Guys! This piece is from an earlier album. The pieces were composed and orchestrated by Venky Shanmugam, St. Louis. The lyrics were written by Siva of Trichy. I did the male lead vocals for the entire album. Please listen to this and let me know
1) if you can even listen to the piece in the first place ( I am new to loading music files:-))
2) your unadulterated no-holds-barred feedback:)

rAjAjI: what to say? i like your voice when you are in the kIz shthAyi - sounds really sexy. no-holds-barred feedback: (1) too much spb influence. the songs (this and the one with srikanth) sound like they are sung by spb himself - and this is not a compliment :-); (2) some of the sangathis sound too contrived for this very light song - like in mayilgaL nadamAdudhu.
my overall opinion is: this is a very good performance. i am replaying the line "ivai yAvai kANbadhaRku nenjil .... ellai Edhum illaiyE". superb.

Naveen: you're good as always :)
RajaG:
Great track! Very well thought off and very listenable.
I like the harmony done in vocals. I couldnt understand the lyrics...coz
I dont know Tamil! :) but I can say it's something very good from all that I could
decipher.
Scope for improvement?? :
The BGM needs more arrangement...just the strings didnt
sound good. The base needs more volume...there are some
very good variations happening there.I thought it needs more focus.
Nice work...kudos too all you guys.
Jay.

Sriki: You had mentioned that you would/could do a more filled-up version of kuLir thendral (especially the BGM and counterpoints). Could you take a stab at at?
All: Thanks for your comments!

UV: i don't think venky composes anymore. he released an album called himalayan dreams a few years ago (he told me that all the profits go to ASHA). i think this kuLir song is in that album (or the previous one he did). i don't think venky did anything after himalayan dreams. (he is busy with his weekend performances; his main market is the hindi group; so i am not sure if he is doing any more tamil album). if i find time next week, i will find some latest info and get back. in the meanwhile, rAjAjI, who is more resourceful, can tell us more.

RajaG, generally I dont post my comments frequently here..but this song particular song was too melodious to prevent me from commenting :-)
Great singing..The brighas you have added to "kaatrile" and "yaavume" were apt and sounded great..and like someone before me mentioned the vocal harmony was good too..and you have done full justice to this composition, coming to which, I should congratulate Venky on this song..he has sustained the mood and the feel the song generates in the pallavi, throughout the song..
Regarding arul's comment on contrived sangathis, I didnt quite feel that way..the only thing that I would comment on are that after a pallavi that was lavishly decorated with brighas the charanam just followed flatly in contrast..maybe it was intended that way or the metre didnt give enough scope for improvisation..however, it didnt sound odd but just an observation from my part..
This song brings the same feeling that "Uravenum pudhiya vaanil" brings out in me every time..
if Srikanth can work on enhancing the interludes (he would do a much better job with that) without disturbing the original underlying melody, this should end up being a great piece..
and considering the dearth of tunes like this in TFM, you might be well advised to copyright this and restrict internet access :-)))

G:
kuLir thendral is easily the best of yours I have heard till date. Should I say that this was also the first of the songs I heard and became a fan of yours ? :-)
Vijays' comment on "uravenum" is apt. But the song which comes greatly close in feel (and in raga) is "unnai edhirpaarththEn" from "vanaja-girija". U may wish to hear that once to compare your rendition with Swaranlatha / SPB.
SPB influences irukkattum. One line shows me u derive form Hariharan too :-) "paniththuLigaL thazuvinaaaaaaaalum" - In this line the portion "naaaaalum" seems to be hariharanish for me.
This range seems to be the most attractive. U may wish to ask Srikanth to compose for you in this.
Venky ShaNmugam is one real good talent. If more can be heard from him, and that too through your voice,it will be great.
One freaky observation: Please compare your rendition of the following lines:
"azagu thirai nilavu ena maaRudhu"
and
"adhil layiththu mayilgaL nadamaadudhu"
I feel the former is smoother and the latter can be done better, just IMO.
yEkkam / silirththu - pOndra vaarththaigaLukku superb expressions koduththurukkenga. niraiya kaththukka vENdi irukku unga kitta irundhu :-)
- From: rajaG (@ kcecfp02.sprint.com)
on: Mon Aug 13 00:54:10 EDT 2001
MS: Obviously, you must have guessed that the difference in expression between 'maarudhu' and 'nadamaadudhu' is intentional because of 1) meaning and 2) the number of syllables and the opportunity for visualizing a peacock's dance. Ofcourse, naa visualize paNNina peacock konjam kudhichchu kudhichchu aadaradhu:-)
kaththukkaradhukku ellaam enkitta oNNUm illai. But then, nobody is useless - they can always be used as an example for avoidance:-)

G - thanks so much for uploading your HD songs.... all I have heard so far are bits and pieces of a few songs and that was longggggggggggg back...
excellent singing and you are "the" uncrowned bhaavam king ... I guess it is an inspiration from your maanaseega guru - SPB!!!!!!
I think you should have uploaded your songs in a thread titled "Professionals - Yet to strike!!!!" :) - Very very professional singing and I totally agree with MS - Kulir Thendral is "the best" I have heard so far too.... Again, you seem to be most comfortable in this range and your voice sounds very rich!
May be our friends like TRV and others who compose for K.Balachander and other big shots should consider giving such genuine talents as RG an opportunity to sing. This way we can encourage and pave way for these "amateurs" to become true professionals one day!

but are you sure about this, :)
do you really want me to take a stab at the score? ppl are ready to stab me here for (m)any reasons :) :) :) :)
I will call you to discuss!, as mentioned before, when I met you the first time, this is a very very good melody. Kudos to Venky and you, for bringing out the right emotion.

Very well rendered rajaG...amazing control of voice. And the music was impressive too. And the recording excellent!
What kind of equipement did you use? Instruments inclusive.
I'm trying to set up a small studio in my place and I'd like to get some information. Or is this kind of info already posted in this thread?
TIA

sridhar, way to go.
very nice drum programing. nice variations.
good usage of harps (arps were nice),pizziC, oboe, strings (best from 5:01)
good job.

sridhar: it was really worth the wait. as srikanth mentioned, i really enjoyed the drum programming (very well done); the pizzicato usage - it was really dramatic at 1:23 when the pizzicato gives just a hint of what was going to come later, the repeating whachamicallits at 1:58 and you build a beautiful chaconne-like arrangement over it - beautiful accenting by the timpani; an excellent transition at its end; good usage of harp and flutes - delicious. as srikanth mentioned the ending was beautiful. man this is composition. the mixing was as usual very well done. the only kuRai i find is some repetition from that murugan song. otherwise, this is a great piece of free-form music.
