i think "copying" is there for a long time in tamil film history. Here we discuss the tamil songs copied from others.

One more from the Deva stable, but this one's in Telugu. As I had posted earlier Deva had used the song by Dr Alban - 'alabalaba' for his telugu song in Tholi Prema (Aanandha Mazhai in tamil) - 'ee manase'.
Listen to them!
http://hammer.prohosting.com/~arr/Alabalaba-DrAlban.rm
http://hammer.prohosting.com/~arr/EeManase-TholiPrema.rm
But this time, the inspiration is very minimal. I mean Deva seems to have got a spark for his tune and has done quite a commendable job on his song with loads of improvisations. A very good job indeed.
yaaravathu thayavu senju thenmerku paruvakaatru beats entha dr alban song'nu solla koodatha? matha composer's pathi post panni aluthu pochu...konjam rahman pathiyum pannina thaan oru balance irukkum!

Vijay,
>>So can we say that Deva/KR/ARR/YSR/SAR/Anu Malik all copied because of the insistence of the directors ? <<
YES...only if a third person who has known the facts says so (when talking something *good* about someone else to the press, i think nobody wud lie )and NOT the MDs themselves.

Sabesan,
About Chaiya Chaiya,
I remember ARR having said somewhere that Mani asked for a high intensity love smitten song in a traditional way but with a novel approach. Then both ARR and Mani agreed to adopt the sufi folk style into the song.
ARR said he did some research on the structure of the sufi folk songs and adapted it to Chaiya Chaiya song.
If Iam correct the question put to him was "Why does Chaiya Chaiya sound like a Sufi folk song?"
Sorry for getting back to you late.Sometimes unusally I work.
Fliflo,
"If we copy in the exam we get punished. Is there somebody who can punish these copy cats??"
I used to copy in the exams both in India and US but I didn't get caught anytime. So,I'm usually more tolerant towards copying issues be it IR or
ARR or anyone for that matter. But sometimes my tolerance gets directed by my bias.

Trend you are an unsual one. Fortune seems to play a crucial role. You are not the one, who is unaware of the imperative rules and regulations of a school. This (copying) often leads to a "a no difference situation" between the hard-working and fake ones. Some might name this as "smart". But this cheapens the entire value of the system. I am sure you agree on that...Anyhow, I am lagging far behind in catching up this "smartness". You.u..Smarty!

Fliflo,
Actually I wasn't smart in copying too.I just barely passed in India and in US barely above the C(sea) level.
Actually,I'm not destined for greater things like you I guess.

A R Rahman's inspiration for his Karuthamma song 'thenmerku paruvakaatru' - only the loop in the background, not the tune for sure!
http://hammer.prohosting.com/~arr/hardtochoose_dralban.rm
The song is 'Hard to Choose' by Dr Alban, from his album 'One Love'.
I could get only this smalli'sh sample clip. Does anybody know where I can download this song fully? Its not in Napster!
Also, Deva's song in the movie Maanbumigu maanavan 'thiruthani pola patta' was a direct lift from an english song. I forgot her and the song's name, a black lady! Could anybody help?

Karthik, Earlier in these forums ARR used to be known as Multiple Inheritance Rahman. If you know Object Oriented Programming, you will understand easily what this means :) I do know that ARR looks/shops around for the rhythm/groove. This is what takes him time to compose. This is the reason I dont listen to POP at all. I listen to classic Rock or WCM. POP as a genre itself does not owe a independent existence. It feeds on Rock, Country, R&B, Jazz etc.
Also, POP is focussed on the sound rather than the music itself. For eg. the same beat, if it sounds differently is welcome in POP, but it would not be the case in Rock.

Three ARR songs I suspect that r "lifted"..
1) I saw pieces of "jumbalaika" song in the soundtrack of the movie "Bedazzled" (brandon frasier, liz. shue) The back ground piece when brandon f. falls from the helicopter on a car at the end of his first wish as drug lord.
2) " pennalla penalla roja poo" from the movie uzhavan is an outright lift from a bach composition. My friend who is a bach fan played it to me and I could believe it.
3) " vannilavin theril eri" from duet has al the violin bits liften from an arabic song. I listened to this song on FM and also saw it once during an MTV adv.
I am a good ARR fan but just wanted to put this into the open

"flifo" and "trend" conversation was interesting...
I have a "lot" in common with "trend":-). I can only say that. u have to learn physics, chem and Math from 1st grade school to final yr college from a list of books that everyone studies.. any invention u make when u r old depends heavily on the education u learnt the first 21 years from books written by various authors.
It wud be ridiculous to say u "copied" or got "inspired" by those authors and so ur work is a duplicate. similarly, ARR's books, were Mozart, bach and other old, music sources and he is now using them to implement his new stuff.
I call it education and u call it "lifting" just another perspective at things thats all. :-)
"if all new original work were akin to finding a new element in the periodic table, then there wud be no new work at all"

Kiru,
you are right. Now we have a "Modular" approcach to anything we do and stopped believing on reinventing the wheel. You decide what "Feel" you need to the music you want to compose, research on time-tested "modules" already available, route some "threads" to run through indian "modules" and mix them intelligently. Well, I am simply exaggerating here, but this is how I see it from a vantage point. It is too much simplification, but the fact is IT EXISTS is todays music - please dont think this applies to just ARR.
In vaseegara, HJ mixed a "space-ship" like sound in the charanam - the same sound that was used in "Then merku paruvakkatru" by ARR. Both had a "rain" theme - (maybe it was HJ that used that sound there...) - Well my point is things can be used repeatedly in many songs- situtations.
They sound different in that context - and you may call it a new approach.

Hey, what about the dumb "Megham karukkuthu.." song from Kushi that everyone is crazy about? It sounds just like the "Varagha nadi.." song from Sangamam.
And, the song "Idayathai kanavillai..." from Unnai Kodu Ennai Theruvan sounds like "Taal se Taal..."
Any comments?

Yep Devicharan..that was a classic ctrl C and V Deva-like copy :-))Too bad he is getting less intelligent on copies these days..earlier he used to copy not-very-well-known songs and also songs from the 80s.Now he is copying current popular songs and the younger audience watching MTV are bound to find him out easier . Tsk Tsk Tsk ;))
