Mani's latest move!: Courtesy: Sify.com, May 22, 2003
India’s highly hyped director Mani Rathnam has finally decided to launch his next film a bilingual in Hindi and Tamil. This film will be made under his home production Madras Talkies and is said to be a quickie.
It will be a multi starrer in Hindi with Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi, Abhishek Bachchan, Kareena Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. The Tamil version will star R Madhavan, Surya, Shaam, Meera Jasmine and Trisha Krishnan. The main technicians will be Art director Sabu Cyril, Cinematographer Ravi K Chandran, and music director A R Rahman. Writer Sujatha will be in charge of the Tamil screenplay and the story is by Mani himself. The Hindi dialogs by Anuraag Kashyap.
It will be a youth film, which will be made in Mani style and aimed at the Cineplex crowds in Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai. Remember that Shaad Ali’s Saathiya which was a remake of the Tamil Alaipayuthey worked wonders at the box-office mainly in metros. Similarly, this heady youthful brat pack film is targeted at the teenyboppers in India and overseas.
One of India’s leading film financier is said to be backing the project and the shooting will start by June end and is scheduled for release by January 2004, provided A R Rahman delivers music on time!
Remember:
Mani Rathnam had initially planned Alaipayuthey without songs and landed up in Rahman's studio and said he wanted songs, 3 months before the shooting commenced (Keeping the commercial format in mind). A R Rahman composed 10 songs for him in 3 months time for Alaipayuthey, which turned out to be great hits of his lifetime. So, I guess ARR will never disappoint Mani Rathnam and Shankar fans. By the way, Boys will be out in June 1st or 2nd week. Mani was greatly impressed when he heard the soundtrack of Boys. He has asked Rahman to compose tunes along the same flavor for this film too. Mani alternatively makes a commercial and art film. This time, it is going to be a complete commercial film.

now flop-king ARR.

Rahman can quit Tamil and concentrate in Hindi and Hollywood. SOME Tamil people dont have the gratitude towards Rahman. He changed the entire format of the music. He should only work in Tamil with Mani Ratnam, Shankar, Rajeev Menon. That is better. Bollywood and Hollywood is for him. Not Kollywood. YSR sucks like his father. Vidhyasagar is good but not of Mani's calibre. YSR in that song, Punnagai Poove walks like a duck or a person just operated of prostrate glands.

i sure do agree with jay. ysr sucks big time and yes.. just like his dad..the frog voiced one. arr has given a whole new frontier to indian music for cinema purposes. and exactly how many times does he have to prove that? taalam, alaipayuthey, lagaan, roja...etc. need i say more? of course there are a number of flops.. ang that is because arr experiments his music.. and not be monotonous lie ysr or kartik or their pathetic father!!

ARR quite correctly understands that when western classical composition methods are applied to film songs it is quite easy to generate a plethora of "counterpoints, inverse counterpoints, 2nds, 3rds, 4ths and 5ths". The challenge in making great film music is not to be clever and display virtuosity. It is to be able to capture emotion and deliver it in 3-5 minutes flat. As I have said earlier on this forum IR is great - no doubt ever. But it is not for his use of the well known tools of WCM that he becomes great. Only yesterday Sotheby's auctioned the original manuscript (>400 pages) of Beethoven's 9th Symphony. We heard conductors on the radio talk of what moved them about it and why it is the EU's anthem and how the storage capacity of a CD-ROM was fixed at 74 minutes of music so that the 9th could be accomodated on a single CD. No one talked about Beethoven use of counterpoints, silences and how he merged three voices into one. The very act of writing music in WCM reduces an extremely sublime time art like music into a commonplace visual-space art like musical notation. In fact there are music programs that will generate harmonies, chords and other add ons - that's how Paul McCartney composed a classical piece some years back (asked about why he never bothered to learn to read music he replied that he found it didn't excite him). ARR shd be credited for taking the path less traveled and trying to invent a totally fresh sound. When I met him (when he was not vastly more famous than me :-)) 10 years back and asked him about WCM he replied, "I have studied it and write music once in a while; however I don't keep writing all the time"

There is only one reason why they wanna talk abt IR??......vaitheruchal.
It's a disease that got stuck to them ever since they converted their religion. They forgot who they were once. They have resorted to throwing stones now. But every time they throw a stone, they get hit back by a missile rocket. Yes, such is the life for them now. Hard hard life.

Yes, Zubeida, Andhi mantharai and all are LBFs.
Not only that, for Roja he was only give rs.25000 . For ever classics like Pudhiya mugam and not much known film like Vandicholai C and Pudhiya mannargal, I don't think he would have been offered much.
But if you get a chance do listen to the songs of the films that I have quoted.....just take a listen.

Religion is one issue we can do without on this forum. As a rule TF and Indian films in general are a convergence of all divine beliefs. People of all faiths have contributed to the rich expereience we call Indian film and more particularly film music.
ARR makes the best of any opportunity he gets. And as he knows he has many leagues and light years to cover just as any one else among his contemporaries. When S.Balachander harshly criticised KVM for Sankarabharanam; KVM ver politely replied, "Isai enbathu oru aLavillatha kadal, Neither I nor SB have crossed it"
