Lovely song and write-up! A veritable treat not only for MSV-music admirers but, probably, just about everybody! I particularly recall welcoming this melodious number with great joy during those "penurious" (in terms of musical popularity, that is) times for MSV. A simple song devoid of extravagant, out-of-place, orchestra. A lilting melody, nevertheless. Something to cherish for the ages. Great choice!

adhukkula oru varusham aayiduchaa? pozhudhu ponadhe theriyala. thanks saravanan.
I vaguely remember having heard a male voice singing it. maybe it was JC's version. but it didn't sound like a sad bit. maybe a copied version!

what a superb song. typical 70s MSV's child.
till now i thought it was sung by Vani Jayaram.
it is indeed sad to note that kalyaNi menon is one among those talented singers who didnt get much chances in TFM.
Thanks Sara once again for the treat with a gem of a song and equally splendid write-up.

Thanks friends! It is your enthusiastic responses that made it possible. SOTD thread has had many healthy discussions and analytical posts, and has been an enriching experience for me too!
bb, thank you for giving me this wonderful opportunity, and for your constant encouragement.
And thanks also to sk for patiently teaching me mp3 conversion, without which I wouldn't have been able to send the songs :)

Song of the Day: ninaiththu ninaiththu from 7G Rainbow Colony.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/ninaithu.rm
- 7G Rainbow Colony is the latest film by Selvaragavan, who directed Kaadhal KondEn. Music by Yuvan Shankar Raja, Sung by Shreya Ghoshal. Lyrics by Na.Muthukumar. The hero is producer A.M.Rathnam's son, Ravi Krishna, while the heroine is Soniya Agarwal.

- Some of the comments there:
'Ninaithu Ninaithu Parthal' (female version) song is the best song in recent times IMHO. very impressed with it. Super music, nice lyrics ( hats off to Na.Muthukumar) and very sweet voice ( not to mention very bad pronounciation! ) people who havent listened to it, please give a try, you will love it!
I liked 'ninaiththu ninaithu' song very much - But I will give it only negative marks because of Shreya's 'tamil' :((( What Na. Muthukumar was doing when his lyrics murdered by this female ? :(((
"Ninaithu ninaithu": I heard only shreya's version. Few pronunciation mistakes are visible in this song as Yuvan has given importance to the lyrics. It would be too good if music directors pay little attention to save tamizh. Except that, the net outcome of this song is heart stealing.
Ninaithu Ninaithu - shreya goshal (5/5) -pick of the album melody wise-
The song has great meaningful lyrics that are rendered soulfully by shreya. The intro piano piece is excellent. If i had to choose another person to create a piece using piano other then ARR i'd go with YSR. After the singing of the intro, the base line comes in very softly and laidback not over taking the voice.Orchestration is first rate during the interlude. When the shreya comes back in,tablas are also added :D.The sax in combination with the strings is a real nice touch. It's not often that the saxophone is used in thamizh music. Overall a great song, only thing that i disliked is it had a that IR feel to it.
The song is pathos with simple soulful tune and composition. It sounds like pathos songs of mid 80’s scored by Illayaraja. The usage of violin orchestration in interludes is typical Illayaraja style of scoring. But the usage of solo piano while starting a pathos song is not something done much before and it has a good impact. But the usage of some strings, tabla and the hindustani touch in the tune makes it sound like a Hindi song and further Shreya’s voice which has Hindi influence in pronouncing tamil words. She somehow manages to pronounce Tamil words well. Her powerful sweet voice adds more feel to the song and pours pathos in our soul. The powerful lyric by Na.Muthukumar about pain of separation is the soul of the song.
Ninaithu ninaithu - Brilliant piece from yuvan. Starts with mild piano. In the recent times he has been repeatedly proving his piano talent(e.g, May maatham, "Oru azhagana" of perazhagan).
Also enriched with catchy violins, tabla.

Nope.(way too slow.)
on pronunciation, it's the same old story - 'la,' 'La,' 'zha' thagaraaru.
(Same with Kay Kay)
>>"Oru azhagana" of perazhagan
I was channel surfing on FM and heard a piano piece that sounded very similar(beware of the word) to this. Just sharing what I noticed. Nothing more; no conclusions :-)

SP,
Just wanted to share some of my thoughts based on your passage:
“I was channel surfing on FM and heard a piano piece that sounded very similar(beware of the word) to this. Just sharing what I noticed. Nothing more; no conclusions :-)”
I assume that you are talking of a piano ‘piece’ and not a whole melody on which the present song is based on. If that is so, I don’t find anything wrong in the composer “lifting” such a piece. Every Gifted musician must have done it. In some cases they could even improvise the original (believe me, some of the fully copied songs of Veda sound to me so). I believe it is a question of taste most of the time in such instances, than any attempt to “copy”. Great poets have done the same.
Such passages tend to carry a negative connotation. The other day someone was making a remark that Subbiah Naidu was a copy cat too (just because he heard his Tamil version of “Que Sera…”). I think there is a general tendency in many of us to look down on a music director just because he lifted a ‘piece’ or even lifted a whole song (which could be for various reasons) from "western music" (colonial hangover?). I don’t know much of Yuvan Shankar Raja, nor have I even heard of this SOTD yet, but your posting struck me for what it implied.

Balaji & Saravanan, do you have the melodiios Naggor Hanifa number 'thendral kaatre konjam nillu engal thiru Nabhi-idam poychchollu' tuned by IR during the earlier part of his long carrer? The etheral qlaities of the song just make you dissolve yourselves into the vaanap peru veli without any effort.

THE RETURN OF MELODY
--------------------
The song is very melodious and it's a treat really. Thanks bb.
I was really surprised to see such a mature, well-structured song coming from Yuvan. The melody has quite a few surprising turns, very typical of MSV and IR's early works and flows like a stream.
Shreya has rendered the nuances well, as is expected of her.. but she has also made a few pronunciation errors, something YSR (with considerable help from the lyricist ;)) could have avoided.
Nevertheless, such attempts from young music directors should be welcomed by one and all, which will give them the confidence to explore this area further and push them to contribute to the return of MELODY in TFM!

A nice respite of melody after a long time.
How deprived TFM is of good melodies now a days?
Everywhere one gets to hear either kumaanguthus like appidi podu or gilli gilli or shouts of fanaaaaaaah
