Hi all,
I have learnt lots of Tamil words through tfm, but there are so many words that I still dont know the meaning of. I would love to improve my Tamil vocabulary, but resources are limited. I was wondering if we can have a thread that helps out in this regard. People post the words they dont understand and someone who knows responds with the answer. For this to succeed the old-timers have to get involved, bcos I dont know many younger guys who know much Tamil words :)
Ex.
1. samsaaram enbathu veenai..santhosham enbathu raagam.. xxx xxx illai
I used xxx because I dont even know what he was saying. was it "salanam galadhi illai"? What does that mean?
2. En mana vaanil siragai virikkum.. from Kasi. There is a line kalakalakala vena thulli kuthikkum sinnanchiru kalaiyey.. what does kalai mean?
3. Anjanam. What does it mean? (Used in various songs)
4. Uchi vaguntheduthu pichu poo vacha kili..What does this mean?
Please answer people!

kupps: good explanations. a small correction tho'. paTTinam means a coastal town. pUmpaTTinam actually, afaik, means pU+paTTinam = pUnjchOlaikaL miguntha paTTinam (as in pUmpukAr!). i am not sure if pUm means pukum. (actually pUum - the aLapedai, means pukum, i think :-) )

Looks like there is some mix up. Kalaapam is peacock feather(tail). Kalabam is scented (perfumed) paste. The word kalaapam is used in Thiruppugazh to describe Murugan riding a peacock and in Kavadichindhu-(pullikkalaapa mayil pagan meaning one who rides a peacock with dotted feathers). Kalbam is used to describe people in romantic mood who wear sandal paste or kunkuma paste and also to describe gods/goddesses. chandana kalabam, kalaba chandanam, kunkuma kalabam are phrases found in old Tamil works. in the song by Jayashri, she uses kalaapa kaadhala.May be she sees Karthik(Muruga) in him as Murugan wears peacock feather. I am not sure what the song writer had in mind.
Sen in senthamil means pure or classical Tamil without any corruption by other languages and slang. Pyn in pynkani means young.

other_side Thanks. amsa is a variation of hamsa (hansa)(Sanskrit) for swan or annam(Tamil).
Thuligai is cradle or thottil(Tamil). I am not familiar with the song. May be, he wants the hamsa like girl to be his cradle!!!? In olden days cradles were ornamental in different forms. I am not sure where this comes from. Probably an old lullaby.

Kum: Kundakai-mandakai; Looks like words for rhyme. Kundakai is probably the colloquial form of kurundaikai.

Question what is
"kaal allayam"
the film kallykkul iram has this song
"siru poon mani assayum
athil therikum
puthu isai
siru kanmani poon imaigallil kaal allayam"
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Fri May 2 11:03:49 EDT 2003
other_side: It is "thaala layam". If there is music(isai) there must be thaalam! The enunciation is not very clear.

what happened not much activity goin on here..
Here are some question...
This is also learning tamil. We have been using so many english/hindi words in songs.but we dont know the meaning at all.so here are some of the words.. any body here for the tamil meaning of those words...
shirt is sattai
1)what is phant.... in tamil
2)what is the tamil equalent of chudithar
3)what is cell phone...
4)what is a bike(dont say erandu sakkara vaganam)?
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Wed May 7 17:05:26 EDT 2003
other_side: Actually sokkaai or Chokkaai was the word used for shirt. Sattai is the variation of shirt. Sallaadam is the word for pant. I remember my grandfather using these words. Chudithar/churidhar is a loose fitting pant and can be called sallaadam. If you want to be exact, bike should be called Iru chakkar midhi vandi. Translating cell phone will be equivally complex. We have to understand that a language is enriched by borrowed words. There is nothing wrong in using cell phone as such. A close equivalent will be 'kurippitta idathukku utpatta kaiyadakka tholaipesi'. This describes the technolgy in the earliest form. Since they allow roaming now we can jsut call it 'kaiadakka tholaipesi' May be those who are constantly exposed to current Tamil can add. But, what is alarming is children using 'mummy/mommy and daddy' istead of amma and appa!!!
- From: Raj (@ 206.97.63.112)
on: Wed May 7 18:40:06 EDT 2003
other_side : typo...equally not equivally and instead not istead. I was recalling my childhood and the language used. We used saraai/kaalsaraai/nijaar for trousers. I am not sure whether these are borrowed words. Cell phone can be translated as 'vaanoli tholaipesi',since it is actually a two way radio for personal use.

geeth
iam also intrested to know the meaning of anjugam.anjugam comes in lot of other songs also like
"anjugam thoonga...." from "pachamali poovu" in kizhakku vasal.
Raj & vaathiyar
thanxs for the inputs.I thought there existed some definite words for cell phone & bike and its me who didn't know the meaning. But i guess there is no definite word as such :(.
salladam & siluvaar... this is the first time iam hearing those words.. are these words used in the villages.. or this is used widely.what i mean is some words are kind of native.they even call phants as "kozhai" in some places.
i kind of feel that we should not use the word midhi vandi at all for bike.we dont exert any foot force on the bike.Methi vandi should be only for bicycles.
similarly erandu chakkara vaganam is for a
two-wheeler.It is a broad term used to denote any thing with 2 wheels.
--------------------
This brings me another question. who is responsible for new tamil words. Is there any organization, or some govt office for these. or it is just developed with the usage.
