If the song is to be picturised on an actor in the movie, they choose one among SPB,Mano,Hariharan,Sreenivas,Tippu,Udit Narayan,SM,UK.
If the song is to be picturised on an actress in the movie they choose one among PS,VJ,SJ,Chitr,Swarnalatha,Sadhana Sargam.
If it is a duet then they choose one among SPB,Mano,Hariharan,Sreenivas,Tippu,Udit Narayan ,SM,UK to sing for the actor and one among PS,VJ,SJ,Chitr,Swarnalatha,Sadhana Sargam to sing for the actress.
If it is for a child artiste earlier they used to call MS Rajeswari now you have so many "childish" singers.
If it is an Asarreri song they sing it themselves.
If the song requires more tamil skills they call Sukvindra Singh,Udit Narayan,Rathod,Sargam,Paudwal,Tippu,LM,AB.
If it is a teleserial they decide on Nityashree.

If it is an IR or KR movie, they put Bhavadharini in every occasion possible :)

If the song requires more tamil skills they call ..............LM,AB.
Ah there we go again. Guys, may we please leave LM,AB out of all this. How mant songs has LM sung in Tamil anyway? AFAIK, its just 4 - and all for IR. And then there was Vanna Ratham, the remake of Udan Khatola way back in 1959 with 4-5 songs. So its just 10 songs in 50 years. Then what are cribbing about??? And how many has AB sung - maybe a bit more in Thamizh. AFAIK its around 20-25 songs only. Some people here are talking as if only LM,AB have been chosen as singers in Tamil and nobody is looking at the native singers.
Correct me if there are any errors in this!

Raghu@212:
MD's first asked SPB, if he said yes good. If he said no they put names of nasal singers in jar, picked one name. Then checked the muthalan kattai and ettan kattai then they singed and they all made very happy.
tikke??

Sorry AVR
I just included LM AB to add to the list of non-tamil singers. No hard feelings.

it depends on the pitch and the actor.

AVR is right, we should not bring Latha or Asha into this topic, as they have only sung round about 10 tamil songs each, AFAIK.
but Sadhanna sargam has a very good voice, but a pity about tamil accent, but is it essential?

but you did not explain how they chose the singer, how do they decide which voice will suit which song/actor..etc?

Raghu, an interesting question indeed. I had asked the same question in the "Why do MDs sing?" thread. I'd like to know what the DF-ers think. is there a similar thread in the archives? surely, someone must have asked this question before!

I think it is similar to how producers/directors choose the actors. some of the reasons that I can think of are:
1. loyalty - Ram gopal verma sticking to Urmila, IR choosing SJ, MSV choosing TMS, PS
2. availability - is spb/kjy is not available, call arunmozhi
3. their perceived "image" - spb didn't get many classical/carnatic based song till he established himself in Shankarabharanam. kjy was the no.1 choice.
4. suitability: I'm not able to think of examples here. MVD for dappaanguthu songs?
5. marketability : emergence of Nithyashree, Unnikrishnan, Vasundhara Das.
6. Insistence of Producers/Directors/Actors : maybe because of reasons 1-5 above.
anything else?

How about voice?
e.g. swarnalatha for 'hai Rama'
Udit Narayan/Unnikrishnan - 'Soniya'

1. Where the song is composed, I mean the octave in which the actual notes lie. I remember KR mentioning in an interview that he had composed a song in Ullasam using very high frequency notes, and had to give it Kamalahassan because he was the only guy around who could reach those frequencies.
2. Male-female combo : Clearly for a duet, these 2 must sing in the same shruthi, but the female singer sings at one octave higher frequency. Thus, these must match between the singers.

Sadhana Sargam has also sung
Churithar Aninthu - Poovellam Kettupar
Kutti Kutti - MTV
Paatu Solli - Azaghi

what about SPB hiting higer octaves in "Anjali Anjali" from duet "Kadhal rojave" from Roja, Chitra killed "anjali anjali" big time @ high octaves, any body agree with me, on this?

>>"3. their perceived "image" - spb didn't get many classical/carnatic based song till he established himself in Shankarabharanam. kjy was the no.1 choice. <<" very true, ever since Shankaraparanam, SPB was given many semi-classical like songs.

KR = Karthik Raja
u wd hv heard kamal singing "pottu vaitha kaadhal thittam" in "Singaravelan" which IMHO is one of the best high-pitched song in TFM... (especially the charanams) ..so nothing strange that KR chose kamal for that song... but sadly, "ullaasam, ullaasam" song didnt do justice to kamal's voice except the "ullaasam ullaasam ulagengum ullaasam" and the ending of charanam with "anbeyyyy"....

coming to the song "anjali anjali" (Duet) "killed" by chitra, generally MDs tend not to give high pitched songs to lady singers since they hv the tendency to shrill IMHO... a good instance is Sadhna sargam going down with "penney penney" (2nd charanam) in "Vennilavey vennilavey" (Minsara kanavu) whereas Hariharan goes full throttle with "penney penney" (1st charanam)...
but still there are very good songs with lady singers going high pitch like "Oru naal andha oru naal" (SJ - Devadhai - IR).. (just an example)
maybe ARR had faith in chitra and gave her "Anjali anjali" which IMHO is good...

SPB too strains in those notes in "anjali-2".
If u take examples of female singers of SJ,PS and LM(particularly)...i dont think male singers can reach the high notes easily hit by them.
One of LM's that comes immd. to mind is "Neela Aasmaan" from silsila though she has scores of others where the notes are impossible to repeat.
For PS: "Indru nee oru paadi naan oru" part of "unnai kaanada kaanum".
I am not drawing comparison here but of the male singers, prob kishore was most comfortable in high notes.. particularly when he came back in the Araadhana period.

SPB never starined in the higher notes, but I have to agree, no male singers can touch the highest notes like female singers without straining, but when it comes to lowest notes, vice versa, female singers can not touch the lowest notes easily like male singers, this is when bass comes into voice.

Raghu,
May be its true to some extent but i dont exactly agree with the low note + bass thing u have mentioned in the context of male-female. Bass..for any note gives a better feel for a male singer and is probably one of the things that distinguishes SP from say sonu/UK etc.
But female singers with good range (we are obviously talking of greats here) can as easily hit low notes.

Can you pls tell me few songs example, where Female singer hit the lowest notes, just curious?
