MS and sindhuja,
sorry! I was out of tuch with this thread for a month i didnt know much of the protocols here. But point taken and the the pacifist attitude appreciated.
anyway MS u had mentioned..
paaththa vizi = paavani
isaiyil = hamsanaadham
I was told isayil thodanguthamma as hamsanandhi and not hamsanadham and also I cannot place "ppavani" raagam. Can u site songs in this raaga.
I'm asking again bcoz both songs sound like they r in the same hamsanandhi raaga.

bharath:
The reason the two songs sound alike - and trust me, they are totally disparate in Ragam, but have the same rhythmic structures, i.e. the Keralan instrument the Chanda used for the beats.
Isayil is in HAMSANADHAM - listen to Bantureethi Kolu and compare. Paartha Vizli is in PAAVANI - this is a really rare Raga and has not to my knowledge used in any other film songs. It is a Melakartha number 41.
PAAVANI
ArOhaNa : S R1 G1 M2 P D2 N3 S
avarOhaNa : S N3 D2 P M2 G1 R1 S
There is a Dikshitar Krithi in Paavani:
SachchidAnandamaya
By the way, check this article about Classical Ilayaraja about the song and the Raga, as you seem to have a real disbelief of what many of us have said and verified.

Hamsanadham is:

Hamsandhi is:
HamsAnandhi - From mela 53 - Gamnasrama

Angeli,
Wonderful!! Thanx a lot. That was a really good explanation. Heartfelt thanx to you!
I always recognised hamsanandhi from "geetanjali's" "Om Namaha " song. some how this did not quite sync anyway I agree with your explanation....
i saw ram's posting and it reminded me of a strange thing. I was going through Dr. Lakshmi Narayans review of IR's music and...
he has listed Sindhu Bhairavi's " thom thom tha nandha thom... mogam endrum theeyil...." under a different raaga. I remember jesudas saying in a DD interview that this was "revathi" raagam. Can anyone verify.

Bharath:

I think you were mistaken. I hold it is in hamsanaadham. To get you a feel for hamsanaadham and hamsaanandhilet me give you some examples:
Hamsanaadham:
(1) Thendral vandhu ennai thodum
(2) sorgame endraalum adhu nammora pOla
(3) Om namaha
(4) Minnaaram maanaththu from Guru (Malayalam)
(5) Isaiyil thodangudhamma
(6) paNdureethi gOlu - Carnatic krithi
Hamsaanandhi:
(1) vEdham aNuaNuvilum naadham - salangai oli
(2) raaga dheepam yEtrum nERam
(3) nooraaNdu vaazum paadalidhu - oorellaam un paattu
(4) raaththiryil pooththirukkum (sans the line - vaazai ilai neer theLiththu pOdadi en kaNNe)
U should get a feel for the rags.

Hi bharath
The song "Thom thom" from Sindhu bhairavi is not in Revathi.
It is in Kanakangi which is the first Melagartha ragam.

Hi angeli,
Thanks for the information !! I somehow matched the song "Thom Thom.." from Star with "Malargale malargale" from Love birds. Thats how the Saranga aspect came to my mind!!

barath: I think you are getting confused b/w Hamsanadham and Hamsaanandhi. 'Om Namaha' and 'Soragme' are both mainly in Hamsanadham, with some accidentals - also, Hamsanadham takes a few other notes depending on it's version. MS has given you a really good list to compare the Ragas.
Thom Thom is indeed Kanagangi, as Gopinath stated. Revathi is a pentatonic scale(5notes up and down), whereas, Kanagangi is a Melakartha.
My advice is to read Lakshminarayanan's Classical Ilayaraja articles, as they will greatly enhance your knowledge of Ragas. He goes into IR's wonderful use of Rare Ragas.

Sowmya: In fact, Malargale is in Saraswathi and Hami Kalyani, mixed. It's not quite Saranga or Hamsanadham.
Also, Murali S, Thendral vandhu Ennai Thodum is also more Suddha Sarang than Hamsanadham. On a Sapthaswaram show, Classical singer Sowmya confirmed this and sang the swara pattern. It seems to follow the Suddha Sarang pattern.

A follow up question on rEvathi rAgam
It is said to be a janya of hanumathOdi or thOdi as it is called popularly.
the a/a for thOdi and rEvathi are as follows
thOdi (mela 8)
S R1 G2 M1 P D1 N2 S
S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R1 S
rEvathi
S R1 M1 P N2 S
S N2 P M1 R1 S
My doubt was why can't rEvathi be called a janya of natakapriya whose a/a goes like
nAtakapriyA (mela 10)
S R1 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S
S N2 D2 P M1 G2 R1 S

bharath:- Hamsadhwani is another raaga sounding similar in name to Hamsanadham and Hamsanandhi.
It has got 5 swaras. S R2 G2 P N2 on both up and down.
The songs are Kaalam maralam num kaadhal maarumoe
(Film- Vaalkkai)
Hope our friends will post other songs in that raga.

Angeli: I do not think Thendral Vandhu Ennai thodum is in Shudhdha Saarang - Shuddha Saarang has a predominant usage of Shudhdha Madhyamam along with Pradhdhi Madhyamam - it sounds more like Hameer Kalyani...
Thendral Vandhu ennai thodu and isayil thodangudhamma are set in hamsanaadham
Here is an aalap in Sudhdha Saarang rendered byVeena Shahasrabuddhe...

I have one question about these janya ragas. Mohanam is janya of Sankarabaranam from books. But can it be considered a janya of KalyaaNi too ? or rephrasing the question in two ways:
(1) what do we mean when we say a ragam is a janyam of another ? what are the criteria
(2) Can there be a multiple inheretance ? :-) The swaras of mohanam are there in kalyaaNi too. SO where is the difference ?
From: IR (@ 1cust34.tnt30.bos2.da.uu.net) on: Sat Jul 29 17:32:08 EDT 2000
MS, let me try and explain this.. :)
The general rule for identifying the janaka raga of a janya raga is:
In the 72 melakartha scheme, the first possible melakartha ragam with the same notes is considered to be the parent raga.
BTW, Mohanam is a janya of 28th Melakartha Harikhambodhi.
This should explain why Mohanam is not considered to be a janya of either Shankarabharanam (29th mela) or Kalyani (65th Mela).
This is exactly the reason why Revathi is considered to be a Janya of Thodi (8) and not Nataka Priya (10) :-)
