to Hindi movies.
ARR fans will have nothing to discuss in TFM forum but Hindi songs. Very sad.
