Nation Awards for the year 1998

National Awards for the year 1998 has been announced and Tamil film draws a blank.
Mammooty gets the best actor award and Shabna Azmi gets the best actress awards.

  I also agree that vishal may deserve it. I have not seen heard the godmother album. But he is theonly MD in hindi, who thrives to be original and creative. So obviously he is commercial failure there :-).
  Once he said that he wanted to score music like dil se. Specially the song 'chaya chaya', he commented about how different it was from typical hindi songs, no use of violins and typical instruments. When all other MDS criticize ARR with foolish remarks, but still shamefully copy his songs, he really stood out.

  AR is not a good music director.If we compare him with IR(The Musical Genius),AR is far away in music knowledge.A small child also know that AR music is a copy from western countries.AR is really do not brought new style in tamil film music.AR always copy music from our IR and Other countries.AR do not have abilities to create own tunes.Than how we can accept him as a MD.I'm really happy to say this because there is nobody can replace IR.IR is already achieve everything.What a genius.IR is the excample to upcoming MD.

  Sridhar and Hari: You're right - Vishal definitely deserves it. I was convinced of his talent when I listened to the Maachis theme. He is much better than other HFM MDs.
  
  If Ajay Devgan's award does not make much sense, Housefull's award makes even little sense. Its a lousy movie.

  I feel Ajay Devgan was good in Zakhm. He is a good actor - he was good in Hum Dil DE chuke Sanam too. But its debatable if he deserves a national award for Zakhm!!

  Vishal is a great MD, and I think the award was well deserved.
  
  I notice disappointment among some readers that Southern Indian artistes hardly got any recognition apart from Mammooty and that too for a shared award. Often, one shouldn't look just at the end results; the nominees are also usually worthy of praise. Any prominent and deserving nominees?

  one more thing is mammotty has crossed (or may be touched) kamalhassan in mumber on n. awards. He realy deserves that, as anyday he is better than the later (I just feel so). I think he got earlier for vv katha, madhilugan and one more movie.
  
  I thought vishal should have got for machiss, but
  he must have missed it for BG score, good thing he got it now, and good MD is appreciated.

  NO WAY Mamooty has crossed Kamal in number of National awards, it's only Mamooty's SECOND NA for a best actor, Kamal has got it for THREE movies already.

  I beg to differ. mammootty doesn't have the versatility of Kamal. In fact I feel Mohanlal's a better actor.Also , Comedy is not MM 's cup of tea.
  
  All he can do is some serious roles like what he did in amaram or madhilugaL or some "officer" kinda characters like inspector balram or a CBIDK (There r some people who don't like MM simply bcos of his character's dominance in a movie).

  The results of this year's National Awards is quite disturbing. Almost all categories have been won by (or rather bought by?) Hindi films. And IMO, quite a few are undeserving... like Ajay Devgan and Alka Yagnik. I have not seen GodMother and can't comment on that. I'm sure it's a good movie, going by the clippings aired on TV.
  
  And the award for "the movie providing wholesome entertainment" looks like a category proposed to please the likes of Yash Chopras and the Yash Jogars and 'chamchas' like Subbirami Reddy are responsible for that. There are very good Malayalam movies that entertain, provide popular entertainment. Well, does it have to be a Hindi film all the time?
  As for Ajay devgan having to share the award ith Mammootty, well, what can I say? Kaalam Kettu POchu. I have seen the film and it was one of Mahesh Bhat's so-called autobiographies. It was painful, true to its name the audience was subjected to 3 hours of torture and injury!!! The only silver lining was Maragatha Mani's music. (God knows why he has to change his name to MM Kreem in Hindi!!! Screem! By the way, I think he's the only MD who has three different names in 3 different languages.. In Telugu, he's called Keeravani)
  Coming to Zakhm...
  Just hamming and shouting a mouthful of anti-communal dialogues with a deadbody in hand is according to the panel, great acting. Going by that standard, Sarat Kumar and Devaraj must be getting it every year.

  National awards are always disturbing, to some one or the other; so there is nothing new this year.
  
  Last year, it was Tamil films which 'bought' them, now it's some one else's turn.

  I think last year also tamil film's didnt do well.

  Nation awards are always controversial. They used to consider only the so called art movies ( with no songs), and awarded them for no reason, and completely ignoring non-art movies ( with songs), which were better technically and in all other aspects. To me, most of malayalam movies in the 80s were very good compared to any of those pseudo art movies. Another fixed mind set was giving music awards to movies with classical background or for art movies. For last few years it was changing for good reason ( from roja ), but still the problem is finding the right kind of selection committe with out any prejudicies and the people who know what they are awarding. Until then, it is a arm chair game.
