I have the HDDCS CD with me. I have heard all the songs and I should say that the songs are quite different from the usual Hindi songs. I liked some of the songs. He has given some good interludes aswell. Ismail, like ARR (he is/was called "ARR of north"), has given a lot of importance to the sound aspect (some reviewers has criticised that he has given more importance to sound and in the process missed the melody). Also, this album has a lot of folk music influence.
In general, he is certainly not that talented like ARR, but music for this movie was certainly good. I heard he is better in giving BGM aswell (though I have not listened to them; he has won some award for best BGM for HDDCS)
I dont remember what other movie he has done, but excepting HDDCS, nothing became famous. I think he has done 2-3 movies so far.

Every year ARR won the award, his work was way ahead of the rest of the music directors.IMHO ARR won the award based purely on merit.
What can be the good sign in an MD other than ARR winning the best music director? Was HDCCS better than sangamam or taal or earth? The songs of HDCCS was much better than the trash produced by rest of hindi film industry. But was it award material?

Krishnan,
NO the bgm for HDCCS was by anjan biswas. In fact, any music award given to hindi music, IMO, is not complete, bcos, 99%, the BGM being done by some other person, in contrast to lot of south indian movies. There are lot of rules are being broken, when it comes to awarding awards to hindi. Infact contrary the rules, generally remake movies should not be considered for awards, but virasat was considered and even bagged few awards.
P.S
Songs of HDCSS are good, diffrent from other hindi songs in general. Some of the interludes are also composed intelligently, but still, the some of the tunes still does not pass beyond average hindi song tunes.

I agree with my nanban anban. Deva was expecting atleast the best lyricist award if not the best MD award for his song "Yappa Yappa Iyappa". The sad part is, he nearly got the award for the legendary "Andaalu" Song three years ago, but for the effects of North-South Politics. He alleges that the songs of HDDCS are copied from one of his earlier movies, "Mangalyam Thandhunanena".
BTW, guys, can anyone let me know where I can download the Mp3's of the songs from MT?

Today's Dinamalar says that VM was given the award for "Mudhal murai killi paarthen" song in sangamam.
This song is a good one, and has usual "stamp" of VM - with words like vervai, garbam etc.. :)

folks,
it is sad to see IR not getting any award for the HR movie.
can we say that all these awards are politically corrupted?
or IR could have done better in understanding the people?
hmm.....

I was expecting Raja will get the award this year Either for Sethu or for HR. A big shock early morning. :-( I wonder whether these people consider BGM as a part of music or not. :-(

Conceding that many of the feature film awards were decided by vote and not by consensus, Mr.
Sorry, No Shankar!
Ghose said he was personally of the opinion that Kamal Haasan's ``Hey Ram'' should have bagged at least one major award. As it stands, the film got three awards: Best Supporting Actor for Atul Kulkarni, Best Costume Designer for Sarika Kamal Haasan, and Best Special Effects for M/s Mantra.
In any case, this movie has been selected for some int'l festival as reported in today's Hindu:-)

Chandy,
You're right about VM. 'Vervai' Sindhi Ezhutharar Illaya?
As for the awards, I think since the majority of the juries are from Hindi films, they will ensure that some crappy commercial Hindi films (that often get equated with 'Indian films') get awards. What else can you expect from the people that have gone ahead and instituted an Award (that they call India's answer to the Oscars) called International Indian film awards. Guess what? The movies in consideration are Hindi films, not Indian films. They never call it Hindi awards though!!!
In this year's national awards, IMO the Best Art Direction award should have gone to Hey Ram and not Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 80 percent of which was shot in a Rajasthan palace/fort and the rest in Vienna (and the director was trying to pass it off as Italy.. imagine showing Madras Central station and calling it OOty? Believe me, one Hindi film has done that)
Every year, the stupid category (that IMO was created to please the Hindi wallas called 'Popular and Wholesome Entertainer' goes to candy floss Hindi romances of the Yash Chopras and Suraj Bharjatyas. Can you imagine a lousy film like Darr with mindless violence (a rip-off of Cape Fear) bagging an award in this wholsesome popular entertainemnt category?
But this year's Sarfarosh was a decent entertainer and possibly deserves the award. Well, Hum Saath Saath Hain, yet another wedding video from the house of Barjatyas just about missed the boat!!!
Cinematography should have gone to Hey Ram as well. Thirunavukkarasu had done an excellent job!
I don't know which category Gautam Ghose was referring to when he lamented the fact that Hey Ram deserved some major awards.

I never consider the National Awards are given to the right persons. They are mixed up with Politics and Regionalism. But eventhough, I was expecting two things - Sabu Siril (Art Direction) and Maestro IR(for his excellent Contribution in Hey Ram and Sethu). Kaase thaan Kadavulada... Nallathukku (Indhiyavil) Kalam Illai...
COngrats to Vairamuthu and Mohanlal ( they deserved it).

Music and emotions have no languages, agreed, but poetry definitely is related to the language, to a great extent IMHO...That being the case, how can they declare the lyric of a particular song of X language greater than another written in A,B,C,D languages? Objectivity may be impossible, I think...

One quizzing aspect on this year's awards is the fact that, for the first time the awards have been announced almost 2 months after the scheduled date. This leads me to think that the govt could have tampered with the awards. Am sure the current govt with their overtly religious bent would'nt want to endorse Hey!ram. Maybe the awards are'nt a clear reflection of the jury. The jury could have gone the Hey!ram way and the govt could have developed cold feet and somehow tampered with the process.
Oscar voting is managed by a private accounting firm and the votes are kept as confidential as possible. Last year being an exception. The national awards do have voting process but the govt can override the decision.
One should note that once the voting process is done, the decision is communicated to Information and Boradcasting minstry before its released to the press.
My personal view is that Hey!ram should have been awarded for cinematography and art. I watched "Hum dil de .." and it was an average fare. Absolutely no comparisions with hey!ram. Just as a consolation to kamal, his wife has been awarded.
Just my guess.
