Hai Guys.
I was listening to the Song "Pon Veliyile
from Yathramozhi. It took me to an entirely different world. Just Haunting. Especially the Charanam of the song. And also the violin background that accompanies the voice in charanam. The interludes. The beginning.Out of the world. I was kind of interested in knowing about the songs that have haunted you and still continuing to do so. Sadly, we don't come across many such songs these days.
Here goes my list:
1. Kizhakkale Keralisatham from NAttuppura Pattu (the tune).
2. Idhayam Poguthe.. (ask Madhan).
3. En Iniya Pon Nilave...( Do I need to tell?)
4. Kannan Vandhu Padugindran Kalamellam...
5. Oh Pappa Laali..
6. Kodiyile Malligappoo...
7. Vegam Vegam... from Anjali
8. Kaadhalin Dheepamondru
9. En Jeevan Padudhu Unnaithan Thedudhu..
10. Thalattu Mariponadho..
11. Vaan Pole Vannam Kondu ..
12. Poongatru Un per solla..
13. Kalyana Malai..
14. Nalam Vazha Ennalum..
and the list goes on...
Fellow Df-ers, can you tell me about the songs that have really affected you only because of the Music and not because of the lyrical content or any ohter factor ? . PLease do share some experiences. Some Nostalgia.

I thought there were already topics like "Mystical songs in TFM" and "Songs that touched us", etc. I don't get how this is different from either of these...

I've forgottento add "Then Poove Poove Vaa" from Anbulla Rajnikanth. Shankar, thanks for reminding me. "Kodai Kaala is just a master piece. I remember when I used to be in School, they played this song in"Oliyum Oliyum". That friday, the timing of the program was advanvced due to some tennis match. It was during the monsoon season. The weather was really dull, and there goes the song..
It just suited the climate, the ambince!
The feeling that I experienced was packed with joy..

It may not be Tamil song. But is composed by our Maestro. "Anando Brahma.." from Shiva. The violin interludes (especially the one before the first charanam) keep ringing in my mind.

- oraayiram paarvaiyile... the melancholy expressed in TMS's voice is simply haunting!
- kaadhal oviyam.. paadum kaaviyam.. it's the interludes that haunt me. i clearly remember the first time i noticed them.. while on a tour with our class in college, just after a heavy lunch, we were on a long drive. with literally all blood taken for digestion, and none to spare for the brain - kind of 'kirangiya nilai'- this song playing in the bus' audio system was the only thing that could disturb the peace my mind was enjoying! boy.. the captivating interludes just got etched in it! i dont think i can ever forget this song.
- maasaru ponne varuga.. the chorus simply makes me feel a stream of excitement flowing from top to bottom. the feeling is real! marvelous song!!
there are more..

kadavuL uLLamE ,karuNai illamE .
nAn ennum pozhudhu (salilda) - I lsitened to this song after some 8-10 years(!!) ,but as the song progressed , i was amazed to know that I still remembered the lyrics. Well, when somebody told about this song in azhiyAdha kOlangaL , i thought it must be a good song & i wud record it someday, but when Mr.sankaran hinted me about the tune, I almost recollected the whole song along with the pleasant memories of the past.

Could someone post the difference between haunting song and Songs that touched us so that it will enable me to post more songs in this thread.

RS,
IMO, songs that touched us are those which had an emotional impact on us .In that category , I'll put
1.kanavu kANum vAzhkai yAvum
2.azhagiya kaNNE
3.vaNNam konda veNn-lavE
to name a few ...
these songs make me heavy whenever I listen to them. These songs change ur mood. Similarly songs like "adhO andha paravai pOla vAzha vEndum" make u so happy whatever mood u r in.
Whereas a haunting number ,acc to me is the one which comes to ur mind very often & unexpectedly .ie., u 'll be preoccupied in some work and this song (in my case mostly an interlude) runs at the back of ur mind u won't know what made u remember the song ,but u'll be humming it .like,
the second interlude (violins)of needhAnE endhan pon vasandham
first interlude of oru iniya manadhu isayai aNaithu sellu
Beautiful WC interludes of paruvamE pudhiya pAdal pAdu
or songs like
kOdaikAla kAtrE or poondhaLir Ada comes to ur mind suddenly. u won't get emotionally affected but it'll have an effect in ur mind which makes u feel good.
one more is "nenjE gurunAdharin sEvai ninaindhu" from mOgamuLL. There's nothing great about the song (except that it's a rarely used rAga -nAtakapriyA) ,but whenever i listen to it i feel so happy ,in other words it elevates me to a different plane where u feel the only work u have is to listen to this song and let the deadlines and projects go to hell(!!!!).
It might sound absurd to some ,but honestly this is what made me list some songs here and some songs in "songs that touched us" thread.

Okay shankar got your point.
Then my listing of idhayam oru kovil should go to
Songs that touched us thread and not here.
So my haunting numbers are
* Andhi mazhai pozhigirathu for the interludes
* Vaan pole vannam kondu
More to follow

Thanks Shankar,
If you don't know Telugu or Malayalam, how can you feel that song is touching. BY haunting songs,I mean the songs that keep going in the back of your mind no matter where are you or what are you doing. It mesmerises you just by the music. Not by lyrical content or any other factor.
I want some FEELINGS in the posting.
Not just a mere list of songs....
If you've noticed in the mid and late eighties, Raja used the Sax. and instruments of that type in a very effective way. The song "Per Vachalum.." from Michael MAdana Kamarajan" has got some very nice sax. pieces in the interludes. If you have the
cassette with you, please listen to it, especially the second interlude. Listen to the way the sax. goes. Sadly other songs in the album becamemore famous.
ILAYARAJA IS A DEMIGOD, IF NOT GOD.

Shankar,
Songs that "emotionally affect" you are those that affect you in a fairly big way in the fg mode, and the songs that "haunt" you are those that do so in a subtle way in the bg mode, nu vechukkalaama ? :-)
