What about Malaysia Vasudevan? His songs like "Kodai Kala Katrae, Kulir Thendral Paadum Paatae..." and "Malarghalae Nadaswarangal, Mangala thaeril ..." Such nice songs....

  At one time during 78-79 gave more Tamil hits than even SPB thanks to IR.
  For Eg.. oru thanga radhaththil
  2. Aagaya gangai - both from Dharma yuddham
  3. Aayiram malargale - niram maradha pookal
  4. indha minminikku - sivappu rojakkaL
  5. Aaha vandhiruchchu - Kalyanaraman
  6. kovil mani osai - pudhiya vaarpugaL

  But IMHO his voice lacks the sophistication of

  You have started a lovely topic, that is one of my favorite singers. Malaysia Vasudevan. For me the early days of Illaiyaraja means the presence of MV in our psyche. Those were the days when I used to listen to Radio Ceylon when most of Illaiyaraja's songs were duets sung by MV. I can list out a number of fantastic compositions where you will see the most spontaneous of Illaiyaraja's instrumental bits: First, let me take off from where Raja M left off:
  
  (I always thought the following songs gave the same romantic feeling, yet they were each unique songs while sounding quite like a family:)
  
  1. Nee Illadha Podhu Yengum Nenjum () MV & Sujatha
  2. Pani Vizhum Poon Nilavil Parvai Pol Kann Malarndhu (Illamai Kkolam) MV & SPS
  3. Kaalangal Mazhaikalangal (Edhayathil Oru Idam)- MV & SJ

  5. Neengatha Yennam Ondru (Vidiyum Varai Kkathiru) MV & SJ
  6. Malargalile Aaradhanai (Karumbu Villu) - MV & SJ a super song avaialable at Ramaswamy Gireesan's site)
  
  I think I am missing one.
  About 5 of them make feel like I am on a rainy day with a Miss Lovely and staring down at the Kkolam on patio being washed away. Then you have some Mayilu and some Kuyillu providing the backdrops, you go further past the gate and hope for the rainbow to appear. Again, you know that type of feeling you get particularly when you listen to the above duets of MV
  
  Aahaya Gangai could have been one of this family, however, the rhythm and instrumental pieces are totally different.
  
  MV's solos, one of my favorites is Endredum Aanandame (kadal meengal) and Kadal Deepam Ondru, so also Kodai Kaala Kattre.

  Kovil mani Osai- is from KizhakkE pOgum rayil.
  
  In the same movie, there is another excellent
  song by MV, "Malargale nAdha swarangal". In fact
  this song is much better than the "kovil.."
